GSM BSS
BTS GPS Synchronization Feature Parameter Description

2 Overview

Overview

2.1 Introduction
The GPS is a round-the-clock satellite navigation system that communicates with a BTS in
wireless mode. The GPS provides accurate three-dimensional location, velocity, and time for
worldwide users. The BTS GPS Synchronization feature enables a BTS clock to be synchronized
with the GPS clock source. After the BTS is synchronized with the GPS, the error of the frame
synchronization over the Um interface is smaller than one bit. Therefore, frequency reuse is
improved and the interference is decreased in the wireless network.
Converting an asynchronous network into a synchronous network can effectively reduce the
interference, increase the network capacity, and improve the performance of the KPIs related to
the radio network.

3 Technical Description

Technical Description

In the GSM, the clock among BTSs is asynchronous, which causes overlap of timeslots. In an
asynchronous network where frequency reuse occurs at short intervals, overlap of timeslot
causes unnecessary and unpredictable interference that cannot be prevented. The interference
will become a bottleneck that restricts network capacity. Therefore, the BTS uses the GPS clock
source for clock synchronization over the network.
NOTE

The dual-mode satellite card installed on the USCU of Huawei BTS supports Global Navigation Satellite
System (GLONASS) clock synchronization. The principle of GLONASS clock synchronization is the same
as that of GPS clock synchronization. Unless otherwise specified, GPS clock synchronization in this
document includes GLONASS clock synchronization.
For details about the other clock synchronization modes and basic concepts about synchronization, see
Synchronization Feature Parameter Description.

3 Technical Description

3.1 GPS Clock Synchronization Process

Figure 3-1 shows the GPS clock synchronization solution.
Figure 3-1 GPS clock synchronization solution

The GPS clock synchronization procedure is as follows:

1.

The GPS antenna receives the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)-compliant GPS satellite
signals at a rate of 1575.42 MHz and then transmits them to the GPS satellite card connected
to the USCU/DGPS.

2.

The GPS satellite card processes the signals to obtain the GPS absolute time and accurate
1PPS pulse signals and transmits the obtained information to the main control board of the
BTS.

3.

The clock module on the main control board of the BTS performs the following:

4.

a.

Compares the clock signals it receives against the ones generated by the oscillator to
obtain the frequency offset.

b.

Adjusts the frequency of the oscillator based on the frequency offset in real time.

c.

Performs phase-locking and frequency division on the clock signals, and then
generates clock signals required by the BTS.

d.

Adjusts the frame number based on the absolute frame number calculated from the
GPS absolute time.

The main control board of the BTS distributes the clock signals to the other boards of the
BTS.

After the network clock is synchronized, demodulation performance may reduce if the BTSs
have the same frequencies and training sequence numbers (TSCs). To improve demodulation
performance, adjust the in frame bit offset FRAMEBITOFFSET(BSC6900,BSC6910) on the

3 Technical Description

BTSs that have the same frequencies and TSCs. For example, you can set FRAMEBITOFFSET
(BSC6900,BSC6910) to 0 on one BTS and 80 on the other.

3.2 Advantages and Disadvantages of GPS Clock

Synchronization
Advantages
l

The GPS clock synchronization solution can be used for time synchronization and
frequency synchronization.

The GPS clock synchronization solution can accurately provide the UTC-based time.

Disadvantages
l

The GPS clock synchronization solution requires each base station to be equipped with a
GPS reference receiver, which increases the overall capital expenditure (CAPEX).

The GPS antenna requires the field angle of 45 of the centrum to be clear from obstacles.
Therefore, the antenna site selection becomes limited.

Feeders need to be installed between the GPS antenna and the BTS. In the case of a
complicated construction venue or building, feeder installation can be difficult. In addition,
feeder installation requires the consent of both the house owners and the property
management authorities, and therefore the negotiation may be challenging.
NOTE

For details about how to install the GPS satellite antenna system on the BTS side, see GPS Satellite Antenna
System Quick Installation Guide. You can find this document by visiting the website http://
support.huawei.com and then choose Support > Documentation > Wireless > Antenna Feeder >
Antenna & Feeder System.

Using MML Commands

On the BSC LMT, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Run the ADD BTSBRD command to add a USCU board. In this step, set Board Type to USCU
(USCU).
Step 2 Run the SET BTSUSCUBP command with Board Parameter Configuration Enabled set to
YES(YES) and Cable Type, GPS Work Mode, Cable Length, and Antenna Power Supply
Switch set based on the actual situation.
Step 3 Run the SET BTSCLK command with Clock Type set to TRCGPS_CLK(Trace GPS
Clock).
Step 4 (Optional) On the GBTSs that have the same frequencies and TSCs configured, run the following
commands:
l On one GBTS, run the SET BTSCLK command with In Frame BitOffset set to 0.
l On the other GBTS, run the SET BTSCLK command with In Frame BitOffset set to 80.
NOTE

The values 0 and 80 in this step are for reference only. The value of the In Frame BitOffset parameter
ranges from -80 to 80, but the GBTS supports only the range from 0 to 80. If this parameter is set to a value
ranging from -1 to -80, the BTS determines that the in frame bit offset is 0.
