2) Answer all questions.

SECTION

1. A survey has found that the number of television per household has
cumulative probability distribution given by:

F(x)

1
0.0

2
0.4

3
0.8

4
0.9

5
1.0

a) Compute the mean and standard deviation.

b) A local television station is running a promotion for families with more
than two televisions in their home. The station pays RM 75 if a family
has 3 televisions, RM 150 if a family has 4 televisions and RM 250 if a

2. Kobe Bryant is an eighty percent free-throw shooter. In a game against the

Portland Trailblazers, Kobe went to the foul line twelve times. Let M donate
the number of free throws that Kobe makes. Assume his shots are
independent. Calculate the probabilty distribution, E[M], and Var[M]. What
is the probability that Kobe misses more than two shots?

3. A botanist decides to count the number of daisies, x, in each of 80
randomly selected squares within the field. The results are summarised
below.

x 295

x 2 1386

a) Calculate the mean and the variance of the number of daisies per
square for the 90 squares. Give your answers to 2 decimal places.

b) Using your mean from part (a), estimate the probability that exactly 4
daisies will be found in a randomly selected square.

4. A test has been devised to measure a students level of motivation during

high school. The motivation scores on this test are approximately normally
distributed with a mean of 25 and a standard deviation of 6. The higher the
score, the greater the motivation to do well in a school.
a) What percentage of students taking this test will have scores below 10?
b) John is told that 35% of the students taking the test have higher
motivation scores than he does. What was Johns score?

5. There is a football game where Penn State is playing Notre Dome. Since
the game is a home game, we suppose that 80% of the fans attending the
game are Penn State fans. We want to choose three fans randomly, identify
whether the fan is a Penn State fan (P) or a Notre Dame fan (N). List the
set of sample set and the possible number of Penn State fans choosen
either 0, 1, 2 or 3.
