Unit Overview
Preview your notebook (look at the topics, aims, key points/vocabulary, etc.). Using complete
sentences write a paragraph or two, summarizing what you already know about these topics.
Now think about what you are going to learn this unit. Write down 3 questions that you have
about this unit. You will be answering these questions during our end of unit summary.

Additional Thoughts:
Unit Task
To celebrate how hard everyone is working, we are planning on a class party in math
class! No class party is complete without yummy food. You will be given a budget for
the party and a list of items to purchase. To ensure that we are getting the best deal on
everything that we are buying, and are able to buy everything on the list, you will have
to use your knowledge of unit rate to compare prices from different stores. Using unit
rate to help you plan this party will help you to become a savvier shopper; a skill that
can save you a lot of money throughout your life!
Happy Planning!

Ratios

2)
A
rate
is
a
quantity
that
describes
a
ratio
relationship
between
two
types
of
quantities.
For
example,
15
miles
per
hour
is
a
rate
that
describes
a
ratio
relationship
between
hours
and
miles.
If
an
object
is
traveling
at
a
constant
15
miles/hour,
then
after
one
hour
it
has
gone

after
2
miles
it
has
gone

after
3

the

But
that's

the

buying

Sometimes,
instead

stores
impose
a
so-called
quantity

for
certain

some
supermarkets,
as
much
as
25
percent
of

are
a
poorer

in

We
found
several
examples
during
a
recent
visit
to
a
New

Target
store.
For
instance,
a
40-ounce
jar
of
Market

peanut
butter
had
a
unit
price
$2.26
per
pound,
9
cents
per
pound
more
than
the
18-ounce
size.
A
150-fluid-
ounce
jug
of
Up&Up
laundry
detergent
had
a
unit
price
of
$2.86
per
quart,
about
5
cents
more
per
quart
than
the
100-
fluid-ounce
jug.
And
the
$4.12
per
pound
unit
price
for
a
12-ounce
can
of
StarKist
tuna
was
a
whopping
54
cents
per
pound
more
expensive
than
the
5-ounce
one.
How

understanding

you

that

Aim:
How
can
we
solve
constant
rate
work
problems
by
calculating
and
comparing
unit
rates?
Do
Now!
Vocabulary/Key
Points!
1)
If
work
is
being
done
at
a
constant
rate
by
one
person,
and
at
a
different
constant
rate
by
another
person,
both
rates
can
be
converted
to
their
unit
rates
and
then
compared
directly.
2)
Work
can
include
jobs
done
in
a
certain
time
period,
rates
of
running
or
swimming,
etc.
3)
Rate
is
a
very
important
type
of
ratio,
used
in
many
everyday
problems,
such
as
grocery
shopping,
traveling,
medicine--in
fact,
almost
every
activity
involves
some
type
of
rate.
Miles
per
hour
or
feet
per
second
are
both
rates
of
speed.
Number

you
