Title: ANFLOCOR Vertical Farm Facility Complex

1.1 Introduction
Right now, to feed humanity, we use land equivalent to the size of South America to grow and
harvest our food. By 2050 it is predicted that the worlds population will have grown to
9.5billion people, necessitating the cultivation of another 2.1 billion acres of land. Ultimately,
this amount of land needed to feed the growing population is not available. The question then
becomes - Where and how will we get the food we need? (Despommier 80). The current
institution of industrial farming done in Americas breadbasket and elsewhere in the world, as a
major consumer of freshwater and fossil fuels has led to significant & deleterious problems:
deforestation and agricultural runoff, the overabundance of green house gases, and a culture,
especially in America, of unhealthy and unsustainable consumption (Despommier 80).
Suboptimal, and sometimes extreme, nature of geological and meteorological events such as
undesirable temperatures or rainfall amounts, monsoons, flooding, wildfires, and severe droughts
are the most common problem that the Philippine agriculture suffer (Guanlao, 2013). The
protection of crops from weather is increasingly important as global climate change occurs. In an
effort to encourage every Filipino to take part in the Food Sufficiency target of the government,
both legislative houses are introducing a legislation to promote urban farming in the metropolis.
Currently, in the Philippines the food system makes fast, unhealthy food cheap while fresh

produce is less available and more expensive, encouraging poor eating habits. These poor eating
habits lead to health problems such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. And also, one problem
is transportation between production and sale may result to spoilage, delay, infestation, and more
energy and fuel required that causes for a higher price.
In Mindanao, an international non- government organization reported up to 100% crop damage
for rice and corn in parts of Central Mindanao due to drought currently plaguing the region.
Oxfam, an aid agency based in Britain but with an office in the Philippines, reported 70% to
100% damage to crops like rice, corn, coconut ,banana, coffee, and cacao. This follows the
declaration of a state of calamity by the provinces of Maguindanao, North Cotabato, South
Cotabato, Cotabato City, and Zambuanga City due to drought.
At least 19 of Cotabato Citys 37 villages have been placed under state of calamity due to the
drought after the agriculture sector suffered P17 million losses to agricultural crops. More than
300 farmers in 400 hectares farmlands planted to rice and corn have been affected by the drought
in the citys agricultural sites. Due to this state of calamity, aside from farm, families are
suffering from the setbacks. There were reports that in another town, 4 people were admitted to
the local hospital due to food poisoning. Because there are no other edible crops being grown.
They were forced to eat wild yam (Dioscorea Hispida) a poisonous root crop that needs to be
processed well to remove its toxic content. That they had nothing to eat, except for this
poisonous wild yam, is an indication of desperation and the degree of hunger being felt by some
families. This sets the alarm for an immediate action and response (Pelegrina 2014).
Nevertheless, we cannot just let our farmers take the brunt and solve the problem themselves.
There has to be more concerted effort at the local and national levels to move towards a more

climate- resilient model of food and agriculture using ecological farming technologies (Pelegrina
2014).

1.2 Client

in agriculture, container port terminal operation, packaging production, real estate, trucking,
resort development, food production and services, merchandising, financing, and radio operation.
It forged joint ventures with other respected local companies to expand its operations into mall,
hotel and urban residential development.

1.2 Architectural Project

ANFLOCOR Vertical Farm Complex is a proposed vertical farm building facility and
commercial center that will be located in Matina, Davao City, in an urban setting. The project
will be initiated by the Anflo Management and Investment Corporation (ANFLOCOR).
ANFLOCOR Vertical Farm Complex will provide a new social infrastructure that will link
people through the production of food (new jobs & ways of consuming and distributing). At
the buildings base there is a major civic plaza. Within there is a great room where a farmers
market and food distribution occur. Also at the base are shops and retail that continue the
adjacent, existing city agri- products. ANFLOCOR Vertical Farm Complex has a substantial
mixture of public and private functions. Where farming is not occurring, there are public uses
such as reading rooms and lounges. These spaces continue all the way up to a wetlands
display, where at the end there is an observation deck for the general public. ANFLOCOR
Vertical Farm Complex also focuses on how one efficiently grows crops in a conditioned
atmosphere, while minimizing energy consumption. Where the farming occurs there is a
major southern orientation, allowing for sunlight to drive much of the growth. Plants are
located in plan according to how much sun exposure they need. ANFLOCOR Vertical Farm

Complex will not only address farming problems and food security but will also be a
landmark for Davao Region. In architectural sense, the design will be sustainable and green,
not only to support budgeting but also for maintenance and aesthetics. Green Architecture
will also help end- users develop into well- focused individuals as a consequence of the aura
of the structure.
