Haris Epaminonda - Chapters 1- XXX (30 Posters)

Humboldt Books 2016 ISBN 9788890841859 Acqn 23780
Bx 23x31cm 64pp 30col ills 44.50
Artist's book: a deconstruction of a 16 mm film shot by Haris Epaminonda in Cyprus, embarking
on a new set of associations between image and subject, source and information, meaning and
abstraction.
Chapters focuses primarily on the artist's most elaborate film project to date, filmed in various
locations in Cyprus and presented in four venues: Kunsthaus Zrich, Modern Art Oxford, Point
Centre for Contemporary Art, Nicosia (2013), Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice (2014). In
the film, she questions the nature of classical film-making. Rather than following a linear,
predefined narrative structure, the project unfolded over the months at the various venues in
which the exhibition has been shown.
The book aims to be something like an encyclopaedia, being conscious of the impossibility of
such a task at the same time. It includes all the material that Epaminonda had used for the film,
examining cultural rituals, their presentation, preservation and representation. Objects, costumes,
animals, actors and also reference material that was important for the artist (from Fra Angelico to
Parajanov, Dante to Pasolini, maps and more) are here collected in 26 posters.

In this book, Los Angelesbased painter Jonas Wood (born 1977) explores his longstanding
fascination with intimate interiors, such as his childhood home, his studio and other spaces in his
everyday life. Wood renders these interiors with a disorienting combination of scrupulous
exactitude and absolute flatness.

Betye Saar - Uneasy Dancer

Progetto Prada Arte 2016 ISBN 9788887029673 Acqn 26717
Pb 17x23cm 162pp 190ills 80col 54
Curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, Betye Saar: Uneasy Dancer is the first exhibition of the
American artist in Italy, and brings together over 80 works including installations, assemblages,
collages and sculptures produced between 1966 and 2016.
Uneasy Dancer is an expression Betye Saar has used to define both herself and her artistic
practice. In her own words, my work moves in a creative spiral with the concepts of passage,
crossroads, death and rebirth, along with the underlying elements of race and gender. This
process implies a stream of consciousness that explores the ritualized mysticism present in
recovering personal stories and iconographies from everyday objects and images. Several key
elements lie at the center of her artistic practice: an interest in the metaphysical, the
representation of feminine memory, and African-American identity which, in her work, takes on
takes on evocative and unusual forms. As Saar has said about her work, It was really about
evolution rather than revolution, about evolving the consciousness in another way and seeing
black people as human beings instead of the caricatures or the derogatory images.

An Age of Our Own Making

The Green Box 2016 ISBN 9783941644878 Acqn 26360
Pb 23x31cm 160pp 100col ills 16.95
An Age of Our Own Making is a reader published in relation to the exhibition of the same title in
Denmark edited by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung and Solvej Helweg Ovesen. The exhibition,
which is part of the Danish IMAGES art programme, unfolds in three separate exhibition parts,
Reflections I-III, inviting viewers to reflect on how we want to co-exist in this world, both with the
human and non-human species beyond current tendencies of overprotection and
unsustainable privileges.
The reader features texts by Dipesh Chakrabarty, Vyjayanthi Rao, Henrik Vigh, AbdouMaliq
Simone, Roberto Esposito and Jane Bennett. It takes up the challenge to investigate some of the
characteristics that make up an age defined by humanity and will be subdivided into three main
reflection trajectories: the redefinition of materials in an ecological and postcolonial context; the
concept of over-protection (in contradistinction to migration) inherent to the sovereignty of the
nation state; and finally the entrepreneurial enactment of citizenship.
Participating artists in the exhibition: Reflection I: Ibrahim Mahama, Eko Prawoto, Sammy Baloji,
Ehsan Ul Haq, Angela Melitopoulos & Angela Anderson, Georges Adagbo, Jems Robert Koko
Bi, Julie Djikey, Jean Katambayi Mukendi, Misheck Masamvu, Hamed Ouattara, Reflection II:
Athi-Patra Ruga, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, Ato Malinda, Aman Mojadidi, Mwangi Hutter, Amy Lee
Sanford, Moe Satt, Urnamo, Nathalie Bikoro, Harold Offeh. Reflection III: Moshekwa Langa,

Nigel Hall - Here And Now, There And Then

Annely Juda Fine Art 2016 ISBN 9781904621768 Acqn 26824
Pb 22x25cm 40pp 19ills 18col 15
An exhibition by the British artist Nigel Hall of sculptures and drawings, including a new
installation which furthers Halls explorations into the polarities of internal and external form.
Halls works, principally made of polished wood or steel, are concerned with three dimensional
space, mass and line. His abstract and geometric sculptures give as much prominence to voids
and shadows as to the solidity of material and each work changes with light and viewpoint,
reflecting the landscapes that inspired them. Halls grandfather was a stone mason and
witnessing him cutting into a piece of Bath stone, Hall observed that the process created three
elements: a line, an edge and a shadow. This magical realisation set him on a lifetimes
exploration of spatial and material ambiguity.

The Knaepen Collection

Annely Juda Fine Art 2016 ISBN 9781904621775 Acqn 26825
Pb 22x25cm 64pp 39ills 37col 18.50
Jos Knaepens collection was created in her own image, with each and every work chosen with
care and pleasure. Yet, it was without doubt different facets of Jos Knaepen that had to survive,
namely those of elegance, intelligence and goodwill.
Dominique Allard, Director King Baudouin Foundation
Jos Knaepen (1933 - 2014) was a former art critic and avid art collector. Passionate in her
pursuit of art, she built up strong friendships with artists and dealers alike. She often spent time
with artists in their studios and was a frequent visitor to current museum exhibitions and art fairs.
She had a particular interest in the artists who led the way to abstract art in the twentieth century
and acquired some 56 works in her lifetime. Scholarly in approach, Knaepen was knowledgeable
yet searched for the visceral response that certain artworks evoked in her, deciding on various
occasions that the piece had chosen her rather than the opposite. To discover, to approach, to
appreciate and then to purchase paintings, drawings, engravings and sculptures was the lifes
passion of this exceptional woman, who lived amongst her collection.
Included in the exhibition will be works by Sam Francis, Robert Motherwell, Ben Nicholson, David
Nash and Alan Green, amongst others.

Rodin
Editions Xavier Barral 2016 ISBN 9782365111058 Acqn 26707
Hb 23x31cm 120pp 60ills 30col 37.95
Focusing on the textures, lines and contours that shape the sculptures of Rodin, Emmanuel Berry
immerses us in the creative process of the sculptor.
Following a rigorous protocol: the sculpture is isolated on a black background, illuminated by
natural light, the photographer is examining both the studies and more personal, unfinished works
from Rodin as well as iconic sculptures such as Le Baiser, Balzac, or Le Penseur. Emmanuel
Berry reveals in this way, through these models and casts, Rodin's work in a new light.
Throughout his career, Rodin maintained a special relationship with the photographic medium. He
was probably one of the first artists to understand the importance of photography in order to
better promote his sculptures, thus leaving in his wake a vast array of documentary. Moreover,
his sculptures have inspired a large number of photographers from the Pictorialists through
contemporary artists like Emmanuel Berry.
