Pros and Cons of Homeschooling
Parents are often faced with hard choices as they bring up their children, one of which is
related to the education of their children. This essay examines Certainly, there are many
arguments raised in support and against homeschooling. Amid several claims over a decline in
teacher performance standards, a fall in test scores and the belief, whether founded by perception
of fact, that schools are unsafe of children, parents have been left with no choice but to seek
alternative formal schooling methods. One method that has been favored by parents is
homeschooling. This is a method of schooling in which parents, relatives or guardians give
children their formal education. The motivations behind homeschooling comprise of the desire
by parents to offer their children the best form of education based on either religious or secular
ethos. Another motivation is that homeschooling is a cheaper method since many parents lack
adequate financial resources for school tuition. Furthermore, there is an ongoing debate that
public schools may not provide proper education due to limited an overstretched resource-base.
The following section examines the advantages of homeschooling.
Parents have a right to oversee the upbringing and education of their children. Parents
who are charged with nurturing and shaping the destiny of their child have the explicit right and
duty to prepare them for further responsibilities. Homeschooling provides fathers and
mothersparents with the opportunity not only to bring up their children, but also to be directly
involved in their day to day educational activities. Parental investment in the learning process of
their children can be beneficial. When parents establish a formal learning structure, which they
judiciously supervise as opposed to merely handing out assignments and tests, children may
realize positive academic outcomes.

Homeschooling gives parents and children freedom of choice in the method of learning
and curriculum. Homeschooling is associated with a small class size, more time allocated to core
subjects and individualized instruction based on the needs of a students. These factors coupled
with parental investment are probable reasons why homeschooling yields positive academic
achievements. Homeschooling is also characterized by flexibility, whereby parents can tailor the
schedule and learning material to the needs of their children, who they understand well. On the
other hand, traditional schooling environments cannot dedicate equal time to every child since
they have large class sizes and extra demands from regulators and administrators. Freedom of
choice enables parents to customize the learning experience of each child to build on their
strengths and minimize their weaknesses.
Several homeschoolers believe that religion is vital in the life of their children.
Homeschooling enables children to obtain ethical, and moral and religious values that often lack
in public schools. By incorporating personal religious values and beliefs into the curriculum,
parents can pass these attributes to their children. Homeschooling also enables parents to give
special care to children with special needs. Many parents believe they can give more attention to
these children at home by customizing their education to match their needs. Children with
special needs are often embarrassed or labelled by other students. A traditional school does not
provide the best learning environment for children with special needs. In this sense,
homeschooling offers a viable choice for parents who want the best care for their children with
special needs. Similarly, homeschooling may be the best option for gifted children whose talents
and abilities may slip through the cracks in traditional schooling environments. When schooled
at home, these children can receive adequate attention than when in public schools. The
advantage of homeschooling to this group of children is that they have extra time to discover
their talents and academic interests.

A vital aspect of homeschooling is the safety that it provides away from the violence and
deviant behavior that are often characterized by public schools. Apparently, these education
establishmentsSchools are no longer able to keep children safe from an increasingly unhealthy
and violent society. In the last decade or so, incidences of mass school shootings and related gunviolence have made headlines in the media. Drugs, improper sexuality, gun violence and bullying
have well documented in public schools. Parents may have legitimate concerns when they fear
for the safety of their children in crime-ridden neighbourhoods, where guns violence is prevalent.
Moreover, cases of lone shooters who enter a public school killing and injuring children have
also been reported. Cases of terror attacks in institutionalized educational setting are
commonplace in recent times. Homeschooling eliminates the exposure of children to these vices
and helps them focus on morality and education.
The following subsection explores the disadvantages of homeschooling and subsequent response
by proponents of homeschooling.
Critics of homeschooling associate this method with does not provide the best education
to children. In some instances, parents and guardians can pass their prejudiced ideologies in the
guise of education. Because parents control every aspect of their childrens learning, children
find themselves with no choice but to conform. The freedom of education curriculum, provided
by homeschooling, can sometimes be used by parents to enforce wrong secular and religious
beliefs onto their children. Such a situation may be detrimental to the social, physical, emotional
and intellectual health of children. Apart from abusive situations, homeschooling may not
achieve similar education achievementsuccess compared to their peers in traditional schooling. In
homeschooling where the program is unstructured and children determine their learning process
and outcomes, the level of academic achievement may be diminished. Lack of parental

involvement in student learning, whereby children are given wide latitude on the learning
process can lead to poor academic performance.
One argument against homeschooling is that the quality of education is low because of
the questionable qualifications of teachers in homeschooling. Most of the teachers in
homeschooling have no qualifications or credentials associated with education curriculum.
Critics of homeschooling argue that this lack of certification may affect the academic
performance of children enrolled in homeschooling. However, proponents of home this type of
studyschooling may posit that there is no relationship between the teacher certification and
education achievement of students. A case in point is that in some instances, children in
homeschooling perform better than their counterparts in public and private schools.
Alternatively, children in some public and private schools, who are taught by certified teachers,
may also exhibit superior academic achievement that their counterparts enrolled in
homeschooling. Since the argument is only raised on a case by case basis, proponents of
homeschooling believe that teacher certification has not impact on the education achievement of
students. As a result, homeschooling is a justifiable method of providing education to children.
A fundamental opposition to homeschooling is that children lack adequate socialization.
Social skills enable children to interact with others and the outside world. Absence of or limited
socialization is a legitimate concern when children are educated exclusively by their parents or
guardians, in homes without contact with other children. Critics and proponents of
homeschooling alike have passionate points of view regarding whether socialization is achieved
or not. Homeschooled children fail to receive adequate socialization, especially, when they are
limited to only getting education at home. However, if mixed with external activities such as
community, arts/music groups, community sports teams, home school classes or groups and
summer camps/school, children can achieve socialization. What is clear though, is that when

compared to traditional education settings, homeschooling does not provide adequate
socialization.
Critics of studying at homehomeschooling opine that homes are isolated environments
that do not guarantee sufficient socialization. Homeschooled children are cut off from exposure
to group dynamics and peer pressure, necessary for children to hone their coping skills. If
children are confined to the home environment, they will not learn how to interact effectively
with their peers. Furthermore, when they encounter such situations, they will not know how to
cope because the situations will seem unfamiliar to them. As such, these children will not be
sufficiently prepared to enter the real world when it comes to relating with their peers and
colleagues in group environments. Since homeschooling only instills into children the beliefs and
ideas of their parents, these children are ill-equipped to deal to learn and accept competing
system of beliefs and ideas. Children are considered successful when they can cope at home,
with peers and in school. The problem with homeschooling is that it reduces all these three
environments into one. The consequence is that it becomes problematic for children to cope with
this situation.
As a rebuttal to the socialization argument, parents of homeschooled children may argue
that in conventional school environments, such as private and public schools, children receive
negative socialization. Instances of peer pressure, bullying, immoral conversations and gossip are
rampant in these environments than in homeschooling environment. The choice to home school
is heavily dependent on the parents need to protect children from such negative socialization.
Therefore, home schooling only offers adequate socialization derived from interaction with
adults and from outside activities. However, parents should know that as their children grow old,
they will not be able to shield them from the real world. Individuals will constantly face peer
pressure in adult life hence the need to acquire socialization early in life in order to develop

coping skills. An insulated home environment fails to offer cultural diversity compared to public
schools. Excessive parental control on matters of interaction means that children lack enough
exposure to people from diverse cultures and with different belief and value systems. When
children are exposed to different cultures, they develop tolerance, compassion and acceptance of
other individuals. Homeschooled children may thus become prejudiced because of a lack of
appreciation of others cultures and ethnicity.
Opponents of homeschooling argue that it lacks enough facilities, such as laboratories to
enhance quality learning when compared to public schools. The instructor may lack facilities or
resources required to deliver a comprehensive curriculum. Even though homeschooling has been
afforded several serialized and integrated curriculum resources, one fact is that a home cannot
offer the various improvement activities when compared to an institutionalized educational
setting. Examples of these enrichment activities include orchestra, band, sports and arts. These
activities, supported by robust facilities, are crucial for a learner.
In response to this assertion regarding resources and facilities, supporters of
homeschooling may state that just like public schools, provision of these facilities depends on
personal incomes. Income has a bearing on a childs education experience. Limited income
impacts on a parents capacity to provide equipment and experiences such as tutors for
specialized subjects like German, field trips, visit to museums, laboratory facilities, and
computers. Wealthier families can afford these facilities and experiences when compared to the
poorer counterparts, similar to schools that can afford such resources.
In conclusion, evidently, proponents and critics of homeschooling raise salient arguments
to support their positions. If well structured, homeschooling often yields high academic
achievement when parents are actively involved in the learning process. However, when poorlystructured, homeschooling can lead to poor outcomes. Additionally, homeschooling gives both
parents and children flexibility and choice of content. Therefore, Pparents can therefore tailor the

Surname 7
education to suit the needs of their children, especially gifted children and those with special
needs. Another advantage of homeschooling is that it gives parents assurances that their children
will be safe from social evils such as gun violence, terrorism and drugs. A common argument
against homeschooling is that children lack adequate socialization since they are not exposed to
diversity and peers. However, peer activities such as community sport and summer camps can
increase socialization. Another argument against homeschooling is that it does not afford
children adequate facilities needed for proper learning. However, provision of these facilities,
just like in public schools depends on the financial resources of parents. Ultimately, in order for
homeschooling to be rewarding and safe for children, parents must be actively involved in the
learning process and avoid giving children enforce wrong secular and religious beliefs that may
harm their intellectual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing. Parents also ought to provide
sufficient resources to ensure that their children receive the best education at home.
