Placement policy for students

The Placement Office welcomes all eligible students to take active part in the Placement Process during the year
2013-2014. IIT Bombay assigns considerable importance to the Placement Process and extends full support to ensure
that all students are given the right opportunity to set their best career path.
The Institute Placement Team consists of the Professor-in-Charge (PIC), Assistant Placement Officer (APO), other
staff members at the Placement Office, Placement Managers, Company Coordinators, Web Coordinator, Department
Placement Coordinators and other volunteers.
This team endeavours to see that IITB is consistently ranked among the best in terms of Placement results and
continues to be the most favoured destination for recruiting organisations. This is possible only with the assistance
and co-operation of all students.
In order to maximize the sum of the benefits to all the stakeholders, the Placement Policy for students has evolved over
the years. To realize a win-win situation for IITB and our partner organisations, all students are expected to understand
the Placement Policy and follow it strictly. It may be noted that some policy changes may take place during the year in
the best interest of whole batch.
The placement policy is applicable to all students registered for the 2013-2014 campus placements of IIT Bombay
(including the ones who may deregister) and is to be followed during the entire duration of the placement season.

1. Placement Season:
The placement season started on July 1, 2013 and will continue up to June 30, 2014.

2. Eligibility Criteria for B. Tech, Dual Degree, M. Tech, M. Sc., M. Des. and M.Phil. students:
(a) All full-time students who are expected to complete their degree requirement during the period April 2014-July
2014 are eligible to register.
(b) Sponsored, external and QIP postgraduate students are not eligible.
(c) International students can register only if they already possess Indian work permit or are otherwise eligible to
work in India without any work permit.
(d) Students can register for placements only once.
(e) Students from earlier batches who are specially permitted as per Deferred Placement Policy.

3. Categorisation of Organisations:
The job profiles offered by recruiting organisations are divided into various categories based on the gross
compensation package as follows:

C1 11 LPA
9.5 LPA C2 < 11 LPA
8 LPA C3 < 9.5 LPA
6.5 LPA C4 < 8 LPA
5 LPA C5 < 6.5 LPA
C6 < 5 LPA
(LPA Lakh per Annum in INR)
Factors other than compensation package like job details, past association of recruiting organization, etc. may
sometimes be considered to alter the category.
Decision regarding categorisation of firms is upto the discretion of Placement Office, IIT Bombay and requests
regarding this matter shall not be entertained.
Job profiles offered by organizations that offer salary in other currencies will be categorized by the Placement Office
based on the above factors.
Job profiles offering varying salary may be placed in multiple categories with each category depending on the salary.

4. Rules for signing JAFs (Job Announcement Forms):


(a) A student procuring a job in C1 or C2 or C3 category organisation will not be eligible to sign any new JAF. The
students name will be also removed from all other organisations that he/she has applied for.
(b) A student procuring a job in a C4 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA) will be allowed to
sign extra JAFs only of a C1 or C2 category organization offering remuneration more than Rs. (x+2.5) LPA as per
point 4(g). If the student gets selected in the higher-category organisation, he/she will become ineligible for the
job offered by the lower-category organisation.
(c) A student procuring a job in a C5 category organisation (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA) will be allowed to
sign extra JAFs only of a C1 or C2 or C3 category organization offering remuneration more than Rs. (x+2.5) LPA
as per point 4(g). If the student gets selected in a higher-category organisation, he/she will become ineligible
for the job offered by the lower-category organisation.
(d) A student procuring a job in a C6 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA) will be allowed to
sign extra JAFs of any higher category organization offering remuneration more than Rs. (x+2.5) LPA as per
point 4(g). If the student gets selected in the higher-category organisation, he/she will become ineligible for the
job offered by the lower-category organisation.
(e) Any student who gets 2 jobs during campus placement will not be eligible to sign any more JAFs, and the
students name will be removed from all other JAFs that the student has already signed. The student must
accept the higher category job, and both the organisations will be informed accordingly. This clause is
applicable even for students eligible for signing additional JAFs as per the incentive scheme.
(f)

A student appearing in multiple shortlists in a single interview slot will have to submit his/her priority list
amongst the organisations that have shortlisted him/her. The instructions for providing the option and its
deadline (which will typically be at least one day before the visit of the organisations for interview) will be
communicated by Placement Office. On receiving multiple offers, the student has to accept the offer from the
organisation appearing earlier in his/her priority list.

(g) A student completing the number of incentive points for participation in the institute-level and
department/hostel-level preparatory activities will get an incentive of signing addition JAFs. Of the total
incentive points completed by the student, a minimum of 10 incentive points must be completed through the
institute-level preparatory activity to avail of signing of the extra JAFs.
(i) On completing 25 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs as follows:

2 extra JAFs, in case of being selected in a C5 category organization.
4 extra JAFs, in case of being selected in a C6 category organization.

(ii) On completing 35 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs as follows:

1 extra JAF, in case of being selected in a C4 category organisation, in addition to that specified
above.
2 extra JAFs, in case of being selected in a C5 category organisation, in addition to that specified
above.
4 extra JAFs, in case of being selected in a C6 category organisation, in addition to that specified

(iii) On completing 40 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs as follows:

2 extra JAFs, in case of being selected in a C5 category organisation, in addition

4 extra JAFs, in case of being selected in a C6 category organisation, in addition to that specified

5. Rules for Off-Campus Application:


(a) Students are strictly prohibited from applying to off-campus organisations except as described below.
Students are also strictly prohibited from making any contact with organisations that are likely to visit or have
visited the campus for placement.
(b) Students who register with the Placement Office are strictly forbidden from applying for off- campus recruitment
without permission till 30th June 2014. Any student who wishes to apply directly to any organisation must
contact the Department Placement Coordinator of his/her department, so that the organisation is officially
invited for campus placement. If the organisation is not invited as per the decision of the Placement Office,
or is unable to visit IITB for placement due to their own constraints, off-campus application to that
organisation may be permitted at the discretion of the Placement Office. The decision of the Placement Office
will be binding to the student.
(c) A student may also directly contact the Assistant Placement Officer or the Professor-in- Charge for
permission to apply for apply off-campus placement in case he/she does not wish to disclose the name of the
organisation to the other members of the placement team. The decision of the Professor-in-Charge will be
binding to the student.
(d) Any student who procures an off-campus job is required to report the same to the Placement Office within one
working day. He/she shall be permitted to sign JAFs for other organisations, as per the rules for signing JAFs
given above depending on the gross compensation package of the off-campus offer.
(e) Any student found to have applied to or secured a job through off-campus application without the prior consent
of the Placement Office, or is found to have directly contacted an organisation participating in Campus
Placement will be debarred from taking part in any further placement process. Further the organisations to
which he/she has applied/secured job with will be also informed of the policy violation by the student. The

matter may also be referred to the institute for further disciplinary action.

6. Rules for Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs):


(a) All Pre-Placement Offers by any organisation, extended to any student, have to be immediately reported to the
Placement Office by the student after registration. This also includes offers extended by organisations that are
not participating or are not likely to participate in the 2013-14 campus placements.
(b) All organisations contacted will be also informed about the PPO policy of the institute.
(c) Any form of intimation from an organisation about the possibility of a PPO being granted in future should be
informed to the Placement Office without waiting for the formal offer letter/email. The Placement Office will
take up the matter with the organisation further and the student will be allowed to sign JAFs as per normal
policy until a decision regarding the grant of a PPO is made by the organisation.
(d) Students should proactively review the terms and conditions for the PPO. In case of any difference between the
companys terms and conditions and the Institute policy, the same should be explicitly brought to the notice of
the Placement Office.
(e) The student will have to accept or reject the offer before the deadline of the organisation or September 30,
2013, whichever is earlier.
(f)

In case of a PPO being offered after 30th September, 2013, a time period of 1-week would be given to the student
to intimate his choice to the Placement office. Failing to do so, Placement Office will assume the offer to be
accepted and the below mentioned rules would be applicable.

(g) Students accepting or rejecting a PPO will have to immediately notify the Placement Office of the same with a
copy of their communication to the organisation. If the PPO is accepted, the job will be recorded, and he/she
will be allowed to appear for additional placement opportunities as given below.
On accepting a PPO, the student will be allowed following additional opportunities:
(i)

C1 category PPO job profile Sign 4 more JAFs of organisations (C1 category) that come before or in the
same slot of organisation that is offering the PPO and appear for only 2 personal interviews out of the
four companies for which the student has been shortlisted for. In case the organisation is not visiting the
campus for placement, this shall correspond to Day 1 of organisation visits.

(ii)

C2 category PPO job profile Sign 4 more JAFs of organisations (C1 or C2 category) that come before or
in the same slot of organisation that is offering the PPO and appear for only 2 personal interviews out of
four companies the student has been shortlisted for. In case the organisation is not visiting the campus
for placement, this shall correspond to Day 2 of organisation visits.

(iii)

C3 category PPO job profile Sign 6 more JAFs of organisations (C1 or C2 or C3 category) that come
before or in the same slot of organisation that is offering the PPO and appear for only 3 personal
interviews out of the six companies the student has been shortlisted for. In case the organisation is not
visiting the campus for placement, this shall correspond to Day 3 of organisation visits.

(iv)

C4 category PPO job profile Sign 6 more JAFs of organisations (C1 or C2 or C3 category) that come in the
first seven days of phase 1 of placement season and appear for only 3 personal interviews out of the six
companies the student has been shortlisted for.

(v)

C5 category PPO job profile Sign 8 more JAFs of organisations (C1, C2 or C3 category) that come in the
first seven days of phase 1 of placement season and appear for only 4 personal interviews out of the eight
companies the student has been shortlisted for.

(vi)

C6 category PPO job profile - Sign 8 more JAFs of organisations (C1, C2 or C3 category) that come in the
first seven days of phase 1 of placement season and appear for only 4 personal interviews out of the eight
companies the student has been shortlisted for.

(h) Any student who gets a job during campus placement must accept the job offered through campus placement,
and the student will not be eligible for signing any additional JAFs. The organization offering PPO will also be
informed accordingly.
(i)

A student with additional opportunities available as per 6(g), on completing the number of incentive points for
participation in the preparatory activities, will get an incentive of signing addition JAFs as follows:
(i) On completing 25 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs as follows:

2 extra JAFs, in case of being offered a PPO by a C5 category organization, in addition to that

(ii) On completing 35 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs as follows:

(iii) On completing 40 incentive points, a student will be permitted to sign additional JAFs as follows:

2 extra JAFs, in case of being offered a PPO by a C5 category organization, in addition to that

specified above.

A student who is found to have breached any of these rules or secured a PPO and not informed the
Placement Office of the same within the stipulated time-limit will be debarred from the placement process. If
at the time of breach the student is already placed, the organization in which he/she is placed will be informed
of the violation. The matter may be also referred to the Institute for further disciplinary action.

(k) After accepting a PPO, the student will not be allowed to appear in recruitment processes of other companies,
if the PPO issuing company desires so.

7. Deferred Placement Policy:


(a) Please refer to the Deferred Placement Policy Document, announced separately.

8. Placement Policy for Research Scholars:

9. Participation Incentives:
(a) Placement Office will rganize some compulsory and optional activities at the department and institute level.
Optional activities will have points attached to them. These points will be awarded to a student on the basis of
written attendance taken during the event (except in the case of online tests).
(b) A student will be awarded 2 points for participating in an institute-level activity. The institute-level
activities include but are not limited to preparatory workshops, online tests, lectures and other employability
enhancement initiatives under the purview of the Placement Office.
(c) A student will be awarded 1.5 points for participating in a department/hostel-level off-line activity. These
activities include but are not limited to the employability enhancement initiatives by Department
Placement coordinators like mock Group Discussions (GDs) and mock personal interview.
(d) A student will be awarded 1 point for participating in an online preparatory activity (lasting more than 30
minutes for a normally-prepared student). There are no points awarded to any preparatory activity requiring
less than 30 minutes. These activities included but are not limited to employability enhancement activities
such as Aptitude Tests.
(e) A student will be awarded 1.5 point for attending a buddy talk.
(f)

Any violation (including proxy attendance) will be addressed in the same manner as in PPTs and corresponding
penalty points will be imposed as given in the Graded Penalty Structure.

(g) A student who earns 25 or more points will get the opportunity to sign extra JAFs as mentioned in Section
4(g) and 6(g) from that day onwards.

10. Graded Penalty Structure:


(a) Some unfair/inappropriate activities have been identified as Dark Violations. The penalty points and/or other
disciplinary action (which might range from hours of community service to a semester drop) for Dark Violation
will be decided by the Placement Office on a case-to-case basis depending on the severity of the violation. The
penalty may range from informing recruiting organisations of the violation to suspension from
placement-related activities for certain duration. In case of Dark Violation after placement, the job offer may be
deferred or cancelled. The matter may be also referred to the Institute for further disciplinary action.
(b) Table 1 describes the violations and the corresponding penalty points.

(c) The penalty points of a student get carried forward even after a disciplinary action has been imposed.
The following are the disciplinary actions that the student will have to face:
(i) 10 penalty points: The student will not be eligible for the extra JAFs earned as a part of the preparatory
incentive points.
(ii) 15 penalty points: The next three organisations visiting campus (and for which student has signed the
JAF) will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.
(iii) 20 penalty points: The next five organisations visiting campus (and for which student
has signed the JAF) will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.
(iv) 25 penalty points: The next five organisations visiting campus (and for which student has signed the JAF)
will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.

(v) 30 penalty points: The next ten organisations visiting campus (and for which student has signed the JAF)
will be intimated of the penalty points imposed on the student.
(vi) 35 penalty points: The student will be debarred from the placement process. The matter may be also
referred to the institute for further disciplinary action.
(d) The penalty point will be cumulatively earned, and the imposition of disciplinary action at any stage will not
remove the penalty points from further considerations.
(e) Appeal against penalty can be made in writing to Professor-in-Charge, whose decision will be final and binding. In
the period pending the final decision, the organisations will continue to be informed of the students attitude and
activities resulting to imposition of penalty.
