Cataloging Service Bulletin
With t h i s number, Cataloging Service has been superseded by
Cataloging Service Bulletin. This change was p r e c i p i t a t e d by the reorganization t h a t t h e Library of Congress i s undergoing. The Processing
Department has become Processing Services, and t h e cataloging data f o r
Cataloging Service i s -therefore obsolete since entry i s under the department. Because a new entry would need t o be prepared, it was decided t o
change the t i t l e t o what, i n essence, the b u l l e t i n has been c a l l e d f o r
years. By changing t h e t i t l e , a new International Standard S e r i a l Number (ISSN) and key t i t l e could a l s o be assigned thus creating a one-toone relationship between e n t r i e s created under the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and. the Guid.elines f o r t h e International S e r i a l s Data Sm-.

Discontinuance of NPAC Coverage of T i t l e s i n Clinical Medicine
I n view of t h e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of t h e National Library of Medicine (NIX) as the national depository of medical publications, t h e Library of Congress a s a matter of policy does not acquire f o r i t s own coll e c t i o n s t i t l e s i n c l i n i c a l medicine. However, t o meet a need of other
American l i b r a r i e s f o r cataloging data f o r medical t i t l e s , t h e Library of
Congress over t e n years ago established with NLM a cooperative cataloging
arrangement whereby the Library regularly borrowed, from NLM any t i t l e s
i n c l i n i c a l medicine f o r which NPAC p a r t i c i p a n t s had requested LC data
and. cataloged. these t i t l e s . When t h i s cooperative e f f o r t was i n i t i a t e d ,
cataloging coverage of medical t i t l e s was generally unavailable through
sources outside t h e Library of Congress.
rc.
Over the l a s t decade cataloging records f o r medical publications have become obtainable from a variety of sources. NLM i s now producing cataloging data in the MARC format and producing tapes t h a t a r e
available on l e a s e from the National Technical Information Service. NLM
records a r e also accessible through OCLC and a r e used by Trinco, a commercial firm based i n San Antonio, Texas, t o produce catalog cards f o r
purchase by medical l i b r a r i e s . The advent of these services has caused
the Library of Congress and the National Library of Medicine t o reassess
the value of t h e i r cooperative cataloging program and t o agree t o i t s
discontinuance. The Library of Congress will no longer produce printed
cards o r machine-readable cataloging f o r t i t l e s i n c l i n i c a l medicine and
w i l l immediately stop accepting reports f o r such t i t l e s from NPAC p a r t i cipants. However, medical t i t l e s , other than those which deal s t r i c t l y
with the c l i n i c a l aspects of medicine, w i l l remain i n scope f o r NPAC
reporting.

I n Cataloging Service, b u l l e t i n 125, the l i s t of revised
Canadian headings includ.ed "Nimbus Films" as the revised headim f o r a
one-file situation. This heading should not have been l i s t e d . a: a l l .
The name Nimbus Productions was changed i n 1972 t o Nimbus Films, and
therefore, there w i l l remain two f i l e s , one under the e a r l i e r name and

SUBJECT HEADINGS
Order of Subject Tracings
The f i r s t subject heading assigned. should normally represent
the actual class number assigned t o the work (the monographic class numb e r f o r analytics of collected sets). I n some cases a combination of
two headings i s needed t o represent the class number, and. these two
should normally be l i s t e d . a s the f i r s t and. second subject headings assigned. Important headings which narrowly miss designating the class
number (such as a special approach t o the major topic, o r the second of
two major topics of the work) should be l i s t e d . next. Finally, headings
add.ed t o elaborate certain aspects, such a s biographical headings, extra
l o c a l history headings, etc., a r e l i s t e d l a s t . I f a work i s being reclassed a t the time the card i s being reprinted, it i s customary t o renumber the tracings t o correspond. t o the new class number assigned.
Parenthetical Q u a l i f i e r s i n Subject Headings
When proposing a term o r phrase as a new topical subject heading, .it may be necessary t o use parenthetical qualifiers to
1 ) specify which definition i s intended i f several
dictionary definitions exist;
2) remove arribiguity i f t h e term o r phrase i s similar i n
construction to other existing o r possible headLngs;
3) make more e x p l i c i t a word o r phrase t h a t i s obscure.
the q u a l i f i e r should name the discipline, although terms d.esignating the particular category of objects involved a r e also used..

See Also References
"In binding related headings together the basic rule i s t h a t
a 'see also ' reference be made from a given subject: 1 ) t o more specific
subjects o r topics comprehend.ed.within it, or t o an application of the
subject; and. 2 ) t o coordinate subjects which suggest themselves a s l i k e l y
t o be of i n t e r e s t t o the user seeking material under the given heading,
because they represent other aspects of the subject, o r a r e closely rel a t e d t o it. "--~aykin's Sub ject Headings, p. 14.
When establishing subject head.ings, make see also references
references
i n accordance with the above guidelines, i.e., provide
from broader headings, and. 2 references t o more specific headings. (EXceptions t o t h i s rule a r e mad.e i n certain special situations, and, these
a r e indicated below.) Such procedures integrate the new heading into the
existing arrangement of the subject heading system. To prevent the existence of "orphan" headings, a t l e a s t one
reference from a broad.er heading i s now mandatory, unless the new heading i s of a type f o r which other
arranganents a r e normally made, such as headings with ethnic qualifiers.

all upward see references of t h i s type. Currently there i s some relaxat i o n of t h i s rule a s long as it appears t o be impracticable t o provide
separate headings f o r each concept.
See references f o r abbreviations of headings a r e normally
not made. For example, the x_ reference AARC i s not made t o the American
Road.Race of Champions. An exception i s made when the concept would gene r a l l y be known only by i t s abbreviation, rather than i t s fill name. However, i n such cases the concept i s normally established under the abbreviated. form, e.g., DDT (1nsecticid.e). As a general rule, see references
