The Relationship Between Passive

and Active Vocabularies : Effects of
Language Learning Context.
Paribakh, T.S and Laufer, B. (1998)

A review By Jodhi Prihandaru

If you have difficulty in speaking or listening, it may be

because of problems with vocabulary. You may not know enough
vocabulary, or you may be unable to use the vocabulary which you
know effectively. Problems with vocabulary will also affect your
reading speed, and make it difficult for you to express yourself in
writing.
Vocabulary is the central of language Learning because without it
sufficient vocabulary, learner can`t understand other or express
their own ideas , and there are more that they can`t do if they are
Vocab-less.

Well, as a English Student it is a shame, I just know there are

kind of Vocabullary such as Passive and Active. I think lot / all of
my classmate also did the same thing. It is not a lesson just like a
passive and active sentece like in grammar, it is totally a different
thing from that.

In Simple Explanation that I found on internet, that might be

usefull for who that read my review and they didn`t know the
different of passive and active Vocabulary :
PASSIVE ENGLISH VOCABULARY

English words, terms, expressions and idiomatic expressions you only

RECOGNIZE and know what they mean but you cant use them
automatically when writing or speaking

Specific English words whose meaning you can easily GUESS from
the context but you wouldnt be able to use them yourself

ACTIVE ENGLISH VOCABULARY

English words, terms, expressions and idiomatic expressions you can

easily use when writing or speaking without stopping and
FORCING yourself to remember that word or think of whether it is or it
isnt the right word to use

We will know it any further after read this journal. There is so

many opinion from many writer. One of them that take my
attention is from Faerch, Haastrup & Phillipson, (1984) . . . vague
familiarity with the word form (knowing that the item is a word in
the target language) and ending with the ability to use the word
correctly in free production.you may find it on first paragraph of
the Third page. Based on that opinion, it said ability to use the
word correctly in free production, Let`s see what Wilkins (1972)
wrote in his book While without grammar very little can be
conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed
(pp.111-112). Based on wilkins`s , we can use language as free
production when without grammar, but still got the information
that needed if we know the right vocabulary. I Agree So much
with that Point, it is also based on my experience when I used to
be a Guide in Mangsit beach, at that time, I dont even know what

is grammar was. But, even without grammar, with some useful

words and expressions, in the end I can do the communication.

In our dialy case, we might dont know about which kind of

vocabullary that we used ( passive or active ). After read this
journal, we should know the way we develop our active
vocabulary. So we can improve our language skill more easy than
before. Simply being aware of this distinction can make a huge
difference in your learning. If youre not aware that passive and
active vocabulary are very different things, theres a risk that
youll become one of the many people who can read and listen to
a language very well, but can speak or write very little of it.
