Tutorial 1c
As site engineer, you have been asked to monitor the paving works for the subbase. From
the data given, determine whether the paving works can be accepted or not. The
requirement is to achieve more than 95% compaction.
Data from sand replacement method:
Mass of soil from hole = 4800 gram
Mass of sand in hole = 2768 gram
Bulk density of sand = 1.255 gram/cm3
Maximum dry density in laboratory (MDD) = 2.155 Mg/m3
Data from laboratory moisture content determination:
Wet mass of the soil sample = 369 g
Dry mass of the soil sample = 350 g

Tutorial 1d
Given below are 4 stockpiles of aggregate for hot mix asphalt.
i. Determine the proper blending proportion for the proposed mix. If your first trial did
not meet the grading requirement, explain what need to be done.
ii. Determine combined Specific Gravity (SG)

The material was compacted at site and field density test (sand replacement method) was carried
out.
The following results were recorded:
Mass of sand to fill the hole
Mass of moist crushed aggregate from test hole

3690g
4315g

Moisture content for the crushed aggregate sample:

(original mass)
(final mass)

312g

The density of sand is 1252 kg/m3,

Mass of sand in cone 1275g
Maximum dry density of the crushed aggregate from the laboratory compaction is
2185 kg/m3,
Determine the relative compaction (DOC) of the compacted layer. Was the road
base properly compacted?
Tutorial 1h
i. Show the compactive effort for Proctor test for one sample preparation is of 12,375 ft- lbf/ft
ii. Show the compactive effort of Modified Proctor Test for one sample test is of 56,250 ft-lbf/ft
