What is environmental education?

Environmental education is a process by which people develop awareness, concern, and

knowledge of the environment and learn to use this understanding to preserve, conserve and
utilize the environment in a sustainable manner for the benefit of the present and future
generations.

It entails the will to take personal initiatives and social participation to achieve sustainability.

Goals, Objectives and Aims of Environmental Education

The goals of Environmental Education are:
1. To improve the quality of Environment.
2. To create awareness among the people on environmental problems and conservation.
3. To create an atmosphere so that people participate in decision- making and develop
capabilities to evaluate the developmental programs.

Aims of Environmental Education

The basic aim of environment education is to provide different groups of people as well as
graduates in a variety of professional fields with the knowledge needed to develop a sense of
responsibility towards the environment and the rational utilization of its riches.

It also aims to make of this knowledge and skills to preserve, conserve and utilize the
environment in a sustainable manner for the benefit of present and future generations

Importance of Environmental Education

1. Increase student engagement in science.
2. Improves student achievement in core subject areas.
3. Helps address nature deficit disorder

Focal points of Environmental Education

Concern for reality by exposing students to the real life world, natural and social environment
in which they live.
Enable students to analyse,evaluate and draw inferences about problems and issues related to
environment.
Enable students understand environment issues and take positive environmental actions.
Develop skills of environmental actions among students in order to facilitate the journey of
mankind towards sustainability.
