INTRODUCTION
Skoda Auto India Private Limited, more commonly
referred to as Skoda Auto India, established
November 2001,is a fully owned subsidiary of the
Czechautomotive manufacturerSkoda Auto and a
division of Volkswagen Group Sales India.
According to an official release, Skoda Auto India sold
more than 16,000 units in 2008, a 28.5% increase
from 2007 sales totals.
The Octavia was the first car to be launched in
India.Targeted at the Indian premium segment, its

handling, fuel efficiency, and low initial price

(compared to other products then available in the
Indian market) made the Octavia an instant hit with
the Indian car user. Its Turbocharged Direct Injection
(TDI) diesel engined version, in particular, delivered a
high level of fuel efficiency and (for the Indian
market)power and torque, resulting in higher level of
driveability when compared to existing products
available in the Indian market.

FABIA

The Skoda Fabia is a supermini produced by Czech

manufacturer Skoda Auto since 1999. It was the
successor to the Skoda Felicia, which was discontinued in
2001. The Fabia was available in hatchback, estate
(named FabiaCombi) and saloon (named Fabia Sedan)
body styles while from 2007 merging in the second
generation starting with hatchback and awaiting the new
estate version. It is based on the platform of Volkswagen
Polo Mk4.
The second generation Fabia (internal type code 5J) was
officially presented at the Geneva Auto Show in March
2007and was sold from April 2007. It still uses the PQ24
platform. The car is however slightly larger than its
predecessor and takes styling cues from the new
Roomsterleisure activity vehicle. The exterior of the two

cars, Roomster and Fabia, were designed simultaneously

to create synergies by Thomas Ingenlath and Peter
Wouda.
For the launch of the new Fabia, Skoda UK commissioned
an advertising campaign called Cake, featuring the
making of a kodaFabia car out of cake which swapped
rivets for raisins, metal for marzipan and spark plugs for
sugar. The soundtrack for the advert was "My Favorite
Things", from The Sound of Music.
Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive introduced the new
Fabia to the public at the 2008 Guangzhou Motor Show. It
was launched in China for the 2009 model year.
The estate variant was officially announced in August
2007 and was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in
September 2007. Compared with the first generation the
new Combi is 7 mm (0.3 in) longer, 46 mm (1.8 in) higher
and the boot has grown by 54 litres (to 480 litres total).
The engine portfolio is the same as the hatchback
version, without the 1.2 44 kW one.

Skoda India
Skoda India launched the latest version of Fabia in 2007.
The car was well praised by Indian motor magazines, but
it couldn't live up to the hype created by the previous
generation Octavia. Fabia has not succeeded in this
market due to dealer problems, steep prices and Skoda
trying to position itself as a luxury marque.

Skoda India has decided to bring in more powerful

engines at better prices and taken strict measures to
improve dealer quality levels and curb excessive service
costs.

Engines
The initial petrol engine lineup was a mixture of newer
engines from Audi and some carry overs from the
outgoing model. The base 1.2 remains the same (44 kW)
while the higher powered version has its power output
upped to 70 PS (51 kW). There was only a single 1.4 litre
16v petrol on this model, producing 85 PS (63 kW). The
range topping petrol engine was the 1.6 16v engine
producing 105 PS (77 kW) .There was also an option to
link this engine to a 6 speed tiptronictransmission
sourced from Aisin.
Diesel engines consisted of the same 70 PS (51 kW) and
80 PS (59 kW) 1.4 TDI units from before. The range
topping diesel was a 1.9 TDI producing 105 PS (77 kW).
As of 2010, the engine line-up was updated along with a
facelift; this was introduced at the 2010 Geneva Motor
Show. 1.2 litreTSi turbocharged petrol engines replaced
the previous 1.4 and 1.6 litre engines, providing
significant improvement to fuel consumption and
corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions. The Aisin
automatic transmission previously used was also replaced
with the 7-speed DSG system (optional on 77 kW (105 PS;
103 hp) 1.2 TSi models), providing a reduction of over
30% in CO2 emissions for the 77 kW (105 PS; 103 hp)
automatic derivative (compared to the previous 1.6 litre).

Diesel engines were updated to the common rail system

and 4-valve technology.
The top-of-the-line VRS model features the same 1.4 litre
engine as the Volkswagen Polo Mk5 GTI, producing 180 PS
(132 kW) and is fitted with a 7-speed DSG transmission as
standard. The VRS had its own version of the Cake
advert, with a darker rock/metal cover of 'My Favorite
Things', emphasizing the advert's "meaner" theming.

RAPID

The Skoda Rapid is a five-door liftback manufactured by

Skoda. It was first shown to the public at the April 2012
Chinese Motor Show in Beijing, appearing very similar to
the 2011 MissionLconcept car. In September it was
officially shown at the Paris Motor Show. Sales started in
Czech republic at 20 October 2012 and are expected to
commence at the end of 2012 in Europe, next year in
China and at the early 2014 in Russian market
The Rapid is sized to sit between Fabia and Octavia
models and shares some elements with the Roomster and
Fabia. The 1.6 diesel version has a drag coefficient of 0.30
Cw.
It's design gives an appearance of a saloon, but it is a
five-door liftback providing a luggage capacity of 550

litres (19 cu ft). It shares main body elements and the

interior design with the new Seat Toledo, both which will
come off the line in the same Skoda factory in
MladaBoleslav.
The Rapid range features two petrol engines and one
diesel with various power outputs, all compliant to Euro 5
standards. All engines are four-cylinder, except the base
1.2 petrol which is a three-cylinder unit

SKODA
LAURA

10.6 s

The koda LAURA is a small family car (C-segment in

Europe) produced by Czech automaker koda Auto since
1996, its name revived from a model originally produced
between 1959 and 1971. The current Octavia is available
in five-door liftback and station wagon models.
The car is based on a VW Group platform shared with the
Volkswagen Jetta. There have been two generations of
the Octavia model to date. A high performance version,
the RS or vRS, which is related to the Volkswagen Jetta
VR6, is available
The second generation was introduced in March 2004,
based on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform also
used by other Volkswagen Group cars, including the Audi
A3 II, VW Golf Mk5, VW Jetta Mk5, SEAT Len II, SEAT
Altea, VW Golf Plus, VW Touran and VW Tiguan.
Responsible for the design were Thomas Ingenlath and

Peter Wouda. Along with a new internal combustion

engine range, also shared with other models of the
Volkswagen Group, body changes included more legroom
for rear seat passengers (a weak point in the original
model) and increased ground clearance at front and rear
to reduce the risk of grounding on steep ramps or facing
kerbs.
In addition to the Czech factories in MladBoleslav and
Vrchlabi, from 2008 the Octavia has also been produced
at a factory in Bratislava, Slovakia, as well as Shanghai
(under the joint venture of Shanghai Volkswagen).
In India, the second-generation Octavia is marketed as
the Laura to distinguish it from the first generation. The
car is marketed in a segment higher, and was sold
alongside the pre-gen Octavia. However the pre-gen
Octavia ended production in India in 2010, and as of 2012
the Laura's price has been reduced and is now competing
in its predecessor's segment.
There are two four-wheel drive versions of the Octavia the 4x4 and the Scout, both featuring a Haldex Traction
four-wheel drive system, based on a computer-controlled
clutch centre coupling. The two models both have higher
ground clearance than the standard Octavia - increased
by 24 millimetres (0.9 in) for the 4x4 and 40 millimetres
(1.6 in) for the Scout. The Scout (announced 2006 [9]) is
only available with the estate body style, and has some
SUV crossover style exterior modifications such as larger
bumpers.
In August 2011, an special koda Octavia vRS hits world
record in American Bonneville and became the fastest car
in world with up to 2-litre engine, when hits 365 km/h.

SKODA YETI

The koda Yeti (Typ e 5l) is a five-door five-seater

compact SUV model built by the Czech car manufacturer
koda Auto. It was introduced at the 2009 Geneva Motor
Show in March, as the division's first entry into the
popular SUV market.
An announcement was made in late 2010 that koda Yeti
will be built in China by Shanghai-VW in 2013.
In most of the EU, the Yeti is available with three different
trim levels: Experience, Ambition and TracK(or Active in
some markets). However in the UK it is available in five
trim levels, E, S, SE, SE Plus and Elegance. In India, it is
available in "Active", "Ambition" (also called "Ambiente")
and "Elegance" trims. Its luggage capacity, aided by the
'VarioFlex' rear seats, ranges from 405 litres (14.3 cu ft),
up to 1,760 litres (62.2 cu ft) when the rear seats are
removed.
It was named Family Car of the Year in 2009 by Top Gear
Magazine. And according to the European Car of the Year
website, the Yeti was placed fourth in the 2010 award.
In June 2011, koda built the 100,000th Yeti.

Safety
The koda Yeti has been awarded a 5-star safety rating by
the Euro NCAP.[7][8] It scored an impressive 92% adult
occupant protection in the frontal and side crash tests,
78% child occupant protection and 46% in the pedestrian

safety tes It also scored 71% in the Safety Assist

equipment, as it comes with standand driver/passenger
seatbelt reminders.[7] It also includes Electronic Stability
Programme (ESP) with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS),
Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
and Electronic Differential Lock (EDS) - which is currently
standard equipment on most variants throughout Europe
and optional on others. Protection against whiplash injury
in the rear-impact (whiplash) test was also good.

Powertrain
The powertrain offerings in the Yeti include a range of
internal combustion engines, all of which are four cylinder
(I4) four-stroketurbocharged and EU5 emissions standard
compliant. petrol engines are all fuel injected and diesel
engines are all common rail (CR) Turbocharged Direct
Injection (TDI) with diesel particulate filter (DPF)

The Skoda Superb is a large family car primarily built by

the Czech car manufacturer Skoda Auto as its flagship
car. The first version produced from 2001 to 2008 is
based on the platform of the Volkswagen Passat and
shares its major mechanicals and powertrain, but are
elongated by 10 centimetres (3.9 in). The second version
is not based on Passat anymore and overcame him on
many professional tests, it is currently the largest and
most luxurious model in Skoda's model range. The
Superb name had originally been used by Skoda for
luxury cars produced between 1934 and 1942.
An all new Skoda Superb (B6, Typ 3T) was unveiled at the
Geneva Motor Show in early March 2008
Based on a stretched version of the latest A5 Octavia
platform, the Volkswagen Group B6 PQ46, this new
Superb is a five-door five-seatliftbacksaloon/sedan, with
an innovative tailgate that can double as a regular
separate saloon boot, and full liftback, known as 'TwinDoor'. Being based on the Octavia A5 platform, this latest
Superb now utilises a transverse engine layout.
Petrol engine options include five Volkswagen Group
sourced units; consisting of an entry-level 92 kilowatts
(125 PS; 123 bhp) 1.4 litreinline-four cylinder (I4) TFSI
(with a turbocharger and Fuel Stratified Injection), a 118
kW (160 PS; 158 bhp) 1.8 litre I4 TFSI, a 147 kW (200 PS;
197 bhp) 2.0 litre I4 TFSI, a flagship 3.6 litre 191 kW (260
PS; 256 bhp) FSI VR6 engine (a detuned version of that
fitted in the Passat R36) complete with 4motionfour-wheel

drive and six-speed Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG). Diesel

engine options will include 2.0 litre I4 Turbocharged Direct
Injection (TDI) with common rail which is rated at 103 kW
(140 PS; 138 bhp), 2.0 litre I4 TDI 125 kW (170 PS; 168
bhp) with common rail, and a 77 kW (105 PS; 103 bhp)
1.9 litre I4 TDI Greenline with reduced fuel consumption.
Trim levels available in the majority of Europe are the
'Comfort', 'Ambition', 'Elegance', 'Greenline', 'Exclusive'
and 'Laurint&Klement' (May 2012) - with Laurint&Klement
being top of the range. In the UK market, the levels
available are 'S', 'SE', 'Elegance', 'Exclusive' and
'Greenline'. Transmissions include five- and six-speed
manual gearboxes, and the popular automatic Direct-Shift
Gearbox (DSG) with either six- or seven-speeds, as an
option on almost all engine/trim combinations. The
wheels are choice of 16", 17" and 18".
A 'Combi' five-door estate version of the Skoda Superb
was presented to the press in June 2009, and debuted at
the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009
The koda Superb 3,6 FSI 4x4 is currently koda's most
luxurious and fastest production car, with a top speed
250 km/h and acceleration of 0100 km/h in 6,5 seconds.
Superb includes Bi-Xenon headlamps with AFS and
headlamp washers, front proximity sensors, park assist
system, tyre pressure monitoring system, navigation
system and large 6.5 colour touch-screen display, TV
broadcast receiver, electrically adjustable seat and
mirrors, rain sensors, sunroof with solar panels that allow
a parked car the circulation of cool air and cooling tray for
drinks, changer for 6 CDs with a slot for an SD or MMC

card, heated seats and ventilated front seats upholstered

in leather, with 633 litres of the luggage space.

TDI (CR) ENGINE OF

SKODA SUPERB

The TDI engine uses direct injection, where a fuel

injector sprays atomised fuel directly into the main

combustion chamber of each cylinder , rather

than the pre-combustion chamber prevalent in older
diesels which used indirect injection. The engine
also uses forced induction by way of a
turbocharger to increase the amount of air which is
able to enter the engine cylinders, and most TDI
engines also feature an intercooler to lower the
temperature (and therefore increase the density) of
the 'charged', or compressed air from the turbo,
thereby increasing the amount of fuel that can be
injected and combusted. These, in combination,
allow for greater engine efficiency, and therefore
greater power output (from a more complete
combustion process compared to indirect injection),
while also decreasing emissions and providing more
torquethan the non-turbo and non-direct injection
petrol engine
Because
these
engines
are
relatively
low
displacement and quite compact they have a low
surface area. The resulting reduced surface area of
the direct injection diesel engine reduces heat losses,
and thereby increases engine efficiency, at the
expense of slightly increased combustion noise. A
direct injection engine is also easier to start when
cold, due to more efficient placing and usage of
glowplugs.

TRANSMISSION
Direct-Shift Gearbox

A direct-shift gearbox (German: Direkt-SchaltGetriebe), commonly abbreviated to DSG,is an

electronically controlled dual-clutchmultiple-shaft
manual gearbox, in a transaxle design without a
conventional clutchpedal and with full automatic, or
semi-manual control

In simple terms, a DSG is two separate manual

gearboxes (and clutches), contained within one
housing, and working as one unit. It was designed by
BorgWarner, and was initially licensed to the
Volkswagen Group, with support by IAV GmbH. By
using two independent clutches, a DSG can achieve
faster shift times, and eliminates the torque
converter of a conventional epicyclic automatic
transmission,

ADVANTAGES

Better fuel economy (up to 15% improvement) than

conventional
planetary
geared
automatic
transmission (due to lower parasitic losses from oil
churning) and for some models with manual
transmissions;
No loss of torque transmission from the engine to the
driving wheels during gear shifts;
Short up-shift time of 8 milliseconds when shifting
to a gear the alternate gear shaft has preselected;
Smooth gear-shift operations;
Consistent shift time of 600 milliseconds, regardless
of throttle or operational mode;

DISADVANTAGES

Achieving maximum acceleration or hill climbing,

while avoiding engine speeds higher than a certain
limit (e.g. 3000 or 4000 RPM), is difficult since it
requires avoiding triggering the kick-down-switch.
Avoiding triggering the kick-down-switch requires a
good feel of the throttle pedal, but use of full throttle
can still be achieved with a little sensitivity as the
kick-down button is only activated beyond the
normal full opening of the accelerator pedal.
Marginally worse overall mechanical efficiency
compared to a conventional manual transmission,
especially on wet-clutch variants (due to electronics
and hydraulic systems);
Expensive specialist transmission fluids/lubricants
with dedicated additives are required, which need
regular changes;
Relatively expensive to manufacture, and therefore
increases new vehicle purchase price;
Relatively lengthy shift time when shifting to a gear
ratio which the transmission ECU did not anticipate
(around 1100 ms, depending on the situation);
Torque handling capability constraints perceive a
limit on after-market engine tuning modifications
(though many tuners and users have now greatly
exceeded the official torque limits; Later variants
have been fitted to more powerful cars, such as the
300 bhp/350Nm VW R36 and the 272 bp/350 Nm
Audi TTS.

Heavier than a comparable Getrag conventional

manual transmission (75 kg (170 lb) vs. 47.5 kg
(105 lb));
Mechatronic units in earlier models are prone to
problems and requires replacement units
