IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON EDUCATION IN MUMBAI

Introduction:

The era of 21st century is often regarded as an era of technology. Technology, today, plays a very
important role in our life. It is seen as a basis of growth of an economy. An economy which is poor in
technology can never grow in todays scenario. This is because technology makes our work much
easier and less time consuming. The impact of technology can be felt in every possible field one such
field is Education.
What is Technology?
Technology is a term that refers to a body of knowledge that is employed to generate tools, create
skills, and choose materials for human use. Technology includes the use of materials, tools,
techniques, and sources of power to make life easier or more pleasant and work more productive.
What is Education?
Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a
group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research.
Type of technology used in education.

1. Smart boards

1.
Smar t bords

2.
Classro oms
pc

3.
Pr ojectors

4.
Television

Smart board is an interactive white board that allows the teacher to project an image from a
laptop

to the front of the room and the teacher can then digitally draw on that image.

2. Classrooms PC
They give them the option of recording their notes for long period of time. Most classes
require student to do a lot of reports and presentations. You want a computer that will get this
job done better than the rest. This allows for students to be more in tune with their learning by
allowing them to have their own personal computer.
3. Projectors
Projectors hook up to the teacher's laptop and projects the screen from the laptop to the white
board in the front of the room by doing this it allows students to see a larger version of what is
on the laptop screen.
4. Television
Televisions can be used to show instructional DVDs or to be able to watch important current
events, such as 9-11 or presidential elections.

POSITIVE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY

Enhanced Teaching and Learning
I.

Technological developments like digital cameras, projectors, mind training software,

computers, PowerPoint presentations, 3D visualization tools; all these have become great

II.

sources for teachers to help students grasp a concept easily.

It has to be understood that visual explanation of concepts makes learning fun and enjoyable
for students. They're able to participate more in the classroom and even teachers get a chance
to make their classes more interactive and interesting.

I.

I.

Globalization
When schools in different parts of the state, students can meet" their counterparts through video

II.

conferencing without leaving the classroom.

Some sites, such as www.glovico.com are used to help students learn foreign languages online by
pairing a group of students with a teacher from another country.
No Geographical Limitations
With the introduction of online degree programs there is hardly any need of being present physically in
the classroom. Even several foreign universities have started online degree courses that student can join.

II.

Distance learning and online education have become very important part of the education system
nowadays.

NEGATIVE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY

Declining Writing Skills
1. Due to the excessive usage of online chatting and shortcuts, the writing skills of todays young
generation have declined quite tremendously.
2. These days, children are relying more and more on digital communication that they have
totally forgot about improving their writing skills.
3. They dont know the spelling of different words, how to use grammar properly or how to do
cursive writing
Increasing Incidents of Cheating
1. Technological developments like graphing calculators, high tech watches, mini cameras and
similar equipment have become great sources to cheat in exams.
2. It is easier for students to write formulas and notes on graphing calculators, with least chances
of being caught.
Lack of Focus
SMS or text messaging has become a favorite pastime of many students. Students are seen
playing with their cell phone, iPhones day and night or driving and very often even between
lectures. Being ever-connected to the online world has resulted in lack of focus and
concentration in academics and to some extent, even in sports and extracurricular activities.

NEWS: Make bags lighter, CBSE tells teachers, parents

HIGHLIGHTS

The Board has suggested that teachers should not penalize students in any way for not bringing
textbooks or workbooks

The guidelines list different measures for schools, teachers and parents to ensure that school bags are
of manageable weight
NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is trying to take the load off
students' backs. In a recent set of guidelines issued to all affiliated schools, the Board has suggested
that teachers should not penalize students in any way for not bringing textbooks or workbooks.
The guidelines list different measures for schools, teachers and parents to ensure that school bags are
of manageable weight.

The Board has said that students of Classes I and II should not be required to carry homework or use
school bags, recommended alternative methods of teaching based on information technology, and
called for random checks of bags to ensure that they are not too heavy.
The circular says safe drinking water should be provided so that students do not need to carry heavy
water bottles. It adds that the teachers and the principal should have the same water, on which regular
quality checks should be carried out.
Issued by K K Choudhury, director, academics and training, CBSE, the circular says, "Heavier school
bags are known to have adverse effects on health of growing children and if such bags are used for a
prolonged period, the impact will be irreversible.
Young children whose spine is at a crucial stage of growth are the most susceptible ones to hazards
such as back pain, muscle pain, shoulder pain, fatigue and in extreme cases the distortion of spinal
cord or shoulders that may most plausibly be attributed to heavy school bags."
Recommending strict adherence to the timetable and sensitizing students to its benefits, the circular
says,
"This may either be done by integrating this knowledge across scholastic or co-scholastic areas or by
sharing it during school assemblies. The theme such as 'adverse effects of heavy school bags' may be
included in various activities and functions conducted in school."
The Board has also asked schools to conduct all tasks related to projects and activities in groups and
during school hours. It said "these should not be prescribed as homework as it leads to getting the
school bag bigger."

Education World shows you how!

The psychological impact of technology from a global perspective : A study

of technological sophistication and technophobia in university students
from twenty-three countries
This study examined technological sophistication and the level of technophibia in 3,392
first year university students in 38 universities from 23 countries. Technological
sophistication was measured by the use of consumer technology (video-cassette
recorders, microwave ovens, automated banking machines, computer/video games),
university computing (classroom computers, word processing, programming languages,
and library computers) and computer ownership. Technophobia was assessed by
instruments measuring anxiety, cognitions and attitudes toward computer technology.
Results indicated that many countries showed a majority of technophobic students
while others showed very few technophobes. Consistent with expectations from prior
research, age and gender were only mildly correlated with technophobia in less than
one-fourth of the countries and computer/technology experience was negatively related
to technophobia in the majority of country samples. Male students had more
computer/technology

experience

than

female

students

in

half

the

samples.

Technological sophistication varied greatly. A Discriminant Function Analysis indicated

that two variables, a composite computer/technology experience measure and a
composite technophobia score, were sufficient to provide maximal discrimination
between the 23 country samples. Differences between country sample placement on
this two-dimensional representation are discussed as a function of public attitudes
toward technology, cultural characteristics, political climate, computer use in the
educational system and general availability of technological innovations.
