Power Quality Improvement in Wind Farm

Connected to Grid Using STATCOM

Abstract In this project wind farm connected to the grid with shunt connected
STATCOM is analyzed. The injection of wind farm to grid will suffer from power
quality issues. The proposed system will give better solution to the power quality
issues. The Bang-Bang controller is used to control scheme for to produce
switching signal to IGBT of STATCOM. In the proposed system the STATCOM is
connected to point of common coupling with energy storage system. The control
scheme of STATCOM connected to grid with wind energy generation system is
simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
Now-a-days the distribution system suffer from many power quality issues
such as voltage sag, voltage swell, voltage spikes, voltage fluctuation, harmonics
etc., STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) is also called as Static
Synchronous Compensator. STATCOM is shunt connected reactive power
compensation; it is used to generate or absorb the reactive power to the
transmission and distribution line. The STATCOM will provide the reactive power
to the line only if the load is suffer from lack of reactive power at given bus
location and vice versa.
