ABU DHABI UNIVERSITY

MEC-465 Introduction to FE Analysis

Group Assignment-1

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Due Date: Wed Sep 21, 2016

Note for all assignment papers:

All papers (group ones but not individual calculation assignments) must be typed with
single space and Times New Roman font. Handwritten (not typed) papers >> will not be
accepted.
Only two students per paper (project type assignment and projects). If you have no
partner, do the assignment individually.
Maximum three groups from each section per paper or assignment, if choice is
applicable.
Deadlines for submitting the paper is very strict (same as any other deadlines). Paper
must be submitted at the end of the day by midnight on the specific due date. The
following deductions will apply:

Papers submitted late (0 24 hours) >> -30%

Papers submitted late (more than 24 hours but less than 48 hours >> -70%

Papers submitted later than above specified >> will not be accepted.

Papers submitted with no proper and typed cover page >> -10%

Papers submitted with wrong names or wrong student numbers >> -10%

Choice and assignment of papers (if applicable) will be done in the class.
Assignments done outside the class but in the same day will have -20%; those
done outside the class in the next day will have -30% and there will be an extra 15% deduction for each additional day. All assignment must be done in person
with the course instructor.

Number of pages (only for project type of assignments/papers; e.g., reviews and research
topics, but not for design or analysis reports) should be between 10-15 pages including
all figures and tables, table of contents, list of figures and references but excluding cover
page and title page. No excuses for smaller or larger sizes. It is a challenge to fit the
information required in specific format and size.
All papers (as applicable) will be run through plagiarism and copyright issue checks.
Figures may be copied from the source as long as the source is cited.
Submit your paper to: mohamed.gadala@adu.ac.ae

and

gadala@mech.ubc.ca

You must use the latest Matlab version available in the lab to do the analysis.
If you use ANSYS for verification, you should use the latest version in the lab. Provide
minimum screen shots to show your steps of solution.

FOR ALL PROJECTS:

It is required to write a Matlab code to perform the analysis required in each of the
following projects. You should submit the script .m file of your code with enough
comments and in a cleaned form so that it may be copied and submitted to Matlab for
checking.
For each project it is required to solve one of the following problems using your Matlab
code. Also, you must solve the problem by hand and provide comparison and discussion
of the Matlab and the hand calculation results.

LIST OF AVAILABLE PROBLEMS:

[1] For the shaft shown in figure-1, find an expression for the torques T1 and T2 and the twist
angle in each segment. Note: Double head arrow indicates a torque, use the right hand rule for
torque direction, and G is the modulus of rigidity for the material.

in millimeters on the figure and the shaft is fixed at one end with torques applied as shown in figure. Find
