Special Stitches
Bpdc (back post double crochet) = Yarn over,
insert hook from back side of work to front
and to back again around the post of indicated
stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on
hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2
loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2
loops (1 loop on hook). Skip the stitch in front
of the Bpdc.
dc2tog = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch,
yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw
through 2 loops] 2 times, yarn over, draw
through all 3 loops on hook.
Fpdc (Front post double crochet) = Yarn over,
insert hook from front side of work to back
and to front again around post of indicated
stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on
hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2
loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2
loops (1 loop on hook).
reverse sc (reverse single crochet) = Work
single crochet in opposite direction from
which you would usually work (left to right if
you are right-handed and right to left if you
are left-handed). This stitch is also known
as crab stitch. It creates a rope-like twisted
single crochet edging.
Notes
1. Hat is worked in joined rounds with right
side facing. At the end of each round, skip
the beginning chains and join with slip
stitch in the first dc.
2. Cowl is worked back and forth in rows with
post stitches to create a ribbed fabric. First
and last rows are joined to form cowl.
3. Cowl edging is worked in joined rounds
with right side facing.

HAT

With smaller hook and leaving a 5 (12.5 cm)


tail, ch 5; join with slip st in first ch to form a
ring.
Note At end of each round, skip beginning
chains and join with slip st in first dc.

and throughout), 12 dc into ring; join with slip

with slip st in first dc60 dc.
Round 28: Repeat Round 3.
Round 29: Ch 1, reverse sc in each dc around;
join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

With beginning tail, close ring as needed.


Chain Trim (make as many as desired)
With smaller hook, ch 20. Fasten off.
Using photograph as a guide for placement,
pull chain trim through 3 or 4 outermost
ribs and gather tightly. Tie into knot twice to
secure. With beginning and end tails of chain,
knot each end of tie and trim close to knot.
Place chain trim randomly around hat as
desired. Try on during placement as trim may
affect final fit.
Weave in ends.

COWL

With larger hook, ch 41.


Row 1 (right side): Dc in 3rd ch from hook
(beginning ch counts as first dc) and in each
ch across, turn39 dc.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc here and
throughout), Fpdc around next 12 dc, Bpdc
around next 13 dc, Fpdc around last
13 dc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in each dc across, turn.
Rows 421: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 nine times.
Row 22: Ch 2, Bpdc around next 12 dc, Fpdc
around next 13 dc, Bpdc around last
13 dc, turn.
Row 23: Ch 2, dc in each dc across, turn.
Rows 2441: Repeat Rows 22 and
23 nine times.
Rows 4261: Repeat Rows 2-21.
Row 62: Repeat Row 3.
Row 63: Ch 2, Fpdc in each dc across, turn.

Note Take care not to twist piece while joining
first and last rows. Hold ends with wrong sides
together.
Joining Row: Ch 2, working in opposite side of
foundation ch, slip st in first ch of first row, *dc
in next st of last row, slip st in next ch of first
row; repeat from * across. Do not fasten off.

Edging

First side
Round 1 (right side): *Ch 4, skip next row,
working across end of row, sc in next row;
repeat from * around; join with slip st in first
ch of beginning ch.
Round 2: *Ch 5, remove hook from loop, insert
hook from front to back in next ch-4 space,
pick up loop and pull through to right side;
repeat from * around; join with slip st in first
ch of beginning ch. Fasten off.
Second side
Join yarn with slip st in opposite end of joining
row.
Rounds 1 and 2: Work same as Rounds 1 and
2 of first side.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Block piece lightly.
