NORTH PLAINS OR 97133-8392
Dear Bonnie:
Congratulations! You've been chosen from among thousands of applicants to participate in
the 42st Annual Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) at West Point. Be proud of your selection it's a direct result of your hard work and accomplishments.
Since you are already logged on, you know you have access to https://candidate.usma.edu.
Please use this portal to: Accept or Decline this Offer; Verify your Preference Week; Post your
Shirt Size, and Print the enclosed Registration Forms. The Registration Forms/Checklist and
payment must be returned by April 10th, 2016 to confirm your acceptance. We may not be able
to accommodate you if your forms arrive after that date. If you have any questions about SLE
or if anything arises that could prevent you from attending, please call us for assistance (our contact
information is at the end of this letter).
Your selection to SLE does more than invite you to attend the seminar. It also confirms
you as one of our very top candidates for admission. The website listed above will allow you to
review and update your file, provide helpful information to you and your family about West Point
and gives you the opportunity to contact us at any time.
There are four things you should start doing immediately as you consider attending college
at West Point:

1. SEEK A NOMINATION
If you haven't yet sought a nomination, do so immediately. Remember, only candidates who
obtain a nomination may be admitted to West Point. We strongly recommend that you apply
for a nomination from each source for which you are eligible. You may apply for a nomination
from your member of Congress in the House of Representatives and your two United States
Senators. You may also seek a nomination from the Vice President of the United States.
Additionally, if you have a parent who is on active military duty, serving in the Reserve
Components or retired from the Armed Forces of the United States, you may be eligible for a
service-connected nomination from the Department of the Army. For more information on these
and other nominating sources, please see http://admissions.usma.edu/cong_nominations.html.

2. INCREASE YOUR COMPETITIVENESS FOR ADMISSION

Admission to West Point is extremely competitive. We seek moral candidates who also
demonstrate strong leadership, scholarship, athleticism, and are medically qualified. You
can demonstrate excellence in these areas by:
Leadership: seek opportunities in athletic, extracurricular, church, scouting, community
and other activities.
Scholarship:
Continue to excel in your academic program.
Consider taking the SAT and ACT at least twice. We use the highest combination
of scores in your qualification process.
Ensure you submit writing scores when you send us your SAT and / or ACT
results. We must receive a writing score with each of these exams.
Athleticism:
Seek membership in school or community athletic programs - compete!
You're probably already training for the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA),
which consists of pull-ups, a kneeling basketball throw, sit-ups, push-ups, a 40
yard shuttle run and a one mile run. You must pass the CFA-see the Candidate Portal
for more information.
Medical Qualification:
After demonstrating excellence in each of the above and completing a good portion
of your application, you'll be contacted by the Department of Defense Medical
Examination and Review Board (DODMERB) to schedule a medical examination in
your local area sometime this summer.
Once notified schedule the exam as soon as you can and respond promptly to any
follow-up requests for information.
If you're told that you're medically disqualified, we may request a waiver for you
from DODMERB, depending upon your medical condition and competitiveness
as a candidate for admission. You can't request a waiver-if we do on your
behalf we'll contact you and let you know what you're required to do next.
NO MATTER HOW COMPETITIVE YOU ARE, WE CAN'T OFFER YOU
ADMISSION UNTIL YOU'RE MEDICALLY QUALIFIED. GET THIS
EXAM DONE EARLY!

3. LEARN ABOUT WEST POINT, ROTC, AND THE ARMY

There are tremendous online resources available to you and your family regarding the college
and career that you're considering:
www.usma.edu West Point's home page.
www.goarmysports.com The official website of West Point's intercollegiate athletics.
www.goarmy.com/rotc/ If for some reason West Point is unable to offer you admission,
a four-year, full-tuition Army ROTC Scholarship could be an excellent alternative. Army
ROTC's leadership and commissioning program is offered at 273 host institutions and at
more than 1,000 partnership colleges and universities in all 50 states, the District of

Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Among those colleges are six Senior Military

Colleges offering a regimented program similar to West Point, with the added benefit of
enjoying a traditional college experience. Chances are that Army ROTC is offered at a
school suited to your unique preferences. In addition to tuition, an ROTC Scholarship
pays for your books, academic fees, and provides you a stipend of up to $500 each
month. We want to help you realize your goal of attending West Point but we also
want you to know that Army ROTC can help you fulfill your educational and career
goals.

organization you will enter upon graduation from West Point.
