A Note From Your Board

welcome 2016 and the opportunities it will provide us to enhance our living environment

Dear Homeowner,
Fall-or at least what passes for it here in Bakersfield- is coming upon us. It is a wonderful time of the
year here, and is a time to reflect, and be thankful for all we have. I feel very fortunate to live in our
great country, and in our great community, The Greens.
With the season changing, it is a good time to be reminded of some of our responsibilities as residents
of the Greens, and what we can do to insure our great community remains the Premier Active Adult
Community in Bakersfield.
One of the reasons Sandy and I moved here was because of the beauty in The Greens. The drought has
changed the way we must use water to keep our community green and beautiful, and many say this
shortage will soon become the new normal. With that in mind, I reviewed, on the California Water
Service website, exactly what are our restrictions on water use in the current year. California Water
Service, under the auspices of the City of Bakersfield, provides water to The Greens. This web site
states in part: The State Water Resources Control Board has extended its mandatory water-use reductions and restrictions through January 2017, but allowed water suppliers to self-certify their reductions
based on local water supply conditions over the next three years.
There is much more written on the web site, and you can read this at your leisure. However to me, the
most important sentence reads Prohibited uses of water, water waste and irrigation schedules all remain in effect. The irrigation schedule referred to is: Residences whose house number ends in an
even number are only allowed to irrigate on Wednesdays, Fridays or Sundays. Those residences
whose house number ends in an odd number are only allowed to irrigate on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. No irrigation is allowed on Mondays.
Another reason we moved here was knowing that the value of our homes, our choice of The Greens
lifestyle, and our peace of mind was being protected by the CC&Rs. It is important that each resident
know and follow the CC&Rs. Please know your board is committed to ensuring that our CC&Rs will
serve their purpose in protecting the integrity of our fine community.
Another reason we moved here was the security provided by a gated community, caring neighbors and
24 hour security. I urge you to please call Trans West Security at 661-381-2900 for any security issues. By being vigilant and utilizing our security services we can help insure The Greens is a safe
place to call home.
Finally, in a security related issue, please know that the gate codes on all entry gates will be changed
in early 2017. All residents will be notified of the new codes and date the new codes go into effect
sometime early in 2017. It was decided to not change the gate codes until after The Holidays, so that
those residents having parties or guests would not have to notify any one of new gate codes. However,
please be reminded that when the new gate codes go into effect it is our own individual responsibility
to notify our gardeners etc., of the new gate codes.
In closing, since this will be the last newsletter before Thanksgiving, on behalf of your Greens HOA
Board, I wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the Holiday with family and friends. We all
have much to be thankful for !!

WE ARE GETTING READY FOR THE WINTER. THIS IS THE PLAN AT

THIS POINT, BUT WITH WARM WEATHER STILL HERE IT COULD
CHANGE.
(Gary Skaggs-Committee Chair of the Grounds and Pools)
Pools and Spa's
The Pools will be closed on November 14th. and the Spas will go to the winter schedule of 8am.
until 8pm every day. This is the longest I remember having pools open, but I can tell we still
have swimmers, which is great, so keep swimming. Once you see the pool sweeps in the pool,
please do not swim. If the City checks on us and finds someone using the pool with skimmers in
they will shut down both the pool and spa.
Lawns and flowers
Penney should have taken out the summer flowers and treated the soil for the winter stock. Usually the flower beds are treated to kill the worms and improve the soil for around two weeks
prior to replanting. Our flowers have been kept very well through the hot summer, thanks to
Penny Landscape. It has been my goal to keep the Greens as the best looking community in
Seven Oaks.
Association Trees
Currently the Board is looking at proposals to trim the Pistache trees. In the past we have maintained our trees to meet City requirements. But with the hot summer the trees grew so much that
they are pulling down the older branches and damaging the tree foundation. In addition the new
trash trucks are taller and breaking limbs as they pick up trash.
We are also seeing more and more sidewalks being raised, breaking sprinklers and irrigation
lines. Basically what has happened is the roots did not go down because of our clay soil and the
slope of the lawns which allow a lot of water to run off directly to the trees. Our trees are now a
very costly asset and the Board is studying what we have to do.
I do a trip hazard review every quarter and I usually find between 10 and 15 sidewalk trip
hazards, which is a rise of 1/2 inch at a joint. You can see my marks in red and those areas will
be ground until the tree has to be taken out. The roots get unbelievably large and will fill the
strip area around the tree.
I hope you pool users had a great summer. Atlas has done a great job keeping the pools operating and clean. Our equipment is getting old but they keep it running.

The Mens Club meeting will be

November 9th at the White Oak Clubhouse.
The Speaker is scheduled to be Hall Ambulance Service.

The Club will, again

this year, participate in the Marine Corps Reserves Christmas program Toys for Tots.
The meeting will commence at 4:30 pm
with a social gathering and refreshments.

SOGGY BUSINESS:
The SOGGys Commodores Cup golf tournament will be held on Wednesday, November
2nd @ 9:00 am at the Seven Oaks Country Club. The dinner will be held at Seven Oaks. It
will start at 5:30 with dinner at 6:00 oclock. Those SOGGYs interested in playing the tournament and/or dinner should contact Buddy Devoti (663-3322) or Andy Reis ((663-7478).

GUEST SPEAKER:
The guest speaker was Edwina Tripp of the Bakersfield Police Community Relations Department. Her valuable presentation was on protecting our homes. She stressed the first
line of defense, which is to know your neighborhood. Be aware of people and vehicles foreign to your area. Another deterrent is lots of light at night, around the house, in the house,
when youre home and especially when you are away.
She announced that Community Relations will provide a free inspection of your home to
determine its vulnerability.

NEXTMEETING:
There will be no meeting in November. The next meeting will be December 5 th.
The SOGGY is the Greens mens Golf Association.
