Hawker Group Centre – proposed
improvements and land release
As part of proposals for the potential release of Blocks 8 and 10 Section 34 Hawker,
the Land Development Agnecy (LDA) has been consulting businesses located in the
Hawker Centre regarding options for improving and upgrading the centre.
Shoppers and other interested people are invited to comment on the options for the
Hawker Centre at an information session.
When: Saturday 26 June 2010 (from 10.30am - 1.30pm)
Where: Hawker Centre near the children’s playground at the rear of the TAB. If
inclement weather the session will be held at the Christ Church in Hawker Place.
Interested members of the public are invited to drop-in anytime between the above
hours to view the materials on display and to provide feedback to the LDA staff.
Plans of the proposals for the centre, including a video artist’s impression will be on
display at the information session. Some of these details will be made available at
www.lda.act.gov.au following the information session. The period for comment
closes Monday 12 July 2010.

Have your say about new rules for disability
services
What is happening?
Commonwealth, State and Territory governments want to hear from people about
what rules (standards) should be in place for disability services. This consultation is
currently underway.
These rules will be used by disability service providers all over Australia. Governments
are setting the rules to make sure all people who use disability services have the same
idea about what a good quality service means.
What will the questions be about?
Governments are asking questions about:
• what things the rules for disability service providers should cover;
• what words should be in the rules;
• how to make sure that disability service providers follow the rules; and
• how people with a disability and their family members and carers should give
feedback on how well disability service providers follow the rules.
Who is going to take part?
All different types of people who are interested in disability services are included:
• people with a disability;
• family members and carers;
• staff at disability services;
• staff at advocacy agencies; and
• government staff.
How can people have a say about the rules for disability services?
In the ACT, feedback is being facilitated through the national survey and written
submissions. Your participation is encouraged via either of these avenues.
To assist you Disability ACT has established a project website. The website
contains a link to the national survey and information about how to lodge a
written submission. Information regarding the National Quality Framework
and Information Bulletins are also available. The website address is

Draft Variation No. 302 to the Territory Plan
A review of the Territory Plan by the ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA)
has resulted in proposed changes to the community facility zone, the associated
development table and development code. The variation also proposes rezoning
Belconnen section 87 blocks 12–15.
The draft variation is available at www.actpla.act.gov.au under Consultation on the
home page.
The period for comments closes on Tuesday 22 June 2010.

Seasonal influenza immunisation for children
less than five years of age
Following an investigation into a higher than usual occurrence of fever with
convulsions in young children after seasonal influenza immunisation Australia’s Chief
Medical Officer, Professor Jim Bishop, has advised the following.
Healthy children aged less than five years
As a precaution the suspension of seasonal influenza vaccine for healthy children
aged less than five years should continue. Healthy children under five years are less
at risk of severe illness and hospitalisation from complications of flu. This group is
recommended to receive the free H1N1 influenza vaccine Panvax®, which has been
found to be safe and effective in preventing swine flu. Swine flu is the predominant
circulating flu strain so far this year.
Children aged less than five years with underlying medical conditions
Parents of children with medical conditions should discuss the risks and benefits of
immunisation with seasonal influenza vaccine with their general practitioner (GP).
These children are at risk of severe illness and your GP can advise if immunisation with
seasonal influenza vaccine would be the best option.

Direct land sale applications at Holt and Lyons
Shops
Applications have been received for the direct sale of small parcels of vacant territory
land adjacent to existing leases to allow for:
• an expansion of the existing IGA supermarket at Holt; and
• a redevelopment of commercial leases for office accommodation and underground
parking at the Lyons shops.

Workers Compensation Insurance – an obligation
not an option
Did you know that employers are responsible for protecting their workers, including
contractors, against the consequences of a work-related injury by maintaining workers’
compensation insurance? Ensuring that you have the necessary workers’ compensation
insurance is an obligation of doing business in the Territory. The protection of workers is not
optional.
Changes to the ACT Workers’ Compensation Act 1951 come into effect on 1 July 2010 and
give greater clarity to the broad definition of ‘worker’.
If an individual on a worksite, for example in a café, at a retail shop, or commercial cleaning
company supplies labour only, then without a doubt they are a worker, regardless of
whether they have an ABN. These workers must be protected by their employers.
Employers who do not meet their workers’ compensation obligations will be fined up to
double the avoided premium.
