This week the children celebrated each


others diversity by engaging in small group
activities from around the world.
Small Group
Activities

1. Pizza Fractions: This group session began with a


reading from Pizza Pizzzza by. A short discussion
on the Italian origin of pizza followed. Afterward,
the children were encouraged to cut out a pretraced pizza circle followed by eight tringle pizza
slices. Next, they were given 10 coins and asked
to buy pizza toppings. The children practiced their
adding and subtracting skills as they eagerly filled
their pizza tops. When each pizza was complete
the children practiced fractions by pretending to
eat their pizza little by little.

2. Pizza: This group session began with a reading of


Sams Pizza by David Pelham. Followed by a
review on the origin of pizza and the sign
language for it. Afterward, the children followed a
recipe for mini pizza pies. The children were very
excited to roll out their dough as well as measure
and count their ingredients. Needless to say
everyone came to snack in the afternoon

3. Carpet Area: This group session began with


Question of the Week, Do you know how to
swim? The majority said Yes! During Name
That Child we found out that Holdens favorite
food is MacnCheese, yum! Next, the children
took turns counting and rhyming to the poem
Three Little Bunnies. Afterward, the globe was
explored and focused on China, in honor of our
Chinese students. Following a short discussion on
China, story wands were used to the book
Chelseas Chinese New Year by Lisa Bullard.
Finally, the children were given lucky color red

4. Outdoor treasure Hunt: This group session began


with a reading of Icky Bug Colors by Jerry Pallotta.
Next, the children were taken outside and given a
sheet of paper with various out items to collect
( flowers, rocks, twigs, leaves). Once the children
had the correct number of items they were
challenged to tally the number of items gathered.
Then they were given a blank sheet of paper and
were able to paint with the items they collected.

5. Sombreros and Bingo: This group session began


with a reading from Uncle Nachos Hat by Harriet
Rohmer. Next, the globe was explored and a brief
discussion on Mexicos location and culture
followed. Then, the children got to decorate their
own sombrero and practice their Spanish with a
game of Mexican bingo. During bingo the children
were able to explore the differences between the
English and Spanish words and letters.
