5. SOUNDBITE; (SOMALI) Fatuma Abdi, Adaado town
resident,
We are happy with the two seats we got in the elections for
Upper House representatives, and it represented our quota.
However two women competed for two seats but they had to
compete with men for those seats, that was a big challenge but
they managed and we are happy.

7. SOUNDBITE; (SOMALI) Ms Saadia Mohamed,
candidate of Somalia Lower House
We are working on how we can get our fair share of 30 percent in
the Lower House; we had managed to get that done in the Upper
House. We (women candidates) are now pushing for a way we can
compete amongst ourselves and not with men in the Lower House
elections to get our quota.
8. SOUNDBITE; (SOMALI) Dahir Salad, Adaado town
resident,
I think the election of the upper house members were done in a
fair and respectful manner. It shows we are going forward. We
hope the election of the lower house to be even better. Adaado is
a peaceful town and we hope that the peace will remain forever.

STORY: Adaado residents enthusiastic about ongoing electoral process

Adaado, 27 October 2016 - Residents of Somalias Galmudug State have
saluted the electoral process for representatives of the Upper House of the
Federal Parliament, saying its results were a nod to womens representation.
Expressing their views on the process, a cross section of Galmudug residents
spoke out about representation of women and youth and their expectations for
voting for the Lower House of parliament, which is expected to commence.
The Interim Galmudug Administration elected eight senators to the Upper
House of the Federal Parliament, two of them women. As the electoral
process for the Lower House continues, residents said they were optimistic
that the process would be fair.
Fatuma Abdi, said she was impressed that women triumphed after fighting it
out with men.
We are happy with the two seats we got in the Upper House, it is fair, and it
represents our quota. Women had to compete with men for those seats, that
means it was a big challenge but they managed and we are happy, she
stated.
Sadiyo Mohamed, a candidate for the Lower House hopes that women will be
able to build on the gains made in the Upper House, to swell the number of
women representation in the lower house.
We are working on how we can get our fair share of 30 percent in the Lower
house, we had managed to get that done in the Upper House. We (women
candidates) are pushing for a way we can compete amongst ourselves and
not with men to get our quota, Mohamed observed.
Tahir Salad, another Adaado resident said; I think the election of the Upper
House members was done in a fair and respectful manner. It shows we are
going forward. We hope the election of the Lower House will be even better
InshaAllah (god willing). Adaado is a peaceful town.

Similar sentiments were expressed in Garowe. Last week, 11 senators were

voted in as Puntlands representatives to the Upper House of the Federal
Parliament. Halima Abdikadir Barre, a businesswoman, said she was pleased
with the outcome, particularly the performance of women.
I was impressed with how women took part in the election of the Upper
House. It was unbelievable how women competed against powerful men and
even beat them. I want to encourage our women to do the same in the Lower
House election as well; they can get even more than their 30 percent quota,
Halima, the businesswoman, observed.
Said Mohamud Aden, a politician, praised the exercise, describing it as
historic and said he hoped a positive outcome would help in healing the
country.
This was a historic election. It was the first time the Upper house of the
federal government of Somalia was being elected. This is progress and I think
this is a good thing that we have achieved, Aden said.
