NATIONAL BRAVERY AWARD WINNERS 2014

Zeal Jitendra Marathe


This 13-year old girl from Vadodara,
Gujarat showed exemplary courage and
presence of mind when her school bus
lost control and kids started falling out.
She managed to come out of the bus
safely through a window, saved a few
kids and also called the ambulance and
the police using her teachers phone.
With her prompt actions, she managed
to keep many kids conscious and even
called their parents.

G Tooldev Sharma
This 9-year old boy from Manipur, who
did not know swimming, jumped into a
six feet deep pond without thinking twice
to save the life of a 3-year old kid. When
he reached the drowning kid, he held
his collar with one hand and took
support of a bamboo stick with another,
while calling for help.

Ripa Das
When a fire broke out in her
neighbourhood, 7-year old Ripa from
Tripura showed great courage and
saved the life of her one year old
brother. While her mother and
grandmother panicked and left the
house, she did not lose her cool and
with immense presence of mind,
managed to save her life along with her
brothers. She is also the youngest
recipient of the award this year.

Shivampet
Ruchitha, Telangana
8-year-old Shivampet Ruchitha became
the youngest person to receive the
award this year. On July 24, 2014,
Ruchita saved two of her school mates
when a train hit their school bus. She
noticed that their bus had stopped on a
railway track and a train was coming
towards them. Showing extraordinary
presence of mind, she pushed two
students out of the window and jumped
off the bus herself too. Unfortunately,
she could not save her younger sister
who was sitting in the front row. Her
younger brother sustained severe
injuries, but he has recovered now. 16
students, the driver, and the conductor
lost their lives in that accident. She was
honoured with the Geeta Chopra award.

Arjun Singh, Uttarakhand


In July 2014, a tiger entered 16-year-old
Arjun Singhs house in Uttarakhand. He
showed extreme courage and fought it
off, saving his mothers life who had
fainted as soon as the tiger entered.
Arjun went into a room and picked up a
sickle to fight the tiger. As it was too
small to hit from a distance, Arjun
grabbed a stick and waved it towards
the tiger. He did not stop until the
villagers reached there and the animal
ran away on seeing the crowd.

About National Bravery Awards


These Awards have a very interesting History. On 2 October 1957, Indias
first Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was watching a performance at
Delhis Ramlila ground, at the Red Fort, and a fire broke out in a shamiana)
through a short circuit.

A 14 Year Kid named Harish Chandra, took out his knife, and ripped open
the burning tent, saving lives of hundreds of trapped people; this incident
inspired Pt. Nehru initiate the awards, he asked the authorities to constitute
an award to honour brave children from all over the country. Harish was the
First ever Recipient of the Award. Subsequently several others awards were
added to the list.

These are usually given 2-3 days before the Republic Day every Year.

The various categories of awards are as under:


I. Geeta and Sanjay Chopra Awards instituted in 1978 after two children
Geeta and Sanjay Chopra exemplified great courage and lost their lives in
the process. The Awardees receive a cash award of Rs. 40,000/-.
II. Bharat Award instituted in 1987-88. This award is given for an
exceptionally outstanding act of courage performed by the child. The
Awardees receive a cash award of Rs. 50,000/-.
III. Bapu

Gaidhani

Award instituted

in

1988-89,

to

honour

Bapu

Gaidhanis act of courage and bravery in an incident where he saved several

lives including those of animals from a fire in Nasik. The Awardees receive
Rs.30,000/- each.

Bharat Awards
Bharat Award has been conferred on 8 year old Kumari Mahika Gupta of Delhi
who saved her brother from floods at Kedarnath (Uttarakhand).
Geeta Chopra Award
The Geeta Chopra Award has been conferred to 16 year old Kumari Maleka Singh
Tak of Rajasthan who displayed rare grit and determination in fighting off her
molesters.
Sanjay Chopra Award
The Sanjay Chopra Award has been given to 17 year old Master Shubam Santosh
Chaudari of Maharashtra who saved two children when their school van caught fire.
Bapu Gaidhani Awards
1. Master Sanjay Navasu Sutar (17 years) of Maharashtra
Reason: Outstanding bravery in fighting Leopard.
2. Master Akshay Jairam Roj (13 years) of Maharashtra
Reason: Outstanding bravery in fighting Leopard
3. Late Kum. Mausmi Kashyap (11 years) of Uttar Pradesh
Reason: Sacrificed her life in trying to save a girl from drowning. She has been
given the award posthumously.
4. Late Master Aryan Raj Shukla (14 years) of Uttar Pradesh
Reason: Sacrificed his life in saving five lives by his sense of duty and heroic action.
He has been given award posthumously.
General Awards
The Recipients of General Bravery Awards 2014 are,
1.

Kumari Shilpa Sharma (Himachal Pradesh): She displayed indomitable


courage saved her brothers life from the attack of the Leopard.

2.

Master Sagar Kashyap (New Delhi): For displaying extraordinary courage in


saving three lives.

3.

Master Abhishek Ekka (Chhattisgarh): Saved his friends life from drowning in
a 40 feet deep well.

4.

Master S.S. Manoj (Karnataka): He is a 12 year old boy who showed


extraordinary courage by saving the life of a 42 years old physically disabled
lady.

5.

Master Subin Mathew (Kerala): Subin Mathew, Akhil Biju and Yadhukrishnan
V.S. saved a life with their brave act.

6.

Master Akhil Biju (Kerala): Subin Mathew, Akhil Biju and Yadhukrishnan V.S.
saved a life with their brave act.

7.

Master Yadhukrishnan V. S. (Kerala): Subin Mathew, Akhil Biju and


Yadhukrishnan V.S. saved a life with their brave act.

8.

Master Saurabh Chandel (Madhya Pradesh): His gallant act saved two lives.

9.

Kumari Tanvi Nandkumar Ovhal(Maharashtra): She has been awarded for


saving her sisters life by her act of courage.

10. Master Rohit Ravi Janmanchi (Maharashtra): His courageous and prompt
action thus saved a girls life from 6 feet deep and 12 feet wide drain.
11. Master Kangleinganba Kshetrimayum (Manipur): His daring act saved two
lives.
12. Kumari Kharibam Gunichand Devi (Manipur): She saved her cousins life from
drowning.
13. Late Master M. Khayingthei (Manipur): He displayed exemplary courage in
rescuing his friend. He has been given award posthumously.
14. Master Vanlalhruaia (Mizoram): He saved the life of his friend from drowning.
15. Kumari Remlalhruaitluangi(Mizoram):
16. Late Kumari Malsawmtluangi (Mizoram): She displayed rare courage in
saving several lives from drowning. Malsawmtluangi jumped into the water
despite knowing swimming and lost her life in the process. She has been given
award posthumously.
17. Kumari Hani Ngurdinthari (Mizoram): She along with Malsawmtluangi
displayed rare courage in saving several lives from drowning.
18. Late Master L. Manio Chachei (Nagaland): He displayed exemplary valour and
sacrificing his life in trying to save his friends. He has been given award
posthumously.
