Impactful Service Learning Abroad: Success in Preparation and Reintegration

Victoria Noyes, Robert Kropp, Melanie Martin, Rachel Emond, Lindy Harp
Service learning and study abroad programs in developing nations can be a valuable experience for honors students
who desire to engage in authentic global citizenship. Seeing the harsh realities of poverty that often accompany
these experiences can affect students in multiple ways. At times, these realities and experiences are brought back
home as feelings of frustration and grief.

This panel will engage honors faculty and students on the issue of supporting students before, during, and after a
challenging international experience, developing students cultural awareness (in and out of the classroom), and
helping students reintegrate back into college life when they return.

We will share our experience developing the inaugural service learning trip to Cambodia for the Honors College at
the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Our presentation will include qualitative and quantitative research
(collected from pre and post-trip surveys) to assess students experiences during their service learning trip and their
self-identified needs in terms of support. Further research will also highlight best practices from universities that
conduct cultural awareness, preparation, and reintegration training with students who study abroad, as well as
suggestions for how universities can begin implementing these support systems to benefit their students.
