Brandeis Pluralism Alliance Grant Application

The Brandeis Pluralism Alliance (BPA) has established a grants program for
student or faculty-initiated projects that address issues of identity, pluralism
and unity. The general goals of the Brandeis Pluralism Alliance are:

To create opportunities for a large cross-section of students to question

identity and community at a deeper level, and to reach a more thoughtful
and enduring understanding of these issues.

To create alliances among different campus groups addressing issues of

pluralism and unity.

To foster networking, communication, and coalition building (e.g., having

two or more clubs or organizations co-sponsor a project).

To provide funds for creative new pluralism and unity programming

involving students and faculty.

Preference will be given to applications from teams of two individuals

representing diverse backgrounds (e.g., an instructor and student, or individuals
from different clubs, races, religions or nationalities).
***
Grant size will depend on the number and quality of applications, but will
usually not exceed $400 and cannot be used for stipends to students, faculty or
staff. Grant activities can include events, publications, seminars, workshops,
performances, art projects, service projects, and retreats that promote ideas
inherent in pluralism and unity at Brandeis. Student grant recipients will be
asked to consult with a BPA Steering Committee liaison about project planning
and implementation after receiving approval of an award. All grant recipients
are required to acknowledge Brandeis Pluralism Alliance grant support in all
publicity.
Please do not use abbreviations for student clubs unless you write out the
entire name at least once.

A-board Funding will be used, as well as fundraising through ticket sales.
The regular marathon is currently happening, and we will not hear the final
funding until February. If we get the A-board funding, the priority will be

official Brandeis outlets. BPA money will likely be used for decorations. The
prices below are still tentative, as the A-board funding is not finalized.
However, weve worked hard in putting a lot of detail into what information

Project Goals

Please write a narrative description of your project and its goal

K-Nite is a cultural show held every spring by the Korean Student Association (KSA),
and it is our biggest event of the year. The event aims to promote Korean culture
through performances. These performances highlight Korean-American and traditional
Korean heritage, which may not be well known in the Brandeis community. Through
this opportunity, KSA has undergone tremendous time and efforts to produce a show
that attracts more than hundreds of students yearly. Many people in the Brandeis
community and beyond have been exposed to Korean culture through Korean Pop (KPop) music. However, this is only a small fraction of Korean culture: K-Nite aims to
promote Korean culture by displaying acts that range from the traditional, such as fan
dances, to modern, such as band performances and dancing routines. We also have a
cappella and a guest Taekwondo performance. This year's theme is Korean Night Life,
Please describe how your project advances the mission of the Brandeis
Pluralism Alliance.
K-Nite is run by BKSA and aims to promote Korean culture. It is open to the entire
Brandeis community: we have undergraduate and graduate students of diverse ethnic
backgrounds that participate, contribute, and attend the event. K-Nite also uses the
perspective of the performing arts, from traditional fan dances to modern band, in
order to provide an opportunity for the Brandeis community to be introduced to aspects
of Korean culture that it would normally not have access to.
Not only do we have students participating in the event and spreading Korean culture,
but we are also inviting guest performers to raise publicity for the event. The traditional
culture of Korea will be portrayed through Fan Dance. Fan Dance is a traditional dance
performed by women in traditional Korean costumes called Hanbok (womens two
piece silk apparel with short jacket and long dress marked by flowery gold embroidery)
and beautifully painted fans. The synchronization of graceful movements of fans to a
peaceful traditional musical piece is one of the highlights of Korean culture. The
modern culture of Korea will feature Modern Dance (Girls, Boys, and Co-Ed), Modern
Band, and something new to BKSA this year: Acapella. Modern Dance and Modern
Band will perform live to well-known Korean Pop music. Moreover, a Taekwondo
demonstration will be taken place for the first time in a couple of years. Taekwondo is a
traditional Korean Martial Art that promotes values such as honesty, courtesy, loyalty,
and cooperation. Each is an essential component in maintaining a good family
structure, and is a big part of the Korean culture. In addition to Korean performing arts,
BKSA will also provide Korean food after the show from a Boston restaurant to expose
the Brandeis community to multiple aspects of Korean culture.
BKSA represents the Korean community and aims to strengthen the voice of KoreanAmericans on campus. We hope that by sharing Korean culture with Brandeis, we can
expose students and faculty to parts of Korean culture they would have otherwise not

How do your projects goals relate specifically to the general goals of the BPA
(that is, how do they involve a large cross-section of the Brandeis Community
in reaching a more thoughtful and enduring understanding of identity and
diversity; create alliances among different campus groups addressing issues
of pluralism and unity; foster networking, communication, and coalition
building)?
What previous experiences have you had that will contribute to the success of
the project? Please try to be specific and elaborate upon the actions or
methods that helped lead to the projects success.
BKSA has had many years of experience in organizing K-Nite. Much of it is due to the
hard work of the dedicated members of the club - former e-board members will
encourage their friends to go to the event to show support, current e-board members
will work tirelessly to advertise the event, and KSA members and volunteers will step
up and help the event run smoothly. However, none of this could be done without the
support of the organizations at Brandeis. F-board gives us a majority of the funds we
need to procure supplies and materials for the event, the ICC and Student Activities
helps us organize and promote our event, BAASA and other clubs inform their
members about the event as ally cultural clubs, Conference and Events gives us the
place and people we need to make sure everything is safe, and, last but not least, we
receive much support from the BPA in the form of logistics, advertising assistance,
additional funds, and just plain friendly advice. While some clubs have faltered in their
execution of cultural shows, K-Nite has consistently seen praise for its advertising,
food, performances, and planning, which is no surprise, as the planning begins from
the summer before the next K-Nite! Weve seen coverage in the school newspapers
and accolades through word-of-mouth, and we hope to continue this successful
tradition throughout the years - but as stated before, all of this can only be done with

Is this a free event? If not, what will the ticket prices be? How can attendees
We are planning to request use of the box office to distribute tickets during the
upcoming Spring Marathon F-board session, and will also sell tickets at the door
during K-Nite. Pre-ordered tickets will be $3, door prices will be $5, and non-Brandeis
attendees will pay $7. We feel that this is a reasonable price because of the high costs
of our event, and will help keep our event quality consistent with the high standards of
previous years. Also, ticketing help us keep a headcount and maintain a safe number
of attendees at our event. It also has the added benefit of making sure that people are
coming to the show for the performance as much as the food, as we plan to also
stamp people's hands (as we did last year) to make sure that no one without a ticket
obtain the tickets?

How would you encourage the Brandeis community to participate in your

project, and/or how would you share or distribute the results of your
seminar/workshop with the widest possible Brandeis audience? Does your
publicity strategy include outreach to a cross-section of the Brandeis campus
community? Does your publicity strategy extend beyond student club
Based on previous years, there has been an average of around 300 people
attending this event. We expect to see a wide range of attendees, ranging
from students to professors. We also expect students from other
universities to attend K-Nite.
As mentioned in the Logistics/implementation section, KSA will spend a
large amount of time and resources to advertising the event. This is to
make sure that this event is accessible to everyone in the Brandeis
community, as per the Brandeis and BPA tradition of pluralism and
inclusivity. We are not only putting up flyers, banners, and postcards in the
mail, but we will also create Youtube teaser videos and Facebook event
pages, as social media is a great medium for sharing events through large
networks. This means that we cannot only cover Brandeis with our paperbased advertising, but also students in the Boston area who may find out
about our event through Facebook. Of course, within our campus, word-ofmouth will also work well, as K-Nite has received consistent positive
feedback every year. In addition to inviting students, we will also send VIP
invitations to Brandeis faculty and staff members, ranging from President
Fred Lawrence to organization leaders who have assisted in the set-up of KNite 2015.
leaders? How will your project team encourage and access faculty
involvement and/or attendance?

If funds are being requested to support an already existing event, how will
new funding improve or augment the event?
Funds from the BPA will improve the overall quality of the event. In
particular, as noted above, BPA funding will help KSA purchase and cater a
large variety of Korean dishes. KSA believes that in order to provide an
accurate presentation of Korean culture, we must serve many kinds of
Korean dishes. The additional funds from BPA will also contribute to
improving the quality of our publicizing materials. We have spent a
significant amount of time and effort coming up with the most cost-effective
allocations for all items. The new funding will allow us to safely stay within
our budget without sacrificing the quality of the event. The funds from BPA
will thus not only allow BKSA to introduce the Korean culture with good food
to Brandeis community, but also aid the club to carry out our show
professionally and without delays. Since CES fees this year alone are huge
(50% more than last years), BPAs funding will enhance the K-Nites quality.
