Course Description
This course is designed to provide a basic knowledge of Modern Standard
Arabic: alphabet, phonetics and conversation. It is intended for students with
little or no previous knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic.
Evaluation
Attendance and participation (lectures & DGD): 10% *
Assignment & Presentation: 10%
Dictation & Vocabulary Tests: 10%
Homework: 10%
Midterm Exam: 25%
Final Exam: 35%
*Please note that a 1% reduction will be applied to each class you miss.

Important addition:
Absence from an examination must be justified in writing no later than 5
working days after the exam. The Department and the Faculty reserve the
right to accept or reject the reason offered. Reasons such as travel,
summer employment and misreading the exam schedule are not
accepted.
A Student is not allowed to write the final exam if he/she has not attended
at least 80% of all classes including DGD.
If the Professor notices that a students level of linguistic competency is
above the level of the course, she or he may ask the student to switch to
another course at the adequate level. The Professor and the Department
of Modern Languages and Literature reserve the right to unregister a
student who refuses to leave the course.

Students with higher language level than ARB1911 are welcome to take
other Arabic courses in our Department (i.e. Intermediate Arabic,
Introduction to Arabic Literature or Arabic Culture). Your language level
may be determined by doing the * Online Placement Test*, available at the
Department web site.
