Spotlight: Dr. Tuba Yavuz

by Derya Tansel and Beatrice Villanueva

Dr. Tuba Yavuz is an Assistant Professor in

the Electrical and Computer Engineering
(ECE) Department at UF.

Education
Raised in Turkey, Dr. Yavuz went on to
receive a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science
at Bilkent University (located in Ankara,
Turkey) after encouragement from her high
school teachers. She later also received her
Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University
of California, Santa Barbara.
At the beginning of her computer
engineering education, Dr. Yavuz had no
experience with computers or programming.
During her first semester, she struggled with
her programming course, but she didnt let
that discourage her from continuing in
Computer Science. In fact, it bolstered her
eagerness with the realization that she had
learned so much about programming and
had made life-long friends along the way.

Research: Past and Present

The research experience Dr. Yavuz gained
during her time in university made the idea
of being a Professor appealing to her. Later,
as she started teaching some courses, she
realized that becoming a Professor would

allow her to actively pursue her research

interests and then teach them to students,
who would be able to later apply these
concepts to improve the quality of living.
Currently, Dr. Yavuz is conducting research in
the intersection of formal methods and
software engineering. She aims to develop
mathematically sound tool and techniques to
build a path towards developing reliable
systems. Some of her projects involve
automatically checking that there are no
bugs in a program, debugging large scale
Java projects, and detecting malicious
peripherals (in collaboration with Dr. Kevin
Butler).

Dr. Tuba Yavuz

Dr. Yavuz hosts a workshop in Spring that goes
through how to hack the Linux Kernel to empower
students by making programming more engaging
and approachable!

Advice
Some advice that Dr. Yavuz has for current
students is to figure out your strengths and
weaknesses. The pursuit of an Engineering
Career involves knowing what is required of
you, planning well, and working hard. Being
involved in professional organizations (e.g.
SWE, WECE, etc.) will open up opportunities
and help you develop a professional network!
Thanks, Dr. Tuba Yavuz!
