Around Hicksville
This is the best I can do for examples of the shirts....the tees are all
nice quality cotton, the hoodies (one pocket) are nice and heavy and soft, the golf shirts have the
graphics embroidered. I will be sending your personal messages in the next few days. I DO NOT DO
Facebook Messenger on my phone. I would go nuts! So please understand I won't be answering you
instantly. If anyone wants to vouch for the quality please feel free. In addition to last year's offerings I
am doing LONG SLEEVES and TANK TOPS in both mens and womens. No thongs...sorry Buzzy
Assante.
Oh and for those who don't know I donate $1 for each garment and match any donation you choose to
make (up to $5). Last year we raised $4500, year before that $3300....I am hopeful we break $5000 this
year....but whatever we raise, know that some fire company, or fireman, or fireman's family will benefit
in the name of Terry Farrell from the folks at "you know you're from Hicksville if".
Walter Relling 1977
I grew up in Hicksville NY long island during a time when everyone treated each other like Family. We
went outside to play
we got dirty; we ate pb&j sandwiches; penny candy; bomb pops; drank egg cremes
We played "RCK", "Kick the Can" "Mother May I", "Red Light, Green Light", "Two-Box",
"Stoop Ball", "Hide and Go Seek" and "Stickball" in the street. We enjoyed playing "jacks", "hopscotch
and "skully". There was no such thing as bottled water. When we could get our hands on a monkey
wrench we opened fire hydrants, played in sprinklers, walked to public pools. We weren't AFRAID OF
ANYTHING. If you fell down you would just get back up. If someone had a fight, that's what it was...a
fight. Kids didn't have guns when I grew up.
The street lights were our reminder to get back on the block so u could hear your parents when they
would whistle or call you to come in for the night. School was mandatory. We watched our mouths
around our elders because we knew If we DISRESPECTED any adult there would be hell to pay. Hold
your finger down to copy and paste. Please re-post with your block if you're proud that you came from a
close knit community and will never forget where you came from! PeaceMaureen Uss Benson

I actually had two blocks, Berry Lane that was just off Spindle Road and Edgewood Drive that was just
off Glenbrook Road. I remember both well and Im proud of the neighbors and friends that graced my
life during the high school years. Happy to be able to maintain some of those relationships that are
almost 60 years old. That makes me a whipper-snapper (that phrase was coined by who???) I am
delighted to celebrate my 74th birthday in December.

Google is honoring the inventor of the ball point pen. Which of you St Iggies and Holy Family schoolers
remember these? It took skill to use these rascals...Walter Relling
Forced to use them in 6th grade. Sucked being a lefty!...Nick DiPalo 1976
When the Parker T-Ball Jotter first came out mom & dad convinced Sister Rose
Dominic to let me use a ballpoint pen. That was in late 50s. Couple years later Bics were sold in the
classrooms. I was taught by Mom how to use a fountain pen from an early age. I had an Easterbrook
with changeable nibs for different effects. Did get ink-stained fingers a few times.
Mike Ryan
I was proud to be on of the LAST kids allowed to use one of those. As I recall (2nd
grade?), you used a pencil until you passed a penmanship test to be allowed to use them.

A note to Debbie from WalterNot sure if it was meant to torture us or teach us patience and
discipline!...
A note to Walter from DebbieI'm not sure what the lesson was either; I just know the nuns
didn't appreciate the holes.
I remember using one in I think the 6th grade and then in jr high. Woodland Ave for 6th grade and then
Hicksville Jr high. I loved using themJoann Carignan
I had a trip down memory lane today as I visited and walked the empty hallways
of my former grammar school St. Ignatius Loyola. So many thoughts flooded my mind as I peeked in
the classrooms of the Old School. The winding staircases were always dark and scary to a child and they
were as equally scary for a 61 year old. I wish I had someone with me today to share those memories
with. The building has changed since I was last there but the memories were like it was yesterday.
Remember those nuns! Remember the tunnel between the 2 schools, remember the lunch rooms,
remember recess, remember the library, remember the furnace room. Remember the memories
Cheryl Gries Brown 1972
I spent a lot time in the school and I was a Cadet in the St Ignatius Girls Drum & Bugle Corps!! Spent
many, many hours practicing in that school & parking lot!! A lot of great memories those years! In 1972
they were renovating the church & I was getting married so they said I had to get married in the school. I
declined & went to St James Apostle. Many, many great memories living in Hicksville!...Carol Ann
Howe
So sad that the school closed after so many years. My father, brothers and sisters
went to school there as well as myself and my brother and sisters. So many memories good and bad. I
can still smell in my memory the hallways when you walked in on the first day back to school.

Animals are creatures of habit and my cat, Dallas, is no exception. Hes a house cat that has only been
outside once, when he tried to escape. He loves to lay on the dining room table at night so he can look
out the window to see the rabbits and stray cats. When the sun starts to come up, he heads to the spare
bedroom where he lies on the bed until the room lights up. Then he heads to one couch that is leather
and he lies there until its really bright and the sun is shining into his face. Then he goes to the back door
and lies on a throw rug until its time to eat. Then he goes to a second couch and lies on a towel that I
placed there for his comfort. Then finally goes and lies in a box I put on the floor with a second towel.
Please write something about your pet who, too, is a creature of habitBuffalo Bob Casale
A note to Anita from Buffalo Bob Casalemy first cat, back in 1966, was Diablo and she
liked to drink from the faucet as welland liked to lounge inside the leg of my softball uniform.
Unfortunately my O'Ryan went over the rainbow bridge two years ago but when he was alive he used to
sit on the window sill & as soon as he saw me get out of the car he would start to meow until I got in the
apartmentJeannie Kaplan Toplin 1969
A note from Bob to JeannieI know when Dallas is pissed because he walks around the house
crying with a deep throaty noise, almost like hes howling!!!
Not to say that things have changed but yesterday I told my next door neighbor (who has lived there for
about 25 years) that I walked and my father rode his scooter to "The Green" (we lived within walking
distance of the West Village Green). The neighbor had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. I
guess that not many know where Allied or Center Shops is located as wellLynne Lombardi
1971
I lived on Berry Lane and frequented the West Village Green for a variety of
reasons. Swam in the pool during the summer. Got my haircut at the barber next to the deli. My barber
was Joe. Every Friday, used to buy cod fish cakes at the deli. Then my first job was at the Sunrise
Supermarket that was the middle store at the time. Became friendly with the cops that had a phone they
used on the outside wall of the deli Car 209. Loved the bakery in the Allied Shopping Center that had
the best strawberry cheesecake. That bakery is now Dunkin Donut. The dollar general store was a 5 &
10 cent store. I was there when I was around 14 near to Christmas and saw some guy shoving clothes
into a duffel bag. I found the manager and told him what was happening. And Center Shops was a place
I had lunch during school and there is or was Wickers. Also rented an apartment in a house across from
Center Shops on Newbridge Road that was owned by Bobby FlanaganBuffalo Bob Casale

When we wanted to end the day at the west village green pool, we did
cannonballs off the high diving board. that guaranteed our leaving. I remember the lifeguard who would
kick us out daily - name was JerryErnie Constantine

Bakery had the Best Ever Jelly Donuts!!...Kathy Semprebene Calandrillo
The corner of Center Shops was a pharmacy that also had a fountain
boothJean Pius Mucchiari 1965
I want to say it was Whalen Drugs but that was on the corner of Broadway and East Marie Street. Then
it was Hicksville Bike & Toy and now its Sign A Rama. Lenny's pizza was a late-comer. Originally I
remember Resnick Brothers (a dry goods store (clothes, etc.), the Jewish book store, Alllied Deli.
Lynne Lombardi 1971
Editor NoteAbout Whalen Drugs, back in 1910, it was Huettners
Allied had Lenny's Pizza and Crown Bake ShopCenter Shops had Bohack where my first job was.
My friend, Marianne Hoerner, worked at the candy store. I cant remember the name of the owner.
Edward Smith 1972
And Allied also had Levco Drugs and Jack's 5 & 10 (Jack was Myra Stein's dad--she
graduated in '66, I think)...and, of course, the Candy Store on the corner with the lunch counter
Marianne Hoerner 1968
Bohack, the 5 and 10 store, Italian Restaurant, Surgical Supplies, a Dentist Dr.

Good stuff!!...Darren ONeill
To Bob CasalePlease pass on to Ed Delaney (Class of 1961) that both Alan Aker, M.D. and John Aker
live in Boca Raton, Florida. Alan is an ophthalmologist. I knew Alan and John Aker; Ed and his brother

Those who grew up on Long Island in the 70s likely remember the Times Square Stores, or as they were
better known, TSS. Although never exactly plentiful, these department stores were memorable for their
discount prices in the pre Wal-Mart era. Today, they exist only in our memories. Above photos show
demolition of the store that was located on Hempstead Turnpike near Newbridge Road. The property
will soon house another Home DepotMichael Hare 1974
Mark Virgilio, HHS Class of '67, has recently released a CD. It is described as "An eclectic collection of
original songs from Rock to Folk to Country to Ragtime, mixing the humorous and serious. Collected
from my personal experiences both real & imaginary." I had played in bands with Mark during our High
School years, and we've kept in touch over the years. I'm glad to see that Mark continued with music,
and after 50 years has something to show for it. The CD can be purchased from CD Baby
(www.cdbaby.com) for anyone who would like to check it out.

Passages
Hi BobI sent you a message on Facebook, but not sure if you saw it. Mariyln Bowles, Buddy's sister,
saw Pat Kocher a couple of weeks ago. She is friends with Pat's sister and Pat Kocher was visiting her
sister for her sister's birthday. HHS newsletter has had Pat as deceased for several
years. Marilyn is supposed to get Pat's email address. I will keep you posted. Hope all is wellBill
Canham 1961
Hope she is placed on the "alive list" once again and can receive the Hicks Newsletter! She was
disappointed to miss the 50th and said she would have come back from Oregon to attend it
Marilyn Bowles-Nejman 1966
PatA thousand apologies for having you listed as deceased. It isn't the first mistake made and I'm
certain it won't be the last. Back in 2011 when the reunion committee headed by Dennis Naso was
looking for people, an appeal was made to all with known email addresses to pass the word about the
reunion to their personal email lists. Obviously you were not on any one's list. Vinnie Luna created an
excel list that I'm going to attach for your perusal. Your name is not on the list.
The Hicksville Newsletter is always on line at our website http://hixnews.com
If you go there and look at the menu at the top of the newsletter, you will notice a menu item called
Archives. Almost every newsletter is available for you to view ...just click on the month and year when
you enter Archives. Also there is an area where Bio Sketches are stored and there are many from our
class. The newsletter section (item 3 in the menu) is the meat of each month.
Not want to slight the other menu items that are equally worthy of viewing...photo gallery...memory

I'm attaching a writeable form that you can use should you want to submit a sketch.
You can go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg_8jDaeEcg to see the 2005

Lastly, we are sorry you missed the reunion in 2011. You can view highlights after I figure out what I did
with the video. I've switched computers twice since 2011 and I have to search for things. You get my
drift??? Glad you are with us. Any questions please address to me. love yahbuffalo bob cas
