Introduction to Computer Software

Computer software, or simply software, also known as computer programs, is the non-tangible
component of computers. Computer software contrasts with computer hardware, which is the physical
component of computers. Computer hardware and software require each other and neither can be
realistically used without the other.
Operating System
The operating system is a special type of program that loads automatically when you start your computer.
The operating system allows you to use the advanced features of a modern computer without having to
learn all the details of how the hardware works.
Programming Languages
A vocabulary and set of grammatical rules for instructing a computer to perform specific tasks. The term
programming language usually refers to high-level languages, such as BASIC, C, C++, COBOL,
FORTRAN, Ada, and Pascal. Each language has a unique set of keywords (words that it understands) and
a special syntax for organizing program instructions.
Introduction to DBMS
A Database Management System (DBMS) is a set of programs that manages any number of databases.
A DBMS is responsible for:
accessing data
inserting, updating, and deleting data
security
integrity, facilitated by:
o

locking

logging

application-defined rules, including triggers

supporting batch and on-line programs

facilitating backups and recoveries
optimizing performance
maximizing availability
maintaining the catalog and directory of database objects

managing the buffer pools

acting as an interface to other systems programs
supporting user interface packages, such as the popular SQL interface for relational database
systems
Introduction to Telecommunications
Communication is a process in which information is transferred from source to destination. Information
can be in any form e.g. Voice, Data, Video, Graphics etc. Voice communication is the simplest mode of
communication. People also use facial expressions and body language to communicate with each other.

We have been using communication technology for years. Communications, or telecommunication,

technology consists of electromagnetic devices and systems for communicating over long distance. The
principle examples are telephone, radio, television, and cable. Before 1950s computer technology and
communications technology developed independently, like rails in a railroad track that never merge. Since
then, however they have gradually fused together, producing a new information environment.
Computer Network
A computer network is a group of interconnected computers. Networks may be classified according to a
wide variety of characteristics. This article provides a general overview of some types and categories and
presents the basic components of a network.
Internet and WWW
The INTERNET is a worldwide network of computers all connected to each other by telephone lines,
cables and satellites. Its like a huge library of information.
The WWW stands for World Wide Web. Most websites have this at the beginning.
E-commerce
Ecommerce (or electric commerce) refers to the buying and selling of goods and services via electronic
channels, primarily the Internet. Online retail is decidedly convenient due to its 24-hour availability,
global reach, and generally efficient customer service.
Introduction to Multimedia
Multimedia means that computer information can be represented through audio,
video, and animation in addition to traditional media (i.e., text, graphics/drawings,
and images).
Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer controlled integration of text,
graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any

other media where every type of information can be represented, stored,

transmitted and processed digitally.
