Economy Text Set

Anchor Text & Line of Inquiry
Money Madness By: David Adler
Topic: The topic for this text set is economy. This text set it meant for second
grade social studies, math, reading. All three of the subject areas are
involved in this. The idea for this text set came from looking at the different
economy standards that I have to teach in second grade. I tried to think of
meaningful and interactive ways of teaching standards that can sometimes
be not so fun. I also looked at what other subject areas that could be
integrated into this as well. Of course, math was the first that came to mind
but I also thought about some reading informational standards that could be
worked into this as well. Economy is a broad topic that has so many different
aspects involved. The book Money Madness touches on many of those
aspects and that is why it serves as the anchor text for this text set.
CCSS: RI.2.4, RI.2.6, RI.2.7, RI.2.8, RI.2.10, 2.MD.C.8, SS.E10.2.1, SS.E.10.2.2,

Anchor Text annotation and connections: The book Money Madness is 32

page informational picture book that teaches students the importance of
money, how money has changed over time, saving, spending, and much

more. This book is a great anchor text because it encompasses many

different parts of economy, which will allow me to use other books to focus
on different specific parts of my topic. This text fits with the content area and
grade level that I teach because the information that is delivered in this book
can be boring and dry at times. This text gives young students the
information and knowledge about economy in a fun and colorful way that
appeals to the younger grades. I believe that this text will guide inquiries and
connect with my other resources because it offers so much information on
economics. It makes it easier to find other resources and focus on those
specific parts.
Level: Interest Level: Prek-3rd grade, Grade Level: 3.7, Lexile Level: 770, DRA:
24, Guided Reading: M
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this anchor text are the fact that
the book as so much information on my topic. It is a great opening text for an
economy unit because it provides students with knowledge of what is to
come in the unit overall. This text is also very appealing and in kid friendly
terms for the younger students. The only constraint that I see with this text is
that it maybe too much information at once for some of the younger
students. It might be an overload for some.

Resource Title #2: Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday By: Judith
Viorst
Image:

Annotation: This is a 32-page fiction comedy book that touches on money

and economy topics like saving. This is a cute story about Alexander, who
most students will know from other Alexander book. This book talks about
how Alexander had money last week but he uses all his money and does not
have anymore while his brothers still have money because they saved some
of it. This text will relate to the class inquiry because it touches on one of the
many aspects of economy. I would use this text with my students because it
is a fun way to talk about saving money. This book is funny and has a
character that my students already know so it will make it more engaging for
them for those reasons.
Level: Interest Level: 1st-3rd grade, Grade Level: 3.5, Lexile Level: 570, DRA:
24, Guided Reading: M
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of the Alexander book are that the
book contains a familiar character. This will make it more enjoyable and
appealing for those students who have ever read and Alexander book. This
book also talks about the importance of saving in a fun and light way. It will

Kendraya Chester

make learning and understanding about saving more entertaining. One

constraint of this book is that it does not really go into great detail about how
exactly we can save but I think it leaves that open to the teacher.
Anchor & Inquiry Connection: I would use this text because it fits into the
economy topic for this text set. It is also a grade appropriate text that
presents the idea of saving to students. This book opens up a discussion for
figuring out how to save and spend money as well as what to save and spend
money on. For this text I would task my students with creating a piggy bank.
In this piggy bank they would have to put things that they would like to save
for inside and how much they would save for that particular item.

Resource Title #3: Those Shoes By: Maribeth Boelts

Image:

Annotation: This is a 40-page realistic fiction book that features a young boy
named Jeremy. This book dives into the difference between needs and wants
when Jeremy wants a certain pair of shoes but he knows they are not what
he needs and they are not what his grandmother can afford. This connects
with my anchor text and other resources because it is focusing on another
important aspect of economics. This story focusing on needs and wants helps
to connect with the story about saving and spending. It shows how you
spend money on things you need and can save for the things that you want. I
would use this book before I used the book about savings. I think this would
be a great introduction before the savings book because it would start a
discussion about saving and spending on our needs and wants.
Level: Interest Level: K-4th, Grade Level: 3, Lexile Level: 680, DRA: 20, Guided
Reading: L
Benefits and Constraints: This text has many benefits. One benefit is that it
provides a real world connection when it comes to needs and wants. It really
has a situation that a lot of students can relate to the ideas in the book. The
situation maybe similar to something one of them may have experienced

Kendraya Chester

with something in their lives. The constraint with this book is that depending
on the area in which you are teaching it may not be relevant to the students.
Anchor & Inquiry Connection: I would use this text with my students because
it provides a great real world connection. It is a realistic fiction book that
could be true for any of my students lives. This book could also spark a
reaction out of some of my students that have faced a similar issue. For this
reader task I would have my students create their own shoes. On these
shoes they would write the importance of knowing what a need is and how it
is different from a want. I would then ask them to go back and connect this
to our savings activity.

Resource Title #4: The Big Buck Adventure By: Shelley Gill
Image:

Annotation: This is a 32 page realistic fiction book that touches on the topics
of consumers and money in general. This book is about a young girl who has
a dollar. This little girl heads out to the store to buy something with her
money. There are so many things that she can buy but she only has one
dollar so she has to decide what to spend that one dollar on and how to
spend it. I would use this text with my students to discuss how we spend
money as consumers. I would also discuss how we can buy more than one
thing with a dollar and how in some cases change may need to be made.
Level: Interest Level: K-2, Grade Level: 3.2, Lexile Level: 660, DRA 20, Guided
Reading Level: L
Benefits & Constraints: This text provides a real world experience that I am
almost certain all of my students have encountered. They have all had at
least a dollar that they had to spend on something. This book is a great text
to show how they could spend their money as consumers. One constraint
with this book could be the fact that it is only a dollar in this book. In society

Kendraya Chester

Text Set

CIL 607

today it is hard to take exactly one dollar to the store and buy something. I
think to relate it to more of today it might need to be more than one dollar
that the child has to take with them to the store.
Anchor & Inquiry Connection: I would use this text to discuss consumers and
how my students are consumers. This book is also great to incorporate those
math standards in with it. They can discuss how much a dollar is and how
much money they would need to buy certain things or how much change
they would have to get if they bought a specific item. I would task my
students with writing about what they would spend one dollar on. I would
keep it with the theme of just a dollar because that is something that they
would have to really think about. I would also have them think about if they
wanted something that cost more than a dollar how much more money
would they need and what could they do to earn that extra money.

Resource Title #5: The Go-Around Dollar By: Barbara Johnston Adams
Image:

Annotation: This is a 32 page informative fictional picture book. This is a

book that talks about a dollar that gets passed along three children. The
book discusses how money is passed all around from person to person and
place to place. The book then goes on to talk about the symbols on the dollar
and what they stand for and mean. It also discusses how money is made.
This book connects with my anchor text so well. The anchor text hits on
many topics of economy but probably the most interesting parts to my
students is how many is made and how long it is in circulation. This book
continues to discuss those topics.
Level: Interest Level: K-2, Grade Level: 4.9, Lexile Level: 680, DRA Level: 34,
Guided Reading Level: O
Benefits and Constraints: This book is a great book for teaching about how
money is exchanged and how money is created. This book has more benefits
than constraints in my eyes. It is an interesting story that will keep students
attention and has difficult concepts discussed in very kid friendly terms.

Kendraya Chester

CIL 607

Anchor & Inquiry Connection: I would use this text with my students because
I like how there is a story with the three friends in the beginning and then the
kids in book start discussing how the dollar is passed around. I like that it is
told from a childs point of view and not an adults. I think it makes it more
relatable for my students. To go along with text I think I would introduce our
class Market Day assignment. This is where students create something to
sell. They will create their own shop and set their own prices. They can see
how money is exchanged from person to person all day.

Resource Title #6: Prices! Prices! Prices! Why the go Up and Down By: David
Adler
Image:

Annotation: This is a 32 page informational picture book about supply and

demand. This book uses kid friendly language, images, and scenarios to
discuss the idea of supply and demand and how sometimes prices go up and
sometimes they go down. This book connects with my other resources and
my anchor text because it continues to build on those concepts of economy.
This book is also written by the same author that wrote our anchor text. I
would use this to book to discuss the difficult topic of supply and demand
and those difficult vocabulary words that go along with that.
Level: Grade Level: 1-4, Lexile Level: 780
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this text are that it is by the same
author as the anchor text. I think that it being by the same author helps the
students relate to the concepts and the lessons that are being taught. The
constraints with this is that the vocabulary in the book may be difficult for
some to understand. I think the vocabulary may have to be taught before
introducing the book so that students can get the full understanding.

Kendraya Chester

Text Set

CIL 607

Anchor & Inquiry Connection: I would use this book to connect the
consumers text with supply and demand. I would continue with our class
Market Day assignment. This will be a fun addition to the market day
because it will show students that if they sell out of whatever their product is
that there is a high demand for what they are selling and they need more of
their supply.

Resource Title #7: Erandis Braids By: Tomie dePaola

Image:

Annotation: This is a 32 page realistic fiction picture book about a young girl
who is poor and is willing to sell her hair to buy new fishing gear for her
family and a birthday present for herself. This book is probably the only book
that can be a little difficult to connect to my anchor text. It deals with
someone selling something for money but it might be a difficult concept for
my students to grasp. I think this book would work though because it would
raise a lot of questions about others who might not have as much as us in
other countries and what they might have to do to get the things that they
need.
Level: Interest Level: K-2, Grade Level: 4.5, Lexile Level: 500, DRA: 24,
Guided Reading Level: M
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this text are that like some of the
other books it provides real world experiences. I like that the book is based in
another country. It provides the opportunity for students to learn about the
economy in other foreign and international countries. It touches on that
international economy standard. The weakness with this resource is that it

Kendraya Chester

Text Set

CIL 607

might not be as relatable to my students. They dont understand what it

means to be that much in poverty so it may be hard to relate.
Anchor & Inquiry Connection: I would use this text with my students because
it touches on producers and consumers in a very unique way. This story goes
back to something that was mentioned in my anchor text. The anchor text
talks about how in the past and in other countries things are traded for
money or goods. In this story Erandi sells her braids for fishing gear. It
touches on that concept. I would task my students with coming up with
something that they would trade for something else and write how they think
it would feel to trade something so special to them.

Resource Title #8: Goods & Services By: Brain Pop Jr.
Image:

Annotation: This is a 4 minute informational video on goods and services.

This video defines what each is and how goods are traded for services and
how services are traded for goods. This video is connected to my anchor text
and one of my other resources that I used to discuss good and services. I
would use this because it gets away from just reading a book like always. It
allows students to see the information presented in a different way. The
information is presented in a fun interactive way and is a great addition to
the text that is also related to this topic.
Level: K-5th grade
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this Good and Services video are
that it provides students with familiar characters that are presenting the
information. It also allows students to learn information in a fun and
engaging way. It builds on the information given from the other text that was
used on this same topic.
Anchor & Inquiry Connection: This text is a great resource for my students. It
makes this topic easier to understand and is in kid friendly term. This

resource also has great additions to it that will strengthen students

knowledge and build on what they are learning. Below, I have put pictures of
other features to this resource. This resource provides a word wall, a belly up

presented in a different way. The information is presented in a fun interactive
way and is a great addition to the text that is also related to this topic. This
needs and wants video defines what exactly needs and wants are in a better
kid friendly way. I think it opens the students eyes to how many different
needs and wants there are.
Level: K-5th grade
Benefits and Constraints: The benefits of this Needs and Wants video are
that it provides students with familiar characters that are presenting the
information. It also allows students to learn information in a fun and
