Fall's arrival at HIP

Greetings Lodge Family,
The summer was a great success! We have
closed down for the summer, but the park is
still hosting visitors and events. We have 3
weddings this month and Dave T., our event
coordinator, has been busy ensuring your
nuptials in this beautiful place run smoothly.
To our newlyweds - congratulations! Maybe
your can post and share a few pictures in the
lodge Facebook page for us to admire.
As for the park, we are in repair mode.
Buildings to paint, water & plumbing projects
to get done . Water heaters, and other items
up for repair or replacement, are just a few
things we will attend to in between lodge
events and rentals in the park this fall and
winter season.
Back by demand is our live music & costume
party in the park October 29th. Come
dance the night away while snacking on some
ghoulish treats and boo like beverages. Flyer
is included in this issue.
Have a safe and happy Halloween and Fall!

Gratitude in service,
Maren Collins
Henrik Ibsen Park Board President

THE FIRST HUNDRED AND EIGHT YEARS OF

HENRIK IBSEN LODGE, SONS OF NORWAY
By Norman Ronneberg Jr.

Part Five: Building Henrik Ibsen Park

Lodge members were excited and enthusiastic about their new Park. After much discussion (and far too
many votes), the Park was finally named Henrik Ibsen Park, in honor of the most famous Norwegian playwright of the erawith proponents of Roald Amundsen Park, Dovre Park and Norway Park being in the
minority. By 1925, most members owned or had access to an automobile, probably one of Henry Fords
Model Ts. They often drove the 40 winding, often fogshrouded miles over poor roads to Kings Mountain, where
there were apple orchards for picnics, and redwood groves
where their children could play. Many Saturday nights, members fiddles and accordions were heard playing schottisches,
polkas and hambos for dances on the open-air dance floor.
The Park was 100% built and developed with volunteer labor.
In Norway, this type of communal dugnad arbeid was common and understood to build a sense of community. Willing
hands cleared the land (the men often wearing hats and vests),
measured out lots for cabin sites, built out-houses and removed
poison oak and brambles. Lodge members were invited to lease cabin sites ($50 for a five year lease).
Each lease, then written in Norwegian, restricted cabin ownership to members, prohibited tree cutting and
businesses in the Park, and specified only one building per lot.
Many lodge members were carpenters. Some had even had architectural
training in Norway. With inspiration from picture postcards of hotels in
Sognefjord and Hardanger, they designed a three-story Club House, in the
national romantic sveitserstil, or Swiss chalet style, then popular in
Norway. For more than two years, 26 skilled carpenters spent many unpaid weekends building the structurefueled by copious amounts of free
beer and open-faced sandwiches provided by their wives and girl friends.
The Club House ultimately cost the Lodge $8250 to build.
Dapper Park builders, with familiar names: Oyen, Jacobsen, Sather and Stromsheim (the others?)
