Carbonates are the mineral compounds of carbon and oxygen, and are
widespread in the earth's crust, although the number of known species is
not very high (about 100).
Of these the most abundant are the alkaline earth and alkali metal iron.
They are known and exploit large deposits of calcite, magnesite, siderite and
dolomite.
