Introduction
PULSE, the Multi-analyzer System Type
3560, is a versatile, task-oriented
analysis system for noise and vibration
analysis. It provides the platform for a
range of PC-based measurement
solutions from Brel & Kjr

A PULSE system consists of a PC, PULSE software, Windows NT, Microsoft Office, multiprocessor DSP board(s), an interface, and data acquisition front-end hardware. A wide range of system configurations are
possible, allowing measurements on up to 32 channels.
PULSE systems with a TAXI interface use either Acquisition Front-end
Type 2825 or Multichannel Data Acquisition Unit Type 2816 and input/
output conditioning modules are fitted to these for pre-processing and
transmitting the transducer signals. An extensive range of input/output
modules exists that can be used to fulfil a wide range of measurement
needs. Alternatively, with PULSE Interface to SONY DAT Type 7706, you
can use a SONY Instrumentation Cassette Recorder as the front-end for
playback and input of recorded signals. The components available for
use in a TAXI-based Type 3560 system solution are shown in Fig. 1.
Table1 provides further information on the input/output modules.
Systems based on other interfaces are described separately.

DSP Boards
The input signals from the front-end
acquisition hardware are transferred to
the DSP boards via the TAXI interface
module which has a maximum
acquisition channel bandwidth of
400 kHz.

Type 3560 uses parallel DSP technology to process the signals and a
system can have from one to four DSP boards. Adding an extra DSP board
increases the real-time analysis channelbandwidth. This means that the
real-time performance is scalable and an extra DSP board can be added
to a system later, if required. For example, if in the future more channels
are added, improved real-time analysis channel bandwidth performance
can be obtained by increasing the number of DSP boards.

ground or floating. It is possible to add a DC offset, but any unwanted
DC offset is automatically removed.

Waveforms
Sine and Dual Sine: Single and dual superimposed sine waves have
high spectral purity. Both sine and dual sine waveforms can be swept.
Dual sine waves can be combined in fixed/swept, swept/swept or fixed/
fixed modes.
Multisine: The Multisine waveform has a low crest factor to extract
maximum RMS levels from a shaker. The line spectrum of the signal can
be matched to the frequency lines of subsequent analysis. In 1/nth
octave analysis mode 44 lines per octave can be selected for multisine.
Random: The signal is produced by a pseudo-random generator with a
very long sequence length. The random signal can be band limited to
match the selected frequency span, and band translated for zooming.
Pseudo-random: The signal has a line spectrum that can be matched
to the frequency lines of subsequent analysis. The waveform has Gaussian amplitude distribution, and signals can be band-limited and bandtranslated for zoom.
Fig. 4 Sequence of pseudo-random
blocks in Periodic Random waveform

Trigger Pulses

A, B & C pseudo-random sequences with

randomly shuffled phase spectra
912052/1e

Periodic Random: The signal is

produced by repeating a pseudorandom block a chosen number
of times. The phase spectrum is
then shuffled, and the new pseudo-random block is repeated, and
so on. A trigger pulse is used to
start the measurement at the
start of the last block of each pattern. Fig. 4 shows the sequence
when three blocks are repeated.

Pulse: Three pulse shapes are available, including a rectangular impulse

which can be as short as 4s, with user-defined width and repetition
interval.
Pink Filter: An analog filter can be applied to any wideband signal to
give it a pink noise roll-off of 3dB/octave above 22.4Hz.
Waveform Repetition: Waveforms can be repeated with a chosen period, for a specified number of times or continuously. Fixed sine and
random signals can be gated to give a burst with chosen width.

12

Control
Trigger: Type 3107 provides a trigger which you can use to trigger data
collection. The timing of the trigger depends on the waveform being
generated; generally it is at the start of a pattern or burst.
Soft start and stop: This function ramps the signal level up when the
generator starts and down when the generator stops. The ramp is
logarithmic, and you can select both the start/stop amplitude level and
the ramp time.
Delay to measurement: To allow a test system to reach a steady-state
condition, you can delay the start of recording for a selected time after
the generator start.

Signal Output Module Type 5955

USES
Output module for output of analog time history data
Monitoring of analog signals during testing
In Acquisition Front-end Type 2825 or Multichannel Data
Acquisition Unit Type 2816 with input modules Type 3015 or 3016

FEATURES
4 channel analog output via BNC sockets
Frequency range of 0.5 kHz to 100 kHz
Dynamic range > 80 dB

Signal Output Module Type 5955 allows

analog time history data to be output
for storage on recorders, and permits
analog signals to be monitored during
testing.

Signal Output Module Type 5955 is a 4-channel analog output module,

for use in Types 2816 and 2825. Its main applications are to allow the
output for storage of time history data on recorders, and to permit
monitoring of analogue signals during test.
Each active output channel requires an active input module (Type 3015
or Type 3016) to provide a conditioned signal. In Type 2825, output is
only possible on 3 channels due to the number of slots available.

Signal Analyzer Interface Module Type 7521

USES
Interfacing Acquisition Front-end Type 2825 or Multichannel Data
Acquisition Unit Type 2816 to the TAXI Interface in a PULSE System

FEATURES
Sets up and transmits data from up to 8 input modules
Provides sampling clock and trigger input
Provides the clock frequency for generator modules

A Signal Analyzer Interface Module

Type 7521 must be installed in all
operational Type 2816 and 2825 units.
Type 7521 controls and routes all
communication between the analyzer
and the input/output modules.

Introduction
A Signal Analyzer Interface Module Type 7521 is required in slot 0 of
any operational Acquisition Front-end Type 2825 or Multichannel Data
Acquisition Unit Type 2816. Type 7521 controls and routes communications between the TAXI interface in the PC and the modules in Type
2825 or 2816, including communication with the remote control unit
which can be connected to a sound intensity module. For serial numbers
lower than 1895423 Prom Update UA 1352 is required for functionality
in a PULSE system.

Sampling Frequency and Trigger

Type 7521 contains sampling clock and trigger input. The threshold
level for external trigger input is factory preset to 1.2 V, but can be
adjusted from 0.1 to 5 V. If using, for example, a 1.5 V battery to provide
triggers, the trigger input must be short-circuited between triggers.

Input Modules
Type 7521 can identify, setup, and transmit data from up to 8 input
modules.

Generator Modules
Type 7521 can identify and set up four Generator Modules Type 3107,
provide them with clock frequency and start them simultaneously.
