LOZENGES
It is defined as oral solid dosage form
which is intended to be chewed in
the mouth and not intended to be
swallowed intact.
They are hard so that release is slow.

Definition
Disc, round, oblong, or triangular
solid unit dosageform intended to be
sucked in .
Viscous liquid produced in oral cavity
will remain in contact with affected
area for long time.
Use for treatment of local infection of
mouth and throat.
Drugs used in it are anesthetic,
antitussive antiseptic...

Liquid - glycerin/water
Adhesive (binder)- liquid glucose,
acacia mucilage, tracaganth
mucilage
Flavouring agent - lemon oil

Moulded lozenges
Medicament Powder or solution
mixed with gum mucilage or sugar.
Rolling machine spread the mass
into sheet of even thickness.
Cutting machine cut the mass into
oval or oblong shape.

USE
To temporarily stop coughs
and lubricate and soothe
irritated tissues of the throat
(usually due to a sore
throat), possibly from the
common cold or influenza
Nicotine lozenges are used
to help people stop smoking.

ADVANTAGES:
being easy to administer to pediatric
and geriatric patients.
keeping the drug in contact with the
oral cavity for an extended period of
time.
DISADVANTAGE:
One disadvantage of using a
"gummy-type" lozenge with children is
they may perceive it as candy and not
a serious dosage form.
