Three most predominant questions people ask in my entire life are:
1. Being a civil engineer how you became a computer professional?
In 1967, in a valedictory class, one professor told us, civil engineer does not mean you restrict your career
to civil engineering. Not by desire, design or ambition, by chance I became a computer professional thanks to
Govt.of Tamilnadu, who sent us to IBM (Chennai) to be trained as programmer cum systems Analyst in 1971.
And alas, all throughout my life I have been working with people half my age.
2. You look young for your (old) age?
This is purely by Gods design and desire, not mine, Thank god.
3. What your children are doing?
We had only son Dr.Gopinath and we lost him in a freak car accident near London where he was driving
from his hospital to residence. We live by the strength of support provided by our friends and relatives. In
1997 as we were thanking God for wonderful life he had given us, suddenly he has exhibited alternate destiny
he has designed for us. We cant blame God, after all. But for passing acquaintances , we just tell them our
son is a doctor and working in UK. No use spreading gloom on them. One son/daughter is not a right practice.

38 years of my 41 years career life upto 2008 was with L&T where I had to move from
place to place about 10 times, shifting residences 20 times before settling down in
Chennai. Amidst tight work schedules throughout, and gypsy life setups, I could lead a
satisfying and happy life with my family, fulfil family commitments of ensuring sisters/
brother settle in their lives happily as well as daughters also in later period. All in all, it
was a challenging yet successful period.
Lifestyle changes on retirement for everybody. When I retired, I engaged myself in yoga
as well as swimming (right from learning to competitions) vigorously which help me to be
busy and fit.
Keeping busy is keeping fit

I came to US in 1967 soon after graduation. It was then a big change culturally. Then there
were not that many indians, about 200 at University of Illinois, a campus of nearly 30,000
students. I made a conscious effort to assimilate into the American culture, lived with an
American room-mate got to understand their culture.
I got married in 1972 to Nalini who was from Adayar, Madras. Our two sons, Kris (born in 1976)
and Jay (1979) grew up in San Jose, CA in a some what diverse community, back then still
predominantly white American majority in schools.
The situation today is quite different with a flood of immigrants from India and China and
other countries. The white Americans are a minority in schools at all levels. I dont see much
difference between the kids here (California) and the kids in India. So there is less of a
cultural shock between the two countries now than what it was 50 years ago.
I am not making any judgments as to whether this is a good or bad thing, merely an observation.

After spending a wonderful period in the college days,I took up the challenging work in
TATA SREEL in the eastern part of India at Jamshedpur. It was a totally different
environment, the language, the social fabric, etc. However with the Cosmopolitan nature of
the colleagues and with the support of some friends from CEG who had already joined
there before I joined, I was able to meet the challenges and emerged successful. With
people from all regions of India working in Tata Steel, life was a pleasure, as the Tata
Steel Management took care of the needs of the peoples who work there very nicely.
The colleagues were very friendly, exhibiting mutual help and support in official as well as
in social life.
Looking back, it was a satisfying life during the working period and I and my family
thoroughly enjoyed living in a place much different from the home state environment. The
life was so very excellent there that I never thought of changing job.

Wow, have we come a long way - in more ways than just on the time dimension. Think about where we all are now and
where we were in 1967 on the cusp of graduation from CEG! Speaking for myself, never would have imagined - looking thru
that time-prism, that here I would be with three grown children, five grandchildren (all doing better than I was at that stage of
life - whew!!). No, that certainly was not in my crystal ball in 1967. I am certain that most if not all of our colleagues can speak
to that same sense of wonderment!
As I reflect on my personal journey - career-wise, family-wise, maturity-wise(yes - mea culpa, I was low on the
maturity scale in 1967), financial-condition-wise, you-name-it-wise, it has been a remarkable and generally an "exceeds
expectations" (if you have worked in a corporate environment, you understand that phrase!) journey. And the thing that
most catches my breath in thinking back on the journey, is - there was no master plan! Just one day at a time, one step
at a time. Most gratifying to me and my wife (Julie) was putting our three kids thru college (private shools and no college
debt), seeing them find a life partner and get married, and, icing on the cake, giving us five of the most beautiful and loving
grandchildren. We are truly blessed.
Looking forward to re-connecting with old friends and colleagues. All the best.

My dad always taught me that being a good, compassionate and caring human being was
far more important than being religious.
Life has emotional ups and downs. Never let the downs keep you down for too long.
Learn from your mistakes and strive to get back on the top.
Set your goals and never give up no matter how big the obstacle. The reward is well
worth the blood, sweat and tears.
Finally, remember that contentment and good health are more than a kingdom.

I believe in crossing the bridge when it comes and dont start worrying about it in
advance. For me family life was more important than my career. That is why I opted for
VRS from a lucrative senior level job in Tata Steel in Kolkata and came back to Chennai
to be with my wife and children who needed my moral support.
I believe in being young at heart and as fit as possible. My greatest relaxation is enjoying
jokes with my Tennis friends every morning and also having some exercise by playing one
or two sets of doubles Tennis.

Life in my youth was a struggle. Last 25 years has been generally good on all fronts personal, family,
career, social etc. It has always been my endeavour to catch up with old friends in school, college,
personal, official, to reminesce the good times we have spent together. Have been an avid traveller and
also enjoy reading. In this electronic age with abundant information flow, i find it difficult to cope, yet
learning. The real change post retirement has been my affliction and addiction to farming, which gives
me and my wife immense satisfaction. We have now turned to a village life and find it healthy. We are
passionate about charity and find immense pleasure in educating impoverished girl children and catering
to the needs of the poor in the village. Apart from our frequent foreign jaunts, we like to explore various
places within our wonderful country. Finally very grateful to almighty for all his kind mercies for making
our retired life enjoyable.

Throughout my my life so far, I have experienced to a great extent, the phenomenon of what you resist persist
and I understood that if one tries to go with the flow in the lifes stream he can lead a stress free life. While
facing any critical situation if one can absorb the impacts and allow them to pass by, there wont be much hard
feelings to haunt ever again.
One cannot avoid expectations in life and it can be seen that in reality, the results are directly proportional to
the efforts and the perseverance. We often have seen great expectations which are undue,. end up in deep
disappointments. This again lays stress on the proverbial statement that there is no substitute for hard work.

A reflection of journey in ones life is very interesting and a good learning.
Radio to TVs, iPad, mobile etc shows the continuously changing world. Keeping up to the change and
pace is challenge. Getting a loan to buy a house, car or getting a phone connection in early 70s was very
difficult. Now look at the change.
We moved on fighting obsolescence. All of us have crossed some milestones in life cherishing every
event. There were learning curves. Many are proud of having achieved something in life. You win some
and lose some. One cannot enumerate all.
Evaluate the circumstances and take a rational decision, like calling a spade is a spade. That is how I
conducted my life and overall it was working out.
Did we plan a Golden jubilee meet while studying? Probably not.
Who would have imagined that a few of our classmates will be no more today? It is very sad indeed.
Life is unpredictable though. Time is a great leveler and let us live in harmony and in touch and in good
health.

I had a good challenging and satisfying life right through.

Whenever the challenges seem to be overwhelming, God, had been guiding me
and family members and friends had been supporting me so that I could get
thru nicely. God had been very merciful to bestow a great life.
Sometimes I feel I had not been giving back to the society adequately. Not
able to get into any service activities.
I have been retired for over two years now. Since then, my wife and I have
started travelling bit, visiting temples, sight seeing etc.
