ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
ARIEL SCHWARTZ 03.05.14 9:48 AM
Every year, the Skoll Foundation announces the winners of the Skoll Award for Social
Entrepreneurship, a $1.25 million prize for social entrepreneurs to scale up their impact. This
year's winners aren't huge social impact organizations from years pastthey are all relatively
fresh, but established enough to have gained traction (at least one, Global Witness, has been
around for two decades). They represent a wide variety of social issues, from health to education
to government transparency, and all are worth a glance for their inspiring work. (Ariel

GIRLS NOT BRIDES FOUNDATION/ORGANIZATION
Girls Not Brides is a partnership/foundation of over 300 organizations in 50 countries, all
working to end child marriage within a generation. In 2010, there were 13.5 million girls, who
were married off as child brides. All of which were under the age of 18. Although this is a pretty
ambitious goal, the organization thinks it can meet this standard/goal through education,
economic incentives, laws, grassroots support from men--even though this is more of a feminist
movement, men standing up for female, and child rights, would show that this movement reaches
out to the masses--and local activism. The participating organizations include: Human Rights
Watch, Pathfinder International, and World Vision. Child marriage is fuelled by gender
inequality, poverty, traditions and insecurity.
WHO GIRLS NOT BRIDES MEMBERS ARE Girls Not Brides members are civil society
organisations committed to working together to end child marriage and support married girls.
Our strength is our diversity.Girls Not Brides members work across sectors including health,
education, human rights and humanitarian response and range from small grassroots actors to
large international organisations. Members are based in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the
Americas and Europe. They vary in size, location and the type of work they do some are
programme implementers and service providers working to end child marriage and support child
brides; other organisations focus on research and advocacy, seeking to bring national, regional
and international attention to this problem. (girls not brides team-girlsnotbrides.com)

Letter to the editor:

To the Editor,

How would you feel if your elementary age daughter was forced to marry. Well, in some parts of
the world this actually happens. Young girls are being deprived of their childhood to become
wives and mothers. The project, Girls not Brides, is an organization that is moving to stop child
marriage within a generation. They have partnered with over three hundred companies in fifty
countries in support. Members are based in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and
Europe. With your ,and others worldwide, support this program can reach its mission goal
sooner and child marriage will be stomped out. There website is girlsnotbrides.org .
Elementary Involvement:
Elementary level children can help the girls in this program by providing friendship. The
children Girls not Brides help are around primary school age. Setting up pen pal style
communication can connect children and teenagers from around the world. This system can be
both supportive and educational. I can teach children about different parts of the world and how
they can make a difference piece by piece. This could also open their minds to problem solving
and creative brainstorming. Children can get there friends and relatives interested in helping.
This can lead to children starting their own service programs or projects and/or becoming
interested in other issues in their community.
