MEIRE GROVE Placed around
Virginia and John Nathes home, on
the south side of Meire Grove, are lit
Christmas displays, easily visible from
Highway 4 that passes through town.
I like it simple, Virginia said.
The Nativity set was the first thing we
had. Its just the Holy Family.
The Nativity set is situated near the
house. It was part of their display when
they lived on the farm, just east of
town, and came with them when they
moved to Meire Grove 10 years ago.
We did a little bit on the farm,
Virginia said. But it seems like we
added a little more each year in town.
On the farm, it was just us who saw it.
The display now features a blow-up
Santa Claus, a decorated snow fence,

lights highlighting trees and bushes
and wire statues outlining reindeer and
other objects.
We used to have icicles hanging
from the roof, but they didnt always
work, so we didnt put them up, Virginia said.
That wasnt the only change in the
10 years they have put up the display.
This year we have more LED
lights, John said. They are pretty
bright and dont use as much power.
The Nathes have learned putting up
their Christmas displays in mid-fall is
best.
Its fun to put them up on a warm
day, Virginia said. But if its freezing
and your fingers are cold, it takes the
fun out of it.

Even with this falls warm weather,
it was November by the time the Nathes made time to put up their decorations.
It seems like when its nice out
you have 101 other things to do, John
said.
Its not just lights that get hung
outside. Large Christmas ornaments,
wreaths, garland and other decorations
are visible.
I like something that looks good
during the day, too, Virginia said.
Wreaths and greenery look nice. If
you have just a lot of lights, it only
looks nice at night.
Their display is turned on during
Thanksgiving night. Virginia admits
she likes a little snow on the ground.
She got her wish this Nov. 30. The
lights will remain on nightly until Jan.
6, the Feast of the Epiphany.
Timers control when some lights
come on and off. Other lights turn on
as the sunlight weans.
If its cloudy, they turn on sooner,
John said.
The Nathes display had a fan who

waited for the lights to come on. A little
girl living near the display waited each
night for the lights to shine. Her favorite part was when the blow-up Santa
Claus rose from the ground. One year,
the Nathes switched to a dusk-to-dawn
timer with the Santa Claus, instead of a
specific timer, which the girl noticed.
She watched every night at 5 p.m.,
but when we put it on a dusk timer she
said, Santas not getting up, John
said.
The Nathes like to view other displays for possible ideas. Virginia liked
the idea of some A-frame trees she recently saw. John has considered a Santa
Claus climbing up the side of the house
or on the roof.
Just how long the Nathes will
continue putting up the display is not
known. The display is something they
enjoy constructing for others to see.
If you dont enjoy it, you wouldnt
do it, Virginia said. I like the color it
brings.

air is blown into it.

and Virginia Nathe have created an attractive
lighting display for the Christmas season.

cup butter
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
2 whole eggs
1 whole egg yolk
2-1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp aniseed, crushed or 1/4 tsp anise extract

1 tbsp finely shredded orange peel
cup dried cherries
1/2 cup chopped mixed candied fruit
1 whole egg white
1 tsp water
In a large mixing bowl beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed about 30 seconds or until softened.
Add 1 cup of the flour to the margarine. Then add the 1 cup sugar, whole eggs, egg yolk, baking powder, and aniseed or
anise extract. Beat till thoroughly combined, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. Beat or stir in the remaining flour
and orange peel. Stir in candied fruits. Divide dough in half. Preheat oven to 375.
Shape each portion into an 11x2x1-inch loaf. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Combine egg white and water. Brush
mixture over loaves. Sprinkle with the 1 tbsp sugar. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or till lightly browned. Cool loaves on cookie
sheet for 1 hour. Cut each loaf diagonally into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Lay slices, cut side down, on the ungreased cookie sheet.

Hello, its me again Easton Hollenkamp. I love
the toys you brought me last year, and dont
worry they are not just sitting in a closet collecting dust - I still play with them all the time.
I have tried to be really careful with all of them
and make sure they are put away in the right
spot when I am not playing with them. How
are all the elves and reindeer doing? We made
reindeer food in school again so tell them to
look for it by the snow pile in the front yard
(if the snow is still here when you come). If Elf
Pickles has told you hat I have deserved some
gifts this year I would like the huge semi that
I saw in one of the catalogs that we got, a saw
like the guys from Arnzens that worked on
our house had, a toy John Deere tractor with
a snow blower on it, some new jammies that
have feet in them, and maybe a new gator or
something like that so that I can give my sister
Judy a ride. I have my list circled in the catalogs that came in the mail but mom said you
probably wont bring me all of them - she said
it is way too many. I cant help that I like toys. I
have been trying to be very good this year but
mom says sometimes I need to change my attitude! Could you bring everyone else in my

am getting a hang on this Christmas thing.
Sorry I called Elf Pickles Santa when you first
sent him back to our house. I hope it wasnt
because mom or dad called you and asked
you to send him back because I was being
naughty. Mom and dad say that I must be in
my terrible 3s already! I am not sure what that
means but it doesnt sound good. I try to keep
up with my brother and do everything he
does and sometimes I get in trouble a lot during the day. I just need to se everything that
goes on! Easton, my brother, helped me pick
out a lot of toys in the catalogs that came to
our house, but mom says I dont need another
Minnnie Mouse (I only have 5 different ones
that I have to bring to bed all the time). If you
think I havent been too bad could you bring
me some more stuff for my doll and maybe a
desk to sit at and write or color on so I dont
have to drag a chair to the counter and color
or write all over moms papers? A cool chair to
sit on and watch Minnie Mouse since I get excited when I see her or Mickey Mouse would
be great too. Mom and Easton always bake together, and now I need to be in the middle of
it helping too so I bet we can make you some
really yummy cookies and leave the reindeer
carrots too.
