ASSIGNMENT: FILM OPENING TASK

Film #1: The Conjuring (2013)

What are the conventions found in these film openings?

o Some conventions used in this film opening were the following:
Photographs
Newspaper Clippings
Audio files
o This opening sequence does not contain any SPECIFIC camera
angle codes, but there is a various amounts of sound codes
which allude to the films overall theme and purpose.
What do the elements in the opening represent? (Denotation and
Connotation)
o The newspaper clippings and the photographs represent the
literal plot of the upcoming story that the viewer will be
introduced too. This is important in that if the audience stops
and analyzes these pieces of paper and photographs, they will
be slowly introduced to the context in which this story is taking
place.
o Figuratively, the sound and mise-en-scene of these opening
components immediately foreshadow the dark and eerie nature
of the film to the audience. This is immediately noticeable with
the dark and eerie non-diegetic sound intertwined throughout
the opening sequence.
How is the credits part integrated with moving images? (Denotation
and Connotation)
o The credits are implemented throughout various photographs
and newspaper clippings that allow for the viewer to more easily
understand the context of this film along with its underlying
dark and eerie tone.
Who is the audience for this film opening? (be specific)

What

o

What
o

The audience for this film would be anyone who enjoys a horror
or thrilling film that enjoys suspense and being startled.
genre is the film in? How is this shown?
The genre of this film is clearly Horror but can also be looked at
as a Thriller in another sense.
The genre of Horror is shown throughout this opening sequence
due to the abundant amounts of non-diegetic sound played
throughout. This, along with the alarmingly dark and eerie miseen-scene elements implemented by the director, allows the
audience to immediately understand the overall genre of the
film they will be watching.
features of the film opening will you use/not use in your own?
One feature that I will use in my own film opening is the use of
non-diegetic sound throughout to aid in the understanding of the
films dark undertone.

Film #2: Se7en (1995)

What are the conventions found in these film openings?

o Some conventions that I immediately noticed throughout this
film opening were:
Extreme Close Ups of fingers and hands along with the
objects being handled.
Low-key lighting used throughout to further elude the
audience to the films underlying tone and purpose.
There are also many instances of both diegetic and nondiegetic sound codes being used to also allude to the
underlying tone of the film.
What do the elements in the opening represent? (Denotation and
Connotation)
o In literal terms, the elements in the films opening show the
hands of a seemingly unknown (presumably) male character in
various fragments and vignettes making diary entries and
cutting clips from books and photographs. This can lead the

Film

audience to believe that it is this man that is the main

protagonist (or antagonist) in the film.
o Figuratively, the actions played out in these opening shots allow
the audience to assume that the actions being done by this
unknown character are obsessive, purposeful, and methodic
key in the development of the films storyline.
How is the credits part integrated with moving images? (Denotation
and Connotation)
o The credits are implemented throughout the opening sequence
in a piercing white font, allowing for them to be immediately
perceived by the audience.
o Similarly, the piercing white font used throughout this opening
sequence can also be seen as an allusion to the viewer to keep
their eyes open for possible sinister activity to come in the near
future.

o The audience for this film can be inferred immediate through the
films opening sequence. Viewers who prefer to watch thrillers,
specifically psychological thrillers, would be this films preferred
audience.

o As previously stated, the genre of this film is a psychological
thriller. This can be easily perceived and inferred through the
directors use of low-key lighting, particular sound codes, and
countless other codes.
What features of the film opening will you use/not use in your own?
o One feature that I will try to incorporate in my own film opening
is the extreme close ups use throughout.
#3: Lord of War (2005)

What are the conventions found in these film openings?

o One of the most prominent conventions found within the
opening of this film is personification. Let me explain.
o This is not everyday personification throughout this opening

sequence; the protagonist the object we are being focused

on is actually a bullet. The bullet is given consciousness and
through this consciousness we are introduced to the storyline of
the film.
What do the elements in the opening represent? (Denotation and
Connotation)
o In literal terms, the elements in the opening represent exactly
what they are, a bullet flying throughout the fictional world.
o In figurative terms, the elements in this opening represent the
life of the bullet, and what the bullet itself represents.
How is the credits part integrated with moving images? (Denotation
and Connotation)
o The credits weaved throughout this opening sequence are in
pure white text allowing them to be seen clearly by the viewer.
This pure white font is not too distracting, which allows the
audience to focus more on the action at hand.
Who is the audience for this film opening? (be specific)
o The audience for this film opening is those who are distinctly
interesting in action and crime thrillers.
What genre is the film in? How is this shown?
o As previously stated, the main genre of this film action and
crime thriller is shown through the directors use of
personification throughout the opening sequence.
What features of the film opening will you use/not use in your own?
o I would love to incorporate personification of some object
throughout the opening of my future film.
