Graphic Organizer for The Yellow Wallpaper (DUP)
Students will read The Unexpected and The Story of an Hour, two short stories written by
Kate Chopin and fill out the Concept wheel with their analysis of the authors style and purpose
in writing the short story. Students may use their mobile devices or the computers in the
classroom to access http://www.katechopin.org/, which contains biographical information on the
author and literary information, such as setting/publication date/themes of her works.
Working individually or in groups of up to three, follow the order of the questions below.
Except for the middle circle, you do not need to write in complete sentences but do make it clear
which portion you are answering. The concept chart is expected to answer the following
questions:
Who/What: Authors name, date of birth-death, what location did she
settle in after marrying (hint: She has three houses here and most of her
works are set here), period of time that she published works
When: What century and era are her works set in?
Where: What type of environment (urban/rural, America, countryside,
isolated, etc.) are her stories set in? Include multiple terms.
Did What: What themes can be found in her works regarding womens
social/economic status and expectations, and the institution of marriage at
the time?
How: What types/forms of literature did she mostly write and is there a
dialect or hint of foreign language in the works? How are the themes
developed in the text? For example, does she use symbolism, vivid
imagery, emotions, and certain aspects of character development?
Why: Why do you think Chopin wrote about these themes? What was she
trying to achieve and say about women and their place in society?
Middle circle: Write two to three sentences about how the specific
elements of the wheel influence the authors works/themes. For example,
would what she says about the institution of marriage or oppression in the
household apply to contemporary society? Then, synthesize at least two
argumentative sentences about what you think The Yellow Wallpaper and
Chopins works resonate and advocate about womens rights.
