The Darker Side of Identity

Identity is a particular definition you acquire yourself into. Your personalization of yourself may
define to specific identity you choose. Identity in social science divided into two groups, personal identity and
social identity. Identity may implemented in both positive and negative accordion. An identity fascism when
overly impressed by a person might cause disruptive when expressed in argumentative manner glorifying one
ethnocentrism. For example different identity in ethnocentrism are causing common misbehaviors in
Malaysians culture. Ethnocentrism arguments is a common occurrence in Malaysia due to diverse ethnicity
within different states. In Malaysia if you live in Negeri Sembilan there will be differences in culture between
you and people from another states. Over complacent into one states might cause a fight if you are bringing
sensitive issue like urging different folks to glorious the royals of your own state or many other issues within
the folks itself.
I had experienced a darker side of implementing identity within ethnocentrism. I was tweeting
something negative about Kelantanese. My tweets was about the Kelantanese always lie and rude. Also my
experienced of a Kelantanese prevaricate when handling bills for a dinner my family were having there. The
Kelantanese exaggerate the bills to almost RM150 when we were having moderate dinner. I tweeted about it
harassing Kelantanese in 2 tweets. Suddenly a friend of mine replied to my tweet asking why I tweeted
harassing the Kelantanese. I didnt realise she is a Kelantanese. After the knowingness I decided to stop my
ethnocentrism attitude against Kelantanese over Selangorian, Im from Selangor. I dont want to hurt my
friends feelings moreover to insult her ethnocentrism. Since then, I repent from disrespectful to any
ethnocentrism in Malaysia.
From Islamic perspective, Islam taught the believers to respect each other and to not dispute on
tolerable issue. Even if we have to dispute, it must be on issue of justice. Islam means bringing harmony within
its believers despite differences in identity whether it is personal identity or social identity. Respect is a major
traits of a devoted believer in Islam. Being a good Muslim requires respect between each other and to hold
brotherhood essence dearly in our consciousness. Al-Quran verse supporting respecting differences and stay
unite is verse 8:46.
.And dispute not one with another, lest you get weak-hearted and your power depart, and be steadfasts.
