TERM EXAM ENSEANZA Y APRENDIZAJE I

STUDENTS NAME:_Gonzalez _Etelvina Raquel_________________

POPULAR METHODOLOGY
1- Classes are taught in the mother tongue, with little active use of the target
language. The structures of the foreign languages are learned by comparing
and contrasting with those of the mother tongue. The teacher assigns a text,
gives a bilingual word list and illustrates the grammatical rules found in the
text.Students memorize all the given information and try to practice them
through translation of sentences and texts
2- It sought to immerse the learner in thesame way as when a first language
is learnt. All teaching is done in the targetlanguage, grammar is taught
inductively, there is a focus on speaking andlistening, and only useful
everyday language is taught. The weakness in this Method is its assumption
that a second language can be learnt in exactlythe same way as a first, when
in fact the conditions under which a secondlanguage is learnt are very
different.

the Identify method and compare them.

The first is the method Grammar-Translation Approach and the
second is Direct Approach .

3- What is the role of students in Grammar Translation Method?

-The students do what teacher says so they can learn what she/he
knows.
-Students are passive.
4- What is the role of the teacher?
-The teacher is the authority of the classroom.
-Teacher talking time is more.(teacher centered)
-Teacher assumes the role of a assessor to see how well students are
performing or how they performed. Feedback and correction are
organized and carried out.
5- Can you recognize this method? If so, give some characteristics.
Exemplify.

Audiolingual Method:
-Based on the principles that language learning is habit
formation, the method fosters dependence on mimicry,
memorization of set phrases and over-learning.
-Structures are sequenced and taught one at a time. Structural
patterns are taught using repetitive drills.
-Little or no grammatical explanations are provides; grammar is
taught inductively.
-Skills are sequenced.
-Vocabulary is strictly limited and learned in context.
-Successful responses are reinforced; great care is taken to
prevent learner errors.

6-

The teacher presents the new vocabulary and explains the form
of the language in a meaningful context. The students practice
this new vocabulary through controlled activities such as
worksheets or question and answer activities. The students use
or produce what they have learned in a communicative activity
such as a role-play, communication game, or question and
answer session. Can you recognize this method? If so, give
some characteristics. Exemplify.
This method is Total Physical Response.
Total Physical Response Method is one that combines
information and skills through the use of the kinesthetic
sensory system. This combination of skills allows the students
to assimilate information and skill at a rapid rate.

7- Classical or operant conditioning? For each of the ten

examples below, decide if the behavior in question was acquired
through operant or classical conditioning. If you decide the
behavior is operant, identify which type of consequence was
responsible for the behavior change (i.e., positive/negative
reinforcement; positive/negative punishment). If you decide the
behavior is classical, identify the US, UR, CS, and CR.
Robert gets a ticket for driving under the influence of alcohol
that results in a $500 fine and suspension of his driving license.
This is a operant conditioning.
Chris is bitten by the neighbor's German Shepherd. Now
whenever she sees a dog in the neighborhood, she becomes
afraid and runs away. She still enjoys petting her own family's
cocker spaniel.
This is a classical conditioning because the afraid when she sees a
dog is automatic.
She becomes afraid and run away are UR- Bitten by neighbors
German Shepherd is US
Martin has a panic attack during a plane ride. Now the mere
thought of an airplane makes him very nervous. Twenty years
pass and Martin is still afraid of airplanes even though he never
took another flight.
This is a classical conditioning because the panic attack is
automatic.

Your car has a red, flashing light that blinks annoyingly if you
start the car without buckling the seat belt. You become less
likely to start the car without buckling the seat belt
This is an operant conditioning becuase the bucking the seat belt is
voluntary. The flashing light is a positive punishment because to start
the car without bucking the seat belt decreases.
You eat a new food and then get sick because of the flu.
However, you develop a dislike for the food and feel nauseated
whenever you smell it.

This is a classical conditioning because the dislike for the food

and feel nauseated is automatic.
The sick is the US-The nausea is the UR- The new food is the CS
The nausea to the new food is the CR

A professor has a policy of exempting students from the final

exam if they maintain perfect attendance during the quarter.
His students attendance increases dramatically.

This is an operant conditioning because the perfect attendance

is a voluntary behavior. The consequence is negative
reinforcement because something is taken away to incresa the
attendance.

8- During this phase, the teacher tries to arouse the students'

interest and emotions. This might be through a game, the use of
a picture, audio recording or video sequence, a dramatic story,
an amusing anecdote, etc. The aim is to arouse the students'
interest, curiosity and attention. What is the method referred
to here? Define this method.
This method is The Silent Way. This method begins by using a
set of colored wooden rods and verbal commands in order to
achieve the following:
1- To avoid the use of vernacular.
2- To create simple linguistic situation that remains under the
complete control of the teacher.

3- To pass on to learner the responsibility or the utterances of

descriptions of the objects shown or the actions performed.
4- To let the teacher concentrate on what the student says and
how they are saying it drawing their attention to the
differences in pronunciation and the flow of the words.
5- To generate a serious games-like situation in which the rules
are implicitly agreed upon by given meaning to the gestures
of the teacher and his mimes.
6- To permit almost from the start a switch from the lone voice
of the teacher using the foreign language to a number of
voices using it.
7- To provide the support of perception and action to the
intellectual guess of what the noices mean.
8- To provide a duration of spontaneous speech upon with the
teacher and the students can work to obtain a similarity of
melody to the one heard.
8- Scrivener said that the PPP procedure was fundamentally disabling
not enabling. Explain.
Presentation, practice and production, a variation on
Auduilingualismis, is the procedure the teacher introduces a situation
which contextualises the language to be taught. The language is then
presented the students now practise the language using accurate
reproduction techniques such as choral repetition (where the students
repeat a word, phase or sentence all together with the teacher
conducting), individual repetition and cue-response drill.
Scrivener think that PPP procedure is inadecuate as a general
proposal concerning approaches to language in the classroom
because only describes one kind of lesson.

9- Read and identify the method you think is the right one.

the focus of the lesson is the task, not the structure

.the teacher explores the topic with the class and may
highlight useful words and phrases, helping students to
understand the assignment instructions

In my opinion this method is the right because teacher focus on the

understanding of the students, teacher and students work in class
together and there, is where the student can dissipate all doubt.

This method is extremely useful in a focus-on-forms lesson,

especially at lower levels, but is irrelevant in skills lesson, where
focus-on form may occur as a result of something students hear
or read.

It is students who should take responsibility for their learning; it

is the teachers job to organise this.
the knower stands outside a circle of students and helps the
students say what they want to say by translating, suggesting
or amending the students utterances
students need to be comfortable and relaxed so that their
affective filter is lowered exist in a child- parent relationship
with the teacher
10-What do you think is the best method? State your reasons.
In my opinion teacher have to choose the techniques and
activities that are apropiate for each particular task, contex and
learner, with a focus in motivation and helping learners
becomeindepemdent and inspired to leran more. Teacher can
use more than one method or to conbine.
