mark in the field of higher education in India
imparting quality education in a multi-cultural
ambience, intertwined with extensive applicationoriented research. VIT University was established
with the aim to provide quality higher education on
par with International Standards. It persistently
seeks and adopts innovative methods to improve
the quality of higher education on a consistent
basis. Established by well-known educationalist and
former parliamentarian, Dr. G. Viswanathan,
Founder and Chancellor, a visionary who
transformed VIT into a center of excellence in
higher technical education. VIT Chennai is ably
spearheaded by Mr. Sankar Viswanathan, Vice
President, Ms. Kadhambari S. Viswanathan,
Assistant Vice President, Dr. Anand A. Samuel,
Vice Chancellor and Dr. P. Gunasekaran, Pro Vice
Chancellor of VIT University. They share in the
mission to make VIT a global center. The focus is
to:
To maximize the Industrial Connectivity
To create Centers of Excellence in niche areas
of research
To enrich Technological and Managerial Human
Capital nurtured in a multicultural ambience
To provide common platform for the
agglomeration of ideas of personnel from
various walks of life for learning enrichment
To create opportunities and exploit the
available resources to benefit industry/society

ABOUT SMBS
School of Mechanical and Building Sciences
(SMBS) at VIT Chennai was established to impart
state-of-the art education, training and research in the
field of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. SMBS
provides undergraduate program (B.Tech.) in
Mechanical and Civil Engineering and postgraduate
program (M.Tech.) in CAD/CAM, Mechatronics and
Structural Engineering & and Ph.D. / M.S. (Research).
The School has qualified faculty members with good
theoretical background and valuable industrial
experience in diverse fields like Design, Thermal,
CAD/CAM, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Energy and
Environment, Nanotechnology, Structural engineering
and Construction Management.
About the seminar
Mechatronics is the synergistic integration of
mechanics, electronics, control theory, and computer
science within product design and manufacturing, in
order to improve and/or optimize its functionality. The
mechatronics approach helps in integration of
different technologies to provide solution to many
engineering problems. Robotics is the premier
application of the mechatronics to solve many
automation problems. Mechatronic-design methods
today emphasize mechanical modeling before any
hardware gets built. Model-Based Design simplifies
the development of mechatronic systems by providing
a
common
environment
for
design
and
communication
across
different
engineering
disciplines.
Model-based design provides an efficient
approach for establishing a common framework for
communication throughout the design process while
supporting the development cycle. Model-based
control system design improves quality, shortens
development time, lowers engineering cost, and
reduces rework. Evaluating a control system's
performance, functionality, and robustness in a
simulation environment avoids the time and expense

of developing hardware and software. This seminar

exclusively deals with design and development of
automated mechatronic systems and robots. Model
based design and control of these systems is a hot
topic of research worldwide and has high demand
in the industries.
