Introduction

In this assignment we will cover how the basic four-stroke car engine works from
the moment its injected with fuel and the fumes exit the exhaust pipe. Our main
objectives are to better understand how our main way of transport works and to
improve our English inside out field of work with the proper technical words.
Our research was done my studying the various educational videos provided by our
teacher and our own research on the internet.

How a basic four-stroke engine works

How a car engine Works | 2

The basic four-stroke engine works on very simple concepts to transform chemical
energy to mechanical energy.
A motor car engine is an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE).
In such an engine, the energy is transferred from the pistons moving up and down
at high speeds. This up-down motion is converted to a rotary motion through the
crankshaft and axle. The axle turns the wheels and make the car move forward. A
car engine makes its power by endlessly repeating a series of four steps.
The four strokes of the engine refer to intake, compression, combustion, and
exhaust.
INTAKE STROKE:
The cycle begins when the piston is at the top of the cylinder and is moving
downward. This causes a mixture of petrol and air (or just air in the case of a diesel
engine) to be injected into the cylinder.
COMPRESSION STROKE:
The piston then moves upward and compresses the mixture inside the cylinder.
POWER STROKE:
The power stroke begins the second rotation of the crankshaft. A spark ignites the
mixture of petrol and air inside the cylinder causing a small explosion. In the case
of a diesel engine it is during this phase that diesel is injected into the cylinder. The
pressure created from combustion pushes the piston back down with great force.
EXHAUST STROKE:
During this stroke the exhaust valve opens and the piston pushes the by-products of
combustion out of the cylinder to the exhaust.

Conclusion
How a car engine Works | 3

We can conclude that although it might sound complicated, a car engine works
with simple principles to make to car move. A series of explosions and movements
to generate kinetic energy to make the car move.
