CHEMICAL/MECHNICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

CREEP TESTING
SAFETY REGULATIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS
Students performing experimental work in the Engineering laboratory must follow and
abide by the following safety regulations and guidelines. Students must complete a safety
declaration form before they are allowed to work in the laboratory.
GENERAL

Students are not allowed to enter the laboratory without the permission of the lecturer
or laboratory assistant.
Unauthorized experimental work in the laboratory is strictly
forbidden.
Prior to the use of laboratory out of timetabled periods, students must apply for usage
from relevant laboratory staff.
Students are not allowed to work alone in the laboratory.
Bags and books must not be left on benches or on stools and should be placed
in designated area. Do not block passageways or fire exits.
All working spaces must always be kept clean.
Long hair, ties, jewellery and clothing must never be allowed to hang loose, since any
of these items can easily become entangled in the moving parts of machinery, and hence
cause serious injury.
Suitable clothing must be worn; long trousers or jeans are recommended for boys
and dresses, slacks or jeans for girls. In particular, sleeveless t-shirts and sleeveless
blouses are prohibited.
Students must wear covered footwear during laboratory and workshop sessions.
Sandals, open-toed shoes, slippers or similar footwear are prohibited. Students may
be refused entry to the laboratory or workshop if not in proper footwear.
Storage and/or consumption of food and drink, smoking and the application of
cosmetics in the laboratory are not allowed.
Indiscipline in the laboratory or workshop (e.g. whistling, horseplay etc.) will not
be tolerated.
No reagent, solution or apparatus is to be removed from the laboratory without
approval from the lecturer.
Do not pour waste down the sink unless authorized to do so by your
lecturer.
Defective equipment or broken glassware must be reported to the lecturer or lab
assistant.
Do not run in the laboratory or along corridors. Exercise care when opening and
closing doors on entering and leaving the laboratory.
Laboratory doors must be kept closed at all times during practical
classes.

SAFETY NOTE (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY & WORKSHOP)

While dealing with volatile and toxic chemicals during this experiment, the chemicals may be
utilised safely under the extraction hood since the fumes can be harmful if exposed for a long
period of time. Be sure that the hood is working properly. Safety glasses, gloves, respirator
filters and appropriate lab attires (including lab coat and shoes) MUST BE WORN at all
times as precautionary measures. Waste solutions containing chemicals SHOULD NOT be
poured into the sink. Waste solutions may be kept on the bench so that the Laboratory
Technicians will dispose them off safely once the practical classes get over. Consider all the
compounds used in this lab to be poisonous if ingested. The Vapour Liquid Equilibrium
(VLE) apparatus is made of glass and therefore, be careful while handling it. During the
distillation process, the glassware will be hot. Do not put large volumes of cold fluid into the
hot Round Bottommed flask. The thermal shock could break the apparatus. When adding
material to the system, use a pipette or a syringe and add the material slowly, injecting it into
the pool of boiling liquid. Do not spray it on the sides of the Round Bottomed (RB) flask.

OBJECTIVES
1.
To determine the effect of temperature, material and stress on the creep rate.
2.
To obtain a graph of stress vs strain rate for different material under different
temperature.

STORY OF INTEREST
It is so hot, daddy! the youngest daughter, Salina, told her father as they are approaching
the beach where the family has planned to stay for a weekon vacation.
This season is the hottest season ever. The average temperature, so far, was risen by about
one degree compared to last year. Probably, global warming is true. The heat is really
annoying. A commentator said on the weather channel just last night.
The seventeen-year-high school girl is looking for something in the trunk of the family car.
Mother became little impatient as Salina keeps shuffling bags, taking one bag, open it and
look it before close it again. About ten minutes have passed while every member of the
family was waiting for Salina to finish her mysterious search.
I found it, Mommy! Salina called her mother.
What did you find, dear?

It is the plastic rope that my school teacher had given to me last week asking me to do an
experiment on it with my little brother and sister as we are travelling and exposed directly to
the sun.
Are you serious, Salina? Father asked suspiciously.
Yes, daddy.
What experiment is that? We came here for a vacation. You are losing your brain,
daughter, father directed his sorrowful voice towards his daughter.
Apparently, Salina was serious. She took the plastic rope in her hand, called her brother and
sister, and seriously gave them her instructions. She brought a ruler to some measurements.
The three children found it very interesting to distance themselves from parents of course,
doing experiment alone.
Wow, my teacher was right. The plastic rope gets longer and longer as my sister and
brother keep pulling it away from each other. My teacher told me to be careful about
excessive pulling, Salina whispers with herself. It is just enough, guys now, Salina told
her brother and sister. I am satisfied with the results. I will surprise all class saying my
teacher was right.
