Definition: What is a country?
We know what a country is. We know what our country is. And Wikipedia defines
a country as "A nation with its own government occupying a certain territory"
But it is actually a lot more than that.
A country is a lot more than a large area of land inhabited by people who share the
same beliefs, language and culture. It is more than a collection of homes and
families United under a flag. A country is the home of millions of people who
identify themselves as its citizens, who are loyal to its land, its flag, its government
and its citizens. People who would do all it takes to pay their part on making their
country successful.
Because a country, their country; is their home.
What makes one country different from another?
The reason why the citizens of one country may be happier than those living in
another country is because of how successful their country is.
A country's success is measured by the condition of its economy, its rate of
education and employment and the health facilities that are offered by the
government to its citizens. In democratic countries, the performance of a
government is judged on how prosperous the country was during their tenure.
As an individual, there are some things that you can do to play your role in making
your country more successful and improve the life of your fellow countrymen.
Here are 10 things you can do to make your country successful
1) Focus on your education
Knowledge is power. Getting a good education is good for you and extremely
vital, since your educational qualification will allow you to use your acquired skills
and get a job. This job will then benefit the country in different ways, depending on
its nature. Every single individual can contribute in some way, even if its minute.
jobs resulted in 260,000 indirect jobs. (Link 8) Despite the fact that Mr. Clinton is
now leading a happily retired life (cant be said for his wife, though) there are
plenty of recent statistics that support this argument.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to this: create more jobs, period.
4) Learn and teach new skills
The great philosopher, Aristotle was once quoted saying: Those who know, do.
Those that understand, teach (Link 9) It is an undeniable fact that teachers have an
extraordinary amount of influence over children, something which we can take
advantage of in a positive way. If teachers start considering it their responsibility to
train children to become better humans, teach them that discrimination is wrong,
then we have already completed half the journey of becoming a better country.
According to a study by the Gates Foundation (Link 10), teachers spend nearly 10
hours and 40 minutes a day, working. Thats a work week comprising of nearly
53 hours! But not all the responsibility lies on teachers. As the old saying goes, life
is the best teacher. We face plenty of events later in life which force us to acquire
some new technical skill, vocational or computer skills for example.
According to a recent study by The Institute of Internal Auditors, technical skills
are extremely important. With the understanding business skill taking the major
chunk of the pie at 72 %.( Link 11) The country with the most technically skilled
workers, according to a recent survey, is Switzerland. ( Link 12) The fact that it is
also one of the best economies in the world, proves that learning new skills does
indeed make your country better.
higher than countries with similar economic set ups like Canada. Hey, its a
superpower for a reason right? And its clearly not all finance or military. Millions
of people apply for a US citizenship every year with hopes of living the American
Dream.
Similarly, sometimes the building needs to be on a more personal level. Studies
have shown that the level of trust people have in their politicians also correlates to
a countrys overall success. The global competitiveness survey that was recently
proves this fact. While most Asian countries failed to make the list of have
trustworthy politicians, the ones that did didnt score very high. The country that
has the least trusted politicians according to the survey is Italy. (Link 14) Italys
economic recession and downfall are no secret, perhaps this is one of the reasons
why.
6) Be a dutiful citizen
Pope Francis once said that We all have the duty to do good (Link 15) Being a
dutiful citizen is one of the prime factors of a countrys success. After all, there is
only so much a government can do. A lot depends on us, the citizens. Now it may
seem that being a dutiful citizen, while very good at a personal level, can hardly
effect the countrys success in any way.
The statistics, however, tell a different story.
According to a report published by the United Nation (Link 16) if volunteers were
a nation then the top three nations are China, India and the United States
respectively. Surprise, surprise. The same report further confirms our hypothesis by
stating that volunteer contribute to a whopping 6% of the countrys GDP. Similar
studies conducted by the International Monetary Fund prove that a countrys
wealth is directly proportional to how responsible their citizens are
(Link 17)
A country that used to import everything from wheat to timber now produces
its own strawberries.
(Link18) It also satisfies nearly 60% if its required domestic fruit demand, which
is a lot more than other countries can say. Whats important is to give incentives to
local businessmen, special loans and preferential treatment which will help them
beat off competition from ever hungry MNCs.
According to the U.S small business administration, small businesses represent
99.7 percent of all employer firms (Link 19)
8) Own your country
Patriotism is another key feature in increasing a countrys success. According to a
study published by Forbes, the worlds most patriotic country is the United
States of America. (Link 20) With Australia coming a close third. Additionally, it
is also very important to represent your country wherever you go. Sometimes a
countrys success can also be measured by how others perceive it, because
sometimes a moral victory is the best victory.
9) Foreign Exchange
Foreign exchange is an extremely essential factor in increasing a countrys success.
It is a well-known fact that the amount of foreign exchange a country has is
directly proportional to how well its economy is running and in turn how
successful it is.
The CIA ranks China number one in the list of foreign exchange reserves (Link
21) a statistic that is testament to the fact that it is one of the worlds leading
economies. Thats not all China is also ranked number one in a similar list by
Forbes which proves that foreign exchange is absolutely crucial in making a
country successful.
10) Participate in politics
There is an old saying; when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Sometimes
its not enough to lay down, rant a little and go to bed. Sometimes you need to step
up and do something different. They say if you want something done..do it
yourself.
What better platform to do it than politics?
In a nutshell, there are plenty of ways to make a country successful, if you follow
these ten ways then your country is sure to be a resounding success!
