6.

Methodology

6.1

General Requirements

6.1.1

All installation, construction, testing work shall be carried out in compliance

with Safety Manual. All cables should be supplied with relevant test certificates
for Inspection purposes.

6.1.2

Installation and testing shall be conducted by the Site Instrument Supervisors

or be coordinated with Vendor's representative.
Verification of inspection, checklists and test shall be witnessed, recorded in
Form EPCMD-2-QM00-FMT-CI-009 and 010 and signed by the Site Instrument
Engineer.

6.1.3

Test equipment shall have valid calibration certificate.

Material Inspection

6.2.1

Prior to removal to site, cable drum shall be inspected for mechanical damage.
If damage is observed, then damage report to be prepared and stores to take
necessary action for replacement.

6.2.2

Damage report for cable found in twisted condition to be prepared and stores
to take necessary action for replacement. Twisted cable shall not be laid.

6.2.3

Should the cable be damaged, it will be reported.

6.3

Pre-Installation Test

6.3.1

Cables shall be tested (Belled) on the cable drums prior to removal to the work
site.

6.3.2

Instrument cables shall be tested as follows, using a 500 Volt Megger:

a.

The continuity of each core shall be checked.

b.

The insulation resistance between cores and between individual cores and
screen or armoring as applicable shall be checked.

c.

The results shall be recorded on Form EPCMD-2-QM00-FMT-CI-009 and

shall be as per specification requirement.

d.

After completion of the tests the ends of the cable shall be sealed to
prevent the ingress of moisture.

6.4

Installation

6.4.1

Prior to laying cables in trenches, the dimensions of the trenches will be

checked against the approved drawings. Particular attention will be paid to the
requirement for bedding of clean sand.
Where cables are laid in troughs or ducts, these shall be inspected to ensure
they are clean and free from foreign debris.
Where cables are laid on trays or racks, these shall be inspected to ensure the
routing is complete and free from any sharp edges.
Cable layers shall be admitted on cable trays as per cable schedule drawing.

6.4.2

Where cable drum schedules are available, the Site Instrument Engineer shall
ensure that the individual cable lengths are taken from the designated drum.

6.4.3

Throughout the cable pulling process the Site Instrument Engineer shall ensure
that undue stress is not applied to the cable. Where a cable winch is used, the
manufacturers permissible pulling tension values will be adhered to.

6.4.4

Where instrument signal cables are run in parallel with power carrying cables,
above or below ground, segregation shall be maintained in accordance with the
specification and drawings. In case of deviation SER approval shall be taken
from engineering.

6.4.5

Where instrument cables cross power carrying cables, they shall be arranged
to do so at right angles. A Separation to be provided as per drawing or
engineering resolution.
Where signal cables pass under roads or under
trenches for electric cables or other services, the signal cables shall be laid in
pipe sleeves of 100 - 150 mm diameter or in a concrete duct.

6.4.6

Where instrument and power carrying non-electrical cables are run in the same
trench, the run shall be inspected to ensure separation is by positive means.

6.4.7

Cables shall be identified at both ends.

6.4.8

Glanding and terminating of cables will be carried out in accordance with

applicable specification.

6.4.9

Fiber optic and coaxial cables shall be installed in accordance with supplier
recommendation, giving attention to termination, jointing, supporting and
clamping. OTDR shall be carry out before and after OFC laying.

6.4.10

Inside control rooms only system cables shall run inside cable trays.
cables shall run directly on the floor.

6.4.11

Cable bending shall be within permissible limits.

6.5

Testing

6.5.1

On completion of laying and where installed in trenches, prior to backfilling,

individual cable lengths will be tested for continuity and insulation resistance.

6.5.2

Instrument cables shall be tested as in 6.3.2 of this specification and the

results recorded on Form EPCMD-2-QM00-FMT-CI-010.

6.5.3

For all activities, relevant Inspection and Test Plan shall be followed and signed
copies shall be maintained.
