1.0 PURPOSE
This document is prepared for having a better understanding on how IBM
DS8300 Storage Works. This will help the new people who are in learning
stage and are working on IBM DS8300 Storage.
2.0 SCOPE
The scope of the document is to provide the readers about the following:
1. How to create a host in IBM DS8300 Storage?
2. How to create a volume group in IBM DS8300 Storage?
<<Working
Once you login to the IBM DS8300 Storage then perform the following
action to create a host:
Click on Host Connections under manage hardware tab to get the
above screen. First check whether the host which you are creating is
<<Working
After clicking on make new host connection you will get the above
screen where you can enter the host name and port type along with
the type of host or OS. After that you can add the WWNs manually or
you can select from the drop down menu and add the WWNs. Once
completing the above steps then click on next.
<<Working
<<Working
In this step you can map the host with a VG or you can do it later also
depending on your requirement and urgency. You will have above three
options and whichever is best applicable to you then select it click on
next.
<<Working
In this step you can assign an I/O port with above two options. You can
either select automatic or go for a manual selection and assign an I/O
port of your wish for the host you are going to create. Click next.
<<Working
In the final step review and check the details whatever you entered to
create a host are correct or not. Once you are done with your attributes
verification then click on finish to create a new host.
10
<<Working
After host is created then click on Volume Groups option under Open
Systems tab which will get you to above page and lists all the existing
volume groups in IBM DS8300 Storage.
To create a new VG click on the drop-down option of select action tab
shown in above page and select create option from the list of options
given.
11
<<Working
In this step define the attributes for your new VG which you are going
to create such as VG name, host type and here you have an additional
option of assigning a volume to this VG at the time of creating a VG if
you wish to.
If you dont want to assign an existing volume then just uncheck the
volumes given below and just click on next.
12
<<Working
Final step in creating a new VG will ask you to cross check the
attributes you have defined for your VG. If you are OK with your
verification click finish or click back to go to previous steps and make
changes if anything is wrong and get it corrected.
13
<<Working
Now you have created a Host and VG. Next step is to map the host
with new VG you have created. In order to map your host you have to
come back to your host connections page by selecting it under manage
hardware tab.
14
<<Working
In this step select the host you have created which will list you its
WWN numbers as shown above. Click on the WWN numbers as well
and from the drop-down option of select action tab click on Add to VG
option which will take you to the next step as shown in next page.
15
<<Working
In this step select the VG to which you want to Map your host and click
next.
16
<<Working
Here you can define the I/O ports either manually or check-mark the
automatic option and click next.
17
<<Working
Verify the above information about your new host which is mapped
with a VG which you have created. If you are done with your reviews
then just click finish to complete the mapping of your host with VG
successfully.
18
<<Working
After you create both host, VG and successfully map them together
then next step is to create LUN or Volume and assign it to the created
Host/VG.
To create a LUN select the Volumes-Open Systems option under open
systems tab which will bring you to the screen as shown above. In the
above page select the storage image, secondary filter and select the
volume group in which you want to create your LUN and then from
drop-down of select action tab click on create option which will take
you to the next step shown below.
19
<<Working
In this step select the extent pool to create LUN/Volume of your desired
capacity from the list of available extent pools where free space is
available and click next.
*Important thing to note here is while creating multiple LUNs. Make
sure that you create them from different extent pools and server for a

better performance and which is the best practice for creating LUN in
IBM DS8300 Storage.
21
<<Working
Then select the VG in which you want to create the LUN/Volume and
click next.
22
<<Working
In this step define your volume properties such as quantity, size you
wish to create and check-mark the box LSSs for volumes as shown
above and select the LSS number from drop-down option and click
next.
*Selecting an LSS number is very important if you are going to create
more LUNs because LSS number you select will be the LUN ID of your
LUN and it will start with the LSS number you select in this page.
23
<<Working
In this step enter the volume name for your easy understanding and as
per your convenience. If you are going to create multiple LUNs then
enter the suffix for this LUN as per the requirement and click next.
24
<<Working
In the last step review and check attributes of your LUN and confirm
the details before clicking finish. If there is anything needs to be
changed then click back button which will take you to the previous
page to make changes. Once verified then click finish to create a
volume under your specified VG which is mapped to the host created
by you.
25
<<Working
After you click finish it will take 1 or 2 minutes to create your LUN and
then you will see the above screen which confirms that a new volume
has been created successfully.
