EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH SCHOOLS ARE PREPARED FOR AN

EMERGENCY
The East Baton Rouge Parish School System partners
with local law enforcement, public safety, mental health
agencies, and the Mayors Office of Homeland Security and
Emergency Preparedness to prepare for emergency
conditions in our schools.
The district and each school has developed and
implemented a comprehensive plan for responding to
a variety of natural disasters and hazardous situations
including weather, fire, bomb threats, and hazardous

material incidents. Staff and students practice appropriate

responses including evacuation and shelter-in-place.
The district Emergency Operations Plan and all specific school
plans, are modeled on the National Incident Management
System (NIMS), developed by the United States Department
of Homeland Security. Our system for managing school
emergency situations provide students, staff and parents
with a plan and a sense of security. Student and staff safety
is our focus and guides our decisions.

HOW DO WE PREPARE STUDENTS AND STAFF TO HANDLE EMERGENCIES

IN EBRPSS?

Emergency Operations Plans are in place at each

building.
The staff at all schools has received NIMS training on
how to respond to an emergency until the arrival of
the professional first-response agencies.
Each school has an Emergency Response Team
Each school has a trained I CARE Specialist to provivde
support to students, families and staff during recovery.
The Emergency Operations Plan addresses the needs
of students with disabilities as well as students for
whom English is not their native language (ESL).

EMERGENCY MEASURES
Shelter-In-Place Procedures: A short-term solution to
a short-term problem. May be used in the event of a
hazardous materials incident, chemical spill or terrorist
action.
Lockdown and Modified Lockdown: Local law enforcement
agencies may alert schools to potential risks requiring the
school to implement this precautionary safety protocol.
May be used for an intruder, or dangerous activity
occurring outside the school building. Modified lockdown
takes similar precautions but allows more movement
within the building. To ensure safety, no one may enter or
leave the building. Students will not be released to their
parents during a lockdown.
Evacuation: Students and staff are removed from school
when conditions outside are safer than inside. May be
used for fire or unsafe building conditions.
Reverse Evacuation: Students and staff are moved quickly

indoors from outside for personal safety. May be used for

severe weather, chemical spills, or danger to personal safety.

HOW FAMILIES CAN HELP

Be patient we will communicate with you as

quickly as possible.
Check the EBRPSS Web site, the Red Stick Ready
Web site, and listen to local radio and/or television
stations.
Please dont call the school; it jams the phone lines.
Be patient your childs safety is our first priority!

During an emergency, please do not go to the school

site. Traffic will make it difficult for emergency response
teams.
Keep parent contact information, with correct phone
numbers and names of people authorized to pick up
your children, current at your childs school.
All adults who are picking up children should remember
to always bring photo identification.

Pandemic Flu: Part of preparedness is maintaining overallgood health and using basic prevention measures such as
covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
and washing your hands often. In the event of a pandemic flu
event the District will comply with instructions issued by the
East Baton Rouge Parish Office of Public Health Department.

Relocation Centers

Unscheduled School Closures: May occur due to weather,

natural disaster, Homeland Security Advisory, or school
emergencies. Access web page or listen to local radio/
television for updates.

Busses will transport students to their designated Secondary Site. This site may be another school or may be
a community facility. If needed, parents will be able to
pick up students at this Secondary Site location.

Each school is assigned to another site where they may

be relocated in the event their primary relocation site
is not available or if their primary evacuation site is too
close to the emergency event.

Please check the news media or the districts web site
