PAULS...

NIGHTMARE
Kenny Dorvil

Project Intent

A dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions,
and sensations that usually occurs involuntarily in our
mind when we sleep. For most, dreams are ways to escape our constant reality. It is the land of possibilities and
variables. When it comes to understanding dreams and
their purpose, many scientific theories, and philosophical analysis have been made and yet their still not fully
unstood. As far as we know, the average person has 3-5
dreams per night up till seven. However, most dreams are
automatically or quickly forgotten. With the development
of psychoanalysis, mostly studied by Freud, dreams have
been seen as a connection to the unconscious mind and
many people have endorsed his theories; Dreams reveal
insight of hiding desires and emotions usually related to
childhood memories or obsessions. And every dreams
regardless of its content or context manifest the release
of sexual tension. Furthermore, dreams range from normal to ordinary to odd and surreal. By definition dreams
are unpredictable, they are frightening, exciting, magical
melancholic adventurous or sexual. All events that occur
in a dream are outside the control of the dreamer ( some

people have asserted to be able to influence their dream to some extent.) except a lucid dream, where the dreamer
is self-aware. Throughout our society,
the concept of dreams took the place
of a symbol of ones mind, inspirations,
aspirations, worries or fears. We then
understand that dreams, one of the most
basic human interaction with its inner
self, have captivated and fascinated many
throughout multiple eras. The theme of
dream and dreams theory have appeared
in many cultures, in any way shape or
form. When we can think of dreams, it
is not possible to think of the surrealism
movement who used it as a medium to
convey their imagery and experiences
into being. In the same fashion, I have
always been captivated by this topic and
thus for my final project I desired to produce and film animation that entail the
differents experience once can perceive
in a dream. The length of the animation
should be about 2 minutes long. The
narrative begins with a character ( Paul)
that seem to be in Dazed and confused
state. Suddenly, his figure is split, and he
then falls into this mystical, surreal, weird

journey. Like the definition of dreams,

he will travel trough different scenarios.
Each scene introduced an element which
then projects the rest of the adventure
often going forward or going backward.
For the entire film, there will be only music to induced a rhythm with the imagery.
No voices over to little text will be used
to allow the movie to be independent
and free to convey as many interpretations the viewer see fit. Along with this
adventure, two figures will continually
challenge each. It serves as the metaphorical representation of the self fighting
against the subconscious. In the end,
none will win since the are the opposite
side of the same coin. The content of the
imagery will reflect all that dream can manifest and more such as childhood ideals,
deception, fear, sexual desires, repressed
emotion, etc. Underneath all these layer
one will be able to observe many critics
or opinions being made on the ambiguity of dreams and perceptions. Artistically, I want to manifest my imagery in
different styles in other to represent the
constantly changeable aspect of what
constitute our dreams.
