EVART Evart Reads is off

and running at the elementary
school.
Evart Reads is a program in
which community members
help students develop their reading skills.
The program enlists the assistance of Reading Superheroes
who are paired with struggling
readers. Other aspects of the
program include ensuring
students have ready access to
books. Children ages 0-5 who
are signed up through the Dolly
Parton Imagination Library will
receive a free book each month.
Local businesses will also
place free books with book partners. A book partner is a place
where children linger.
To further encourage reading
in the community, a number
of Free Little Libraries will go
up around town. A Little Free
Library is a location where
books can easily be exchanged.
Little Free Libraries work by
users taking a book to read and
then dropping it back off when
theyre finished reading it. Users may also keep the book or
contribute gently used books to
the library.

According to Jennifer Rounds,
the early literacy coordinator,
those interested in assisting
with the Evart Reads program
can help in a variety of ways.
They may volunteer to be a
Reading Superhero, provide
snacks or supplies for volunteers int the Volunteer Welcome
Center at the elementary school,
sponsor Imagination Library

mailing costs, host a Free Little

Library or contribute in other
ways.
Anyone interested in becoming a reading mentor or visiting
a classroom to do some guest
reading may contact Rounds at
the elementary school.
Two mentor training sessions
are approaching. One will be
held Oct. 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. A

second session will be offered

Oct. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Evart Reads is an outgrowth
of the Rising tide Initiative.
It is a result of a partnership
between the Mecosta-Osceola
Intermediate School District,
the city of Evart and Evart
Public Schools. Those interested

agencies in generating
support from community
leaders, local politicians,
business owners, faithbased organizations,
landlords, volunteers and
more to maximize the
availability of quality
rental housing and to provide the assistance and
needed services.
The point was to have
a robust conversation of
how we can best serve
veterans in our own communities, said Stephanie
Oles of MSHDA, noting
that every veteran deserves quality housing.

The goal is to get a veteran from homeless and into

housing within 90 days.
You all have a great advantage because you have
a lot of resources, Oles
said of the community.
Rodgers said her agency
assists veterans with
housing stability from
being literally homeless
or who are close to losing
their housing, car repairs
and houseware.
Rodgers said some grant
money that MMCAA
receives specifies that
the veteran has to have
at least one day of active
duty. She said but those
dishonorably discharged
dont fall through the

cracks, there are grants

that can help assist them.
The group broached the
subject of veterans suffering from mental illness.
Osceola County Veterans
Service Director Edward
Maldonado said most of
the veterans he sees that
need extra help, are dealing with depression. He
said drugs and alcohol
seem to be prevalent
among some veterans.
Reed City City Manager,
Ron Howell said it may be
a police officer coming in
contact with a homeless
veteran at 2 a.m.
Who do they call,
Howell asked.
Maldonado said they

could call him. Or call the

Veterans Crisis Line.
An estimated 4,000 veterans were homeless in
Michigan in 2015. While
MSHDA said the number
has decreased by six percent in 2016, there is still
more work to do.
There is no reason any
veteran should be homeless more than 90 days,
Oles said.
Larry Emig, Chair of
Osceola County Board of
Commissioners said the
county has made strides,
but there is more work to
do.
We certainly have a
ways to go, said Emig, a
veteran.

The quarter is there for size reference.

What WAS it?

Last weeks mystery item

hails from the 1970s automotive realm.
Marketed with the phrase
a new dimension in travel
convenience, this goldtoned plastic accessory was
designed to sit in the front
between the driver and
passenger. It straddled the
console zone. Note its little
adjustable feet which are
complete with claws to
better grip the automotive
carpeting.
If you look closely at its

overall shape between the

two visible legs and directly
below the spigot, you will
see a subtle curve. The concave shape was to match the
curve or hump of cars. This
gave birth to the accessorys
name: the Humper Console
Thermos.
The logo included natures favorite hump-bearing animal the camel.
The Humpers portability
was part of its appeal. The
four indented circular zones
were sized to accept Styrofoam cups (their diameter

will not accommodate a contemporary soda bottle). The

large interior cavity is filled
with the travelers beverage
of choice. That beverage is
added via the screw top port
hidden beneath the handle.
Its then mid color-tour, or
snowbird migration, or
Ludington beach-bounddrive, dispensed via the
pushbutton spigot.
We had one person who
correctly identified the

County Sheriff deputies

County commissioners

the U.S.Department of
Agriculture. This would
allow the sheriff s office to
purchase 13 body cameras
for deputies.

EVART Fixing a leaky

roof over Evart City Hall
isnt as simple as calling a
contractor.
The city hall, built in
1887 as a railroad depot,
cant just have any roof
placed on it, said councilman Dan Elliott.
Elliott said the historic
building which was purchased as the city hall using federal money, needs
to remain as historic as
possible, per the Michigan
State Historic Preservation Officer.
It all comes down to
historic preservation,
Elliott said. The federal
government expects it to
be preserved in a historic
way.
The city could go out and
put any roof on it that they
want, said Elliott. But,
they would be liable to
then pay back the federal
money the city used to buy

On Oct. 9, about 85 walkers participated in the 35th

Walk sponsored by Church
World Service. Walkers left
from the Reed City Middle
School and followed a
10-kilometer route to raise
about $10,000.
Along with helping provide food and clean water
around the world, a portion of the money will go to
the Reed City Ministerial
Association Food Pantry.

the building if they didnt

keep it intact.
Its a great facility that
we received with federal
resources, Elliott said.
We cant just say we are
going out and doing something different.
We need a new roof,
said Evart City Manager
Zack Szakacs, who solicited bids to replace the
attention-seeking item.
Bids are due in today (Oct.
20) for the roof top.
Until the proposals are
opened, its unknown how
much the endeavor will
cost, Szakacs said.
The city is looking to get
a historical site designation for the building.
By having it named a
historical site, Elliott said
it would make the city
eligible for grant money
that could help pay for the
impending roof.
We are trying to pre-

serve what was there in

the 1870s, Elliott said. It
is a star attraction on the
Pere Marquette.
City officials said replacing the 20-year-old roof is
of urgency.
We need to get a roof up
there as soon as possible,
Elliott said. I assure, this
is not an easy undertaking.
Because of the historical
presence, the citys hope
of placing a permanent
roof atop the stage area for
musicals, which connects
to city hall, may not be a
possibility, Szakacs said.
There is a canvass roof
topping the stage area, but
keeping in line with the
State Historical Preservation Officers guidelines,
may not be realistic.
Council members will
discuss the item further at
their Nov. 7, meeting at 7
p.m. at Evart City Hall.
