CHAPTER I
Title : The pattern (appearance) of the raincoat has its own role
1.1 Background
In this global era, so many kind of businesses running. The business itself use
so many function to fight for competitor (Green, W. Little, G. Kamat, Oketch, Vickers
(2007). This case is related with product development role, that product development
can show the product position, influence to financial, age of product and other. As we
know the product development is about make something product which is have
something new than before and, from the product itself, there is any new benefit and
additional function that have positive side.
In product development life cycle there are many kind of step, such as
Launching, Growth, Maturity, Decline. (LUXINNOVATION, 2008) that we should to
know the profit, income or anything that influence the increase market acceptance, to
get improvement.

When we see the picture of new product development life cycle, it shows that
Growth position of the product have the role of finance (Wenwen, Zhibin 2012).
Based on previous research, notes that after a rigorous validation process, the analysis
tests whether New Product Creativity (NPC) affects financial and market
performances in the eastern context of Malaysia.
So the consumer can improve the quality itself, decrease the risk and, increase
the market.In addition of New Product Development (Business Wire 2001). It is
therefore not surprising that the Marketing Science Institute has listed integrating
consumers into the innovation process or cocreation as one of their top research
priorities for 20082010. In addition the related research used customer as the
ingridients of consideration to keep the product survive in market. So based on general
explanation about product development and compare with previous research from the
financial and is unstable or dynamic. And if review with NPD research, 1 kind of
control that could be handle the Unstable or dynamics is costumer itself. In this

problem the product of raincoat in position of decline (based on graph), and it still
survive because of the raincoat itself just still needed.
Hence, this study makes several contribution to the literature by add another
innovation, such as pattern that apply on raincoat. And QFD (Quality Function
Development), which translates the customer needs into a form of attributes that are
adjusted with technical characteristics. QFD is a systematic matrix, describes the
approach that being done to design a high quality product. The basic of QFD is the
philosophy of TQM (Total Quality Management). In QFD using a matrix that called as
House Of Quality, where this matrix is able to translate the customer needs in the
design characteristics, then the Quality Function Development is not only method that
use for this research, another method are Taguchi Method. It will use because Taguchi
Method refers more to the Quality evethough Taguchi Method itself include in
philosophy of TQM (Total Quality Management). That is method robust designs to
serve under adverse condition, and Taguchi emphasized that quality was achieved by
consistently meeting the design specifications, it is a consideration why the methods
are combined in this study. This paper observe about profit of interesting appearance
or pattern of the product itself (raincoat product) by using Quality Function
Development (QFD) Method and Taguchi Method.

2.1

Previous Research

At this literature review, some previous journals will be used to support the paper. The
journals are elaborated as below:
a. Research with title Vaidating new product creativity in the eastern of
Malaysia by Pelin Bicen, Suzilawati Kamarudin, William H.A. Johnson,
Elsevier, (2014).
1. After a rigorous validation process, the analysis tests whether New Product
Creativity (NPC) affects financial and market performances in the eastern

b. Research with title Consumer Cocreation in New Product Development by
Wayne D. Hoyer, Rajesh Chandy, Matilda Dorotic, Manfred Krafft, and
Siddharth S. Singh, Sage London Business School, 2010. j
1. This research elaborates about that the consumer give influence to New
Product Development (NPD), especially for consumer cocreation topic. The
type of that effect is can improve product quality, reduce risk, and increase
market acceptance (hoyer, Chandy, Dorotic, Krafft, Singh (2010)
c. Research with title Cross-Functional Product Development Teams,
Creativity, abd the Innovativeness of New Consumer Products by Sethi.
Rajesh, C. Smith. Daniel, Whan Park.C, Marketing Research, 2001.
1. This research explain about as noted previously, a primary determinant of new
product success is the extent to which the product is different from competing
alternatives in a way that is valued by customers. This notion of meaningful
uniqueness provides the foundation for our definition of new product
innovativeness and is consistent with several branches of literature that use
the term.
2. Research on creativity and the creative process provides the starting point for
identifying specific variables likely to affect new product innovativeness.

3. After a rigorous validation process, the analysis tests whether New Product

2.2 Objective and Scope:


The objective of this research is to know the effect of product development
itself by pattern (appearance). In this research, there is a main research question:
1. Why pattern can influence the profit?
2. Is that pattern one kind of innovation?
2.3 Benefits of The Study:
This study may bring some benefits:
a. For researcher
- Can be used the knowledge as the further research by researcher.
b. For industry or business
- Can be used make it as a base for fracing global business
- Help understanding to know more deeper about the product development
itself
